The role of metaphor in shaping the identity and agenda of the United Nations: the imagining of an international community and international threat
This article examines the representation of the United Nations in speeches delivered by its Secretary General. It focuses on the role of metaphor in constructing a common ‘imagining’ of international diplomacy and legitimising an international organisational identity. The SG legitimises the organisation, in part, through the delegitimisation of agents/actions/events constructed as threatening to the international community and to the well-being of mankind. It is a desire to combat the forces of menace or evil which are argued to motivate and determine the organisational agenda. This is predicated upon an international ideology of humanity in which difference is silenced and ‘working towards the common good’ is emphasised. This is exploited to rouse emotions and legitimise institutional power. Polarisation and antithesis are achieved through the employment of metaphors designed to enhance positive and negative evaluations. Efficient computation of matched solutions of the Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij envelope equations for periodic focusing lattices
A new iterative method is developed to numerically calculate the periodic,
matched beam envelope solution of the coupled Kapchinskij-Vladimirskij (KV)
equations describing the transverse evolution of a beam in a periodic, linear
focusing lattice of arbitrary complexity. Implementation of the method is
straightforward. It is highly convergent and can be applied to all usual
parameterizations of the matched envelope solutions. The method is applicable
to all classes of linear focusing lattices without skew couplings, and also
applies to all physically achievable system parameters -- including where the
matched beam envelope is strongly unstable. Example applications are presented
for periodic solenoidal and quadrupole focusing lattices. Convergence

Division of Giardia isolates from humans into two genetically distinct assemblages by electrophoretic analysis of enzyme encoded at 27 loci in comparison with Giardia muris
Giardia that infect humans are known to be heterogeneous but they are assigned currently to a single species, Giardia intestinalis (syn. G. lamblia). The genetic differences that exist within G. intestinalis have not yet been assessed quantitatively and neither have they been compared in magnitude with those that exist between G. intestinalis and species that are morphologically similar (G. duodenalis) or morphologically distinct (e.g. G. muris). In this study, 60 Australian isolates of G. intestinalis were analysed electrophoretically at 27 enzyme loci and compared with G. muris and a feline isolate of G. duodenalis. Isolates of G. intestinalis were distinct genetically from both G. muris (approximately 80% fixed allelic differences) and the feline G. duodenalis isolate (approximately 75% fixed allelic differences). The G. intestinalis isolates were extremely heterogeneous but they fell into 2 major genetic assemblages, separated by fixed allelic differences at approximately 60% of loci examined. The magnitude of the genetic differences between the G. intestinalis assemblages approached the level that distinguished the G. duodenalis isolate from the morphologically distinct G. muris. This raises important questions about the evolutionary relationships of the assemblages with Homo sapiens, the possibility of ancient or contemporary transmission from animal hosts to humans and the biogeographical origins of the two clusters.G. On the possibility of magneto-structural correlations: detailed studies of di-nickel carboxylate complexes
A series of water-bridged dinickel complexes of the general formula [Ni<sub>2</sub>(μ<sub>2</sub>-OH<sub>2</sub>)(μ2-
O<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu)<sub>2</sub>(O<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu)2(L)(L0)] (L = HO<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu, L0 = HO<sub>2</sub>C<sup>t</sup>Bu (1), pyridine (2),
3-methylpyridine (4); L = L0 = pyridine (3), 3-methylpyridine (5)) has been synthesized
and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic properties
have been probed by magnetometry and EPR spectroscopy, and detailed measurements
show that the axial zero-field splitting, D, of the nickel(ii) ions is on the same order as
the isotropic exchange interaction, J, between the nickel sites. The isotropic exchange
interaction can be related to the angle between the nickel centers and the bridging
water molecule, while the magnitude of D can be related to the coordination sphere at
the nickel sites
The study of metaphor as part of Critical Discourse Analysis
This article discusses how the study of metaphoric and more generally, figurative language use contributes to critical discourse analysis (CDA). It shows how cognitive linguists’ recognition of metaphor as a fundamental means of concept- and argument-building can add to CDA's account of meaning constitution in the social context. It then discusses discrepancies between the early model of conceptual metaphor theory and empirical data and argues that discursive-pragmatic factors as well as sociolinguistic variation have to be taken into account in order to make cognitive analyses more empirically and socially relevant. In conclusion, we sketch a modified cognitive approach informed by Relevance Theory within CDA
Eutectic Colony Formation: A Stability Analysis
Experiments have widely shown that a steady-state lamellar eutectic
solidification front is destabilized on a scale much larger than the lamellar
spacing by the rejection of a dilute ternary impurity and forms two-phase cells
commonly referred to as `eutectic colonies'. We extend the stability analysis
of Datye and Langer for a binary eutectic to include the effect of a ternary
impurity. We find that the expressions for the critical onset velocity and
morphological instability wavelength are analogous to those for the classic
Mullins-Sekerka instability of a monophase planar interface, albeit with an
effective surface tension that depends on the geometry of the lamellar
interface and, non-trivially, on interlamellar diffusion. A qualitatively new
aspect of this instability is the occurence of oscillatory modes due to the
interplay between the destabilizing effect of the ternary impurity and the
dynamical feedback of the local change in lamellar spacing on the front motion.
