Constraining the HI-Halo Mass Relation From Galaxy Clustering
We study the dependence of galaxy clustering on atomic gas mass using a
sample of 16,000 galaxies with redshift in the range of
and HI mass of , drawn from the 70% complete sample
of the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA survey. We construct subsamples of galaxies
with above different thresholds, and make volume-limited
clustering measurements in terms of three statistics: the projected two-point
correlation function, the projected cross-correlation function with respect to
a reference sample selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and the
redshift-space monopole moment. In contrast to previous studies, which found
no/weak HI-mass dependence, we find both the clustering amplitude on scales
above a few Mpc and the bias factors to increase significantly with increasing
HI mass for subsamples with HI mass thresholds above . For HI
mass thresholds below , while the measurements have large
uncertainties caused by the limited survey volume and sample size, the inferred
galaxy bias factors are systematically lower than the minimum halo bias factor
from mass-selected halo samples. The simple halo model, in which galaxy content
is only determined by halo mass, has difficulties in interpreting the
clustering measurements of the HI-selected samples. We extend the simple model
by including the halo formation time as an additional parameter. A model that
puts HI-rich galaxies into halos that formed late can reproduce the clustering
measurements reasonably well. We present the implications of our best-fitting
model on the correlation of HI mass with halo mass and formation time, as well
as the halo occupation distributions and HI mass functions for central and
satellite galaxies. These results are compared with the predictions from
semi-analytic galaxy formation models and hydrodynamic galaxy formation

NMR analysis of the dynamic exchange of the NS2B cofactor between open and closed conformations of the West Nile Virus NS2B-NS3 protease
BACKGROUND The two-component NS2B-NS3 proteases of West Nile and dengue viruses are essential for viral replication and established targets for drug development. In all crystal structures of the proteases to date, the NS2B cofactor is located far from the substrate binding site (open conformation) in the absence of inhibitor and lining the substrate binding site (closed conformation) in the presence of an inhibitor. METHODS In this work, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of isotope and spin-labeled samples of the West Nile virus protease was used to investigate the occurrence of equilibria between open and closed conformations in solution. FINDINGS In solution, the closed form of the West Nile virus protease is the predominant conformation irrespective of the presence or absence of inhibitors. Nonetheless, dissociation of the C-terminal part of the NS2B cofactor from the NS3 protease (open conformation) occurs in both the presence and the absence of inhibitors. Low-molecular-weight inhibitors can shift the conformational exchange equilibria so that over 90% of the West Nile virus protease molecules assume the closed conformation. The West Nile virus protease differs from the dengue virus protease, where the open conformation is the predominant form in the absence of inhibitors. CONCLUSION Partial dissociation of NS2B from NS3 has implications for the way in which the NS3 protease can be positioned with respect to the host cell membrane when NS2B is membrane associated via N- and C-terminal segments present in the polyprotein. In the case of the West Nile virus protease, discovery of low-molecular-weight inhibitors that act by breaking the association of the NS2B cofactor with the NS3 protease is impeded by the natural affinity of the cofactor to the NS3 protease. Finite Temperature Casimir Effect and Dispersion in the Presence of Compactified Extra Dimensions
Finite temperature Casimir theory of the Dirichlet scalar field is developed,
assuming that there is a conventional Casimir setup in physical space with two
infinitely large plates separated by a gap R and in addition an arbitrary
number q of extra compacified dimensions. As a generalization of earlier
theory, we assume in the first part of the paper that there is a scalar
'refractive index' N filling the whole of the physical space region. After
presenting general expressions for free energy and Casimir forces we focus on
the low temperature case, as this is of main physical interest both for force
measurements and also for issues related to entropy and the Nernst theorem.
Thereafter, in the second part we analyze dispersive properties, assuming for
simplicity q=1, by taking into account dispersion associated with the first
Matsubara frequency only. The medium-induced contribution to the free energy,

Finite Temperature Casimir Effect in Randall-Sundrum Models
The finite temperature Casimir effect for a scalar field in the bulk region
of the two Randall-Sundrum models, RSI and RSII, is studied. We calculate the
Casimir energy and the Casimir force for two parallel plates with separation
on the visible brane in the RSI model. High-temperature and low-temperature
cases are covered. Attractiveness versus repulsiveness of the temperature
correction to the force is discussed in the typical special cases of
Dirichlet-Dirichlet, Neumann-Neumann, and Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions
at low temperature. The Abel-Plana summation formula is made use of, as this
turns out to be most convenient. Some comments are made on the related

