Large-eddy simulation of the flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity
Large-eddy simulations of the turbulent flow in a lid-driven cubical cavity
have been carried out at a Reynolds number of 12000 using spectral element
methods. Two distinct subgrid-scales models, namely a dynamic Smagorinsky model
and a dynamic mixed model, have been both implemented and used to perform
long-lasting simulations required by the relevant time scales of the flow. All
filtering levels make use of explicit filters applied in the physical space (on
an element-by-element approach) and spectral (modal) spaces. The two
subgrid-scales models are validated and compared to available experimental and
numerical reference results, showing very good agreement. Specific features of
lid-driven cavity flow in the turbulent regime, such as inhomogeneity of
turbulence, turbulence production near the downstream corner eddy, small-scales
localization and helical properties are investigated and discussed in the
large-eddy simulation framework. Time histories of quantities such as the total
energy, total turbulent kinetic energy or helicity exhibit different evolutions
but only after a relatively long transient period. However, the average values
remain extremely close
Improving Prolog Programs: Refactoring for Prolog
Refactoring is an established technique from the OO-community to restructure
code: it aims at improving software readability, maintainability and
extensibility. Although refactoring is not tied to the OO-paradigm in
particular, its ideas have not been applied to Logic Programming until now.
This paper applies the ideas of refactoring to Prolog programs. A catalogue
is presented listing refactorings classified according to scope. Some of the
refactorings have been adapted from the OO-paradigm, while others have been
specifically designed for Prolog. Also the discrepancy between intended and
operational semantics in Prolog is addressed by some of the refactorings.
In addition, ViPReSS, a semi-automatic refactoring browser, is discussed and
the experience with applying \vipress to a large Prolog legacy system is
reported. Our main conclusion is that refactoring is not only a viable

When Madagascar produced natural rubber: a brief, forgotten yet informative history.
From 1891 to 1914, Madagascar, like other western African countries, was a production zone for forest rubber destined for export to Europe when Asian plantations where not yet sufficiently developed . Numerous species endemic to the forests of the three major Malagasy ecosystems were exploited, often with a view to maximising short term productivity without any consideration for the sustainable management of the resource. This episode represents one of the first cases of industrial exploitation of Madagascar's biological resources. Although Madagascar occupies a modest position on the world rubber market at that time, the exploitation of rubber bore major consequences for the island's forestry resources and, moreover, influenced the vision and discourse of scientists and politicians concerning their management. It was one of the factors triggering awareness of the value of Madagascar's biodiversity and the threat to which it might be exposed through poorly-controlled human activity. As a result, highly repressive and forcible legislation was introduced aimed at containing the activity practiced by local populations considered to be mostly to blame. But from the early days of French colonial rule, naturalists judged the outcomes of political decisions too weak to offer any guarantee of an effective defence. They responded by adopting an intentionally alarmist and catastrophist discourse with the object of provoking a reaction from the politicians, considered too lax. This discourse, in fact, took an about-turn from 1942-45 when the war effort led to a revitalisation of the Malagasy rubber sector as Asian production was mainly out of reach. A second consequence came in 1927 with the creation of a network of protected areas managed by naturalists, making Madagascar at that time, a pioneer in Africa. There was a simultaneous flurry of activity to promote the domestication of Malagasy rubber species, combined with the introduction of new species with high potential (Hevea brasiliensis, Castilloa elastica). However, with the emergence of far more profitable Asian rubber, all attempts at cultivation in Madagascar were abandoned when exploitation ceased to be profitable, and thus the Malagasy forests were redeemed. This episode demonstrates how it was in fact economic reality, by condemning an unprofitable sector, that was the real vehicle by which the survival of Malagasy rubber species was secured, and not the naturalists' discourse, nor the creation of protected zones, nor the promulgation of repressive legislations. This case study is of more than purely historical interest, in that it still has currency where, for example, the exploitation of Prunus africana is concerned
Freezing-induced self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules
The self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules usually takes place in a liquid
phase, near room temperature. Here, using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS)
experiments performed in real time, we show that freezing of aqueous solutions
of copolymer amphiphilic molecules can induce self-assembly below 0{\deg}C.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
African American men with low-grade prostate cancer have increased disease recurrence after prostatectomy compared with Caucasian men.
PURPOSE: To explore whether disparities in outcomes exist between African American (AA) and Caucasian (CS) men with low-grade prostate cancer and similar cancer of the prostate risk assessment-postsurgery (CAPRA-S) features following prostatectomy (RP).
METHODS: The overall cohort consisted of 1,265 men (234 AA and 1,031 CS) who met the National comprehensive cancer network criteria for low- to intermediate-risk prostate cancer and underwent RP between 1990 and 2012. We first evaluated whether clinical factors were associated with adverse pathologic outcomes and freedom from biochemical failure (FFbF) using the entire cohort. Next, we studied a subset of 705 men (112 AA and 593 CS) who had pathologic Gleason score≤6 (low-grade disease). Using this cohort, we determined whether race affected FFbF in men with RP-proven low-grade disease and similar CAPRA-S scores.
RESULTS: With a median follow-up time of 27 months, the overall 7-year FFbF rate was 86% vs. 79% in CS and AA men, respectively (P = 0.035). There was no significant difference in one or more adverse pathologic features between CS vs. AA men (27% vs. 31%; P = 0.35) or CAPRA-S score (P = 0.28). In the subset analysis of patients with low-grade disease, AA race was associated with worse FFbF outcomes (P = 0.002). Furthermore, AA race was a significant predictor of FFbF in men with low-grade disease (hazard ratio = 2.01, 95% CI: 1.08-3.72; P = 0.029).
CONCLUSIONS: AA race is a predictor of worse FFbF outcomes in men with low-grade disease after RP. These results suggest that a subset of AA men with low-grade disease may benefit from more aggressive treatment