In a transient regime, these modes lead to the formation of large scale
oscillatory microstructures for which there is recent experimental evidence in
a transparent organic system. Moreover, it is shown that the eutectic front
dynamics on a scale larger than the lamellar spacing can be formulated as an
effective monophase interface free boundary problem with a modified
Gibbs-Thomson condition that is coupled to a slow evolution equation for the
lamellar spacing. This formulation provides additional physical insights into
the nature of the instability and a simple means to calculate an approximate
stability spectrum. Finally, we investigate the influence of the ternary
impurity on a short wavelength oscillatory instability that is already present

A hidden crisis: strengthening the evidence base on the sustainability of rural groundwater supplies: results from a pilot study in Uganda
Extending and sustaining access to rural water supplies remains central to improving the health and
livelihoods of poor people, particularly women, in Africa, where 400 million rural inhabitants have no
form of utility provided water, and universal access to water hinges on accelerated development of
groundwater (UN 2013). The ‘future proofing’ of groundwater investments is therefore vital,
especially in the context of global and local trends including demographic shifts, environmental
impacts of human activity and climate change (Taylor et al. 2013).
The emphasis, in recent years, on accelerating access to new infrastructure has obscured a hidden
crisis of failure. More than 30% of sources are non‐functional within a few years of construction
(Rietveld et al. 2009, RWSN 2009, Lockwood et al. 2011) and a greater number are seasonal (for
example 50% in Sierra Leone) (MoEWR 2012). The accumulated costs to governments, donors, and,
above all, rural people, are enormous. The original benefits generated by the new infrastructure –
improved health, nutrition, time savings, education, particularly for the poorest – are lost if
improved services cannot be sustained. The cumulative effect of rural water supply failure in Africa
over the past 20 years has been estimated by the World Bank to represent a lost investment in
excess of $1.2 billion.
Critically, there is limited data or analysis on why sources are non‐functional and therefore little
opportunity to learn from past mistakes.
This report provides a summary of the work undertaken by the UK‐funded UPGro research
programme ('Unlocking the Potential for Groundwater for the Poor') for sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA)
funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), the Economic and Social Research
Council (ESRC) and the Department for International Development (DfID). The Catalyst Grant project
‘A Hidden Crisis’ was aimed at developing a methodology and toolbox to investigate the causes of
failure in groundwater‐based water services in SSA, which could form the foundation for more
substantial and larger‐scale research in the future to develop a statistically significant evidence base
to examine water point functionality and the underlying causes of failure across a range of physical,
social, institutional and governance environments in SSA. To test the toolbox and methodology
developed, a pilot study was conducted in northeast Uganda
Overall, the approach and methods developed in the catalyst project have been shown to make a
significant step towards developing a replicable and robust methodology which can be used to
generate a systematic evidence base for supply failure. The work has gone a significant way to
encapsulating the complexity of the interlinked aspects of the problem, balancing the natural science
and engineering (“technical”) aspects of the research with those concerning the ability of
communities to manage and maintain their water points (the “social” aspects). The multiplicity of
interlinked causes of water point failure was explicitly acknowledged and taken into account through
the use of multi‐disciplinary field and analytical methods within the toolbox and in selection of the
research team. The multi‐disciplinary methods of investigation used were highly practical and
appropriate to the information sought, and based on detailed observational science
A hidden crisis: strengthening the evidence base on the current failure of rural groundwater supplies
New ambitious international goals for universal access to safe drinking water depend critically on the ability of development partners to accelerate and sustain access to groundwater. However, available evidence (albeit fragmented and methodologically unclear) indicates >30% of new groundwater-based supplies are non-functional within a few years of construction. Critically, in the absence of a significant systematic evidence base or analysis on supply failures, there is little opportunity to learn from past mistakes, to ensure more sustainable services can be developed in the future. This work presents a new and robust methodology for investigating the causes of non-functionality, developed by an interdisciplinary team as part of a UK-funded development research project.