Exclusive B -> pi e^+ e^- and B -> rho e^+ e^-
We investigate the exclusive B -> pi e^+ e^- and B -> rho e^+ e^- decays in
framework of the general two Higgs doublet model (model III), in which an extra
phase angle in the charged--Higgs fermion coupling, i.e., a new source for CP
violation exists. The CP violation for both decays are calculated and it is
observed that the CP violating asymmetry in model III differs significantly
than the one predicted by the standard model and model II which is a special
case of model III. Furthermore, it is shown that the zero value of forward
backward asymmetry A_{FB} is shifted when compared with the SM value, which can

``Non-factorizable'' terms in hadronic B-meson weak decays
The branching ratios for the hadronic B-meson weak decays B -> J/psi K and B
-> D pi are used to extract the size of the ``non-factorizable'' terms in the
decay amplitudes. It is pointed out that the solutions are not uniquely
determined. In the B -> J/psi K case, a 2-fold ambiguity can be removed by
analyzing the contribution of this decay to B -> K l+ l-. In the B -> D pi
case, a 4-fold ambiguity can only be removed if the ``non-factorizable'' terms

Creation, doubling, and splitting, of vortices in intracavity second harmonic generation
We demonstrate generation and frequency doubling of unit charge vortices in a
linear astigmatic resonator. Topological instability of the double charge
harmonic vortices leads to well separated vortex cores that are shown to
rotate, and become anisotropic, as the resonator is tuned across resonance
Resonant neutrino spin-flavor precession and supernova shock revival
A new mechanism of supernova shock revival is proposed, which involves
resonant spin--flavor precession of neutrinos with a transition magnetic moment
in the magnetic field of the supernova. The mechanism can be operative in
supernovae for transition magnetic moments as small as provided
the neutrino mass squared difference is in the range . It is shown that this mechanism can increase the

Forward-backward Asymmetry and Branching Ratio of B \rar K_1 \ell^+ \ell^- Transition in Supersymmetric Models
The mass eigen states and are mixture of the strange
members of two axial-vector SU(3) octet, and .
Taking into account this mixture, the forward-backward asymmetry and branching
ratio of B \rar K_1(1270,1400) \ell^+ \ell^- transitions are studied in the
framework of different supersymmetric models. It is found that the results have
considerable deviation from the standard model predictions. Any measurement of
these physical observables and their comparison with the results obtained in
this paper can give useful information about the nature of interactions beyond

Initial psychological responses to influenza A, H1N1 ("Swine flu")
Background
The outbreak of the pandemic flu, Influenza A H1N1 (Swine Flu) in early 2009, provided a major challenge to health services around the world. Previous pandemics have led to stockpiling of goods, the victimisation of particular population groups, and the cancellation of travel and the boycotting of particular foods (e.g. pork). We examined initial behavioural and attitudinal responses towards Influenza A, H1N1 ("Swine flu") in the six days following the WHO pandemic alert level 5, and regional differences in these responses.
Methods
328 respondents completed a cross-sectional Internet or paper-based questionnaire study in Malaysia (N = 180) or Europe (N = 148). Measures assessed changes in transport usage, purchase of preparatory goods for a pandemic, perceived risk groups, indicators of anxiety, assessed estimated mortality rates for seasonal flu, effectiveness of seasonal flu vaccination, and changes in pork consumption
Results
26% of the respondents were 'very concerned' about being a flu victim (42% Malaysians, 5% Europeans, p < .001). 36% reported reduced public transport use (48% Malaysia, 22% Europe, p < .001), 39% flight cancellations (56% Malaysia, 17% Europe, p < .001). 8% had purchased preparatory materials (e.g. face masks: 8% Malaysia, 7% Europe), 41% Malaysia (15% Europe) intended to do so (p < .001). 63% of Europeans, 19% of Malaysians had discussed the pandemic with friends (p < .001). Groups seen as at 'high risk' of infection included the immune compromised (mentioned by 87% respondents), pig farmers (70%), elderly (57%), prostitutes/highly sexually active (53%), and the homeless (53%). In data collected only in Europe, 64% greatly underestimated the mortality rates of seasonal flu, 26% believed seasonal flu vaccination gave protection against swine flu. 7% had reduced/stopped eating pork. 3% had purchased anti-viral drugs for use at home, while 32% intended to do so if the pandemic worsened.
Conclusion
Initial responses to Influenza A show large regional differences in anxiety, with Malaysians more anxious and more likely to reduce travel and to buy masks and food. Discussions with family and friends may reinforce existing anxiety levels. Particular groups (homosexuals, prostitutes, the homeless) are perceived as at greater risk, potentially leading to increased prejudice during a pandemic. Europeans underestimated mortality of seasonal flu, and require more information about the protection given by seasonal flu inoculation
