    Ab initio study of shock compressed oxygen

    Quantum molecular dynamic simulations are introduced to study the shock compressed oxygen. The principal Hugoniot points derived from the equation of state agree well with the available experimental data. With the increase of pressure, molecular dissociation is observed. Electron spin polarization determines the electronic structure of the system under low pressure, while it is suppressed around 30 \sim 50 GPa. Particularly, nonmetal-metal transition is taken into account, which also occurs at about 30 \sim 50 GPa. In addition, the optical properties of shock compressed oxygen are also discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    DsD_s Asymmetry in Photoproduction

    By adopting two models of strange and antistrange quark distributions inside nucleon, the light-cone meson-baryon fluctuation model and the effective chiral quark model, we calculate the Ds+DsD_s^+ - D_s^- asymmetry in photoproduction in the framework of heavy-quark recombination mechanism. We find that the effect of asymmetry of strange sea to the DsD_s asymmetry is considerable and depending on the different models. Therefore, we expect that with the further study in electroproduction, e.g. at HERA and CEBAF, the experimental measurements on the Ds+DsD_s^+ - D_s^- asymmetry may impose a strong restriction on the strange-antistrange distribution asymmetry models.Comment: 4 pages, talk presented by I.     Structure-based discovery of fiber-binding compounds that reduce the cytotoxicity of amyloid beta.

    Amyloid protein aggregates are associated with dozens of devastating diseases including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, ALS, and diabetes type 2. While structure-based discovery of compounds has been effective in combating numerous infectious and metabolic diseases, ignorance of amyloid structure has hindered similar approaches to amyloid disease. Here we show that knowledge of the atomic structure of one of the adhesive, steric-zipper segments of the amyloid-beta (Aβ) protein of Alzheimer's disease, when coupled with computational methods, identifies eight diverse but mainly flat compounds and three compound derivatives that reduce Aβ cytotoxicity against mammalian cells by up to 90%. Although these compounds bind to Aβ fibers, they do not reduce fiber formation of Aβ. Structure-activity relationship studies of the fiber-binding compounds and their derivatives suggest that compound binding increases fiber stability and decreases fiber toxicity, perhaps by shifting the equilibrium of Aβ from oligomers to fibers.     Phase Diagram of Ba2_{2}NaOsO6_{6}, a Mott insulator with strong spin orbit interactions

    We report 23^{23}Na nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the Mott insulator with strong spin-orbit interaction Ba2_{2}NaOsO6_{6} as a function of temperature in different magnetic fields ranging from 7 T to 29 T. The measurements, intended to concurrently probe spin and orbital/lattice degrees of freedom, are an extension of our work at lower fields reported in Nat. Commun., v 8, 14407 (2017). We have identified clear quantitative NMR signatures that display the appearance of a canted ferromagnetic phase, which is preceded by local point symmetry breaking. We have compiled the field temperature phase diagram extending up to 29 T.     Development of a special multi-wavelength pyrometer for temperature distribution measurements in rocket engines

    Previously a fast multi-wavelength pyrometer was developed in a collaboration between the Harbin Institute of Technology of China and Rome University of Italy. The main features of the instrument include the use of a dispersing prism and a photodiode array to cover the entire spectral band. Following this experience, a new type of six-target eight-wavelength pyrometer for solid propellant rocket engine plume temperature distribution measurements has been developed. The instrument can record the radiation fluxes of eight wavelengths for six different uniformly distributed points on the target surface, which are well defined by holes on a field stop. The fast pyrometer with a specially designed synchronous data acquisition system can assure that the recorded thermal radiation fluxes of different spectral regions are at the same time and the same true temperature, even with dramatically changed targets

    Quantum Criticality of an Ising-like Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Chain in Transverse Magnetic Field

    We report on magnetization, sound velocity, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements of the Ising-like spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic chain system BaCo2_2V2_2O8_8 as a function of temperature down to 1.3 K and applied transverse magnetic field up to 60 T. While across the N\'{e}el temperature of TN5T_N\sim5 K anomalies in magnetization and sound velocity confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering transition, at the lowest temperature the field-dependent measurements reveal a sharp softening of sound velocity v(B)v(B) and a clear minimum of temperature T(B)T(B) at Bc,3D=21.4B^{c,3D}_\perp=21.4 T, indicating the suppression of the antiferromagnetic order. At higher fields, the T(B)T(B) curve shows a broad minimum at Bc=40B^c_\perp = 40 T, accompanied by a broad minimum in the sound velocity and a saturation-like magnetization. These features signal a quantum phase transition which is further characterized by the divergent behavior of the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter ΓB(BBc)1\Gamma_B \propto (B-B^{c}_\perp)^{-1}. By contrast, around the critical field, the Gr\"{u}neisen parameter converges as temperature decreases, pointing to a quantum critical point of the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising model.Comment: Phys.
