Structure of bottle-brush brushes under good solvent conditions. A molecular dynamics study
We report a simulation study for bottle-brush polymers grafted on a rigid
backbone. Using a standard coarse-grained bead-spring model extensive molecular
dynamics simulations for such macromolecules under good solvent conditions are
performed. We consider a broad range of parameters and present numerical
results for the monomer density profile, density of the untethered ends of the
grafted flexible backbones and the correlation function describing the range
that neighboring grafted bottle-brushes are affected by the presence of the
others due to the excluded volume interactions. The end beads of the flexible
backbones of the grafted bottle-brushes do not access the region close to the
rigid backbone due to the presence of the side chains of the grafted
bottle-brush polymers, which stretch further the chains in the radial
directions. Although a number of different correlation lengths exist as a
result of the complex structure of these macromolecules, their properties can
be tuned with high accuracy in good solvents. Moreover, qualitative differences
with "typical" bottle-brushes are discussed. Our results provide a first
approach to characterizing such complex macromolecules with a standard bead

Fungal gold and firewood on the Tibetan plateau: Examining access to diverse ecosystem provisioning services within a rural community
Provisioning ecosystem services include wild products that form an integral part of rural economies. Using quantitative and qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with 50 households in a Tibetan community in Western Sichuan, China, we explored the relationships of households with three diverse provisioning services on the Eastern Tibetan plateau: firewood, medicinal caterpillar fungus Ophiocordyceps sinensis and matsutake mushrooms Tricholoma matsutake. We examined (1) how they contribute to wealth and livelihoods, (2) what determines household access, and (3) how local use has changed over time. All households were reliant on firewood, and levels extracted were explained only by household size. A more complex set of factors explained access to caterpillar fungus: younger, larger, pastoralist households with lower dependency ratios tended to collect more, and education and household size explained variation in price gained for the product. Caterpillar fungus extraction has dramatically increased over the last 20 years, providing up to 72% of household income, but poorer households have received significantly less of their income from the fungus. Matsutake contributed much less to livelihoods because of its relatively low price. The results show a contrast between subsistence and market-driven products: access to the latter is affected by competition and power relationships. Overall access to provisioning services was related to facets of wealth, especially human capital. The study contributes a household level analysis of the diverse provisioning value of an under-researched part of the world, highlighting the heterogeneity and dynamism of the relationships of households with ecosystem services
The OLYMPUS Internal Hydrogen Target
An internal hydrogen target system was developed for the OLYMPUS experiment
at DESY, in Hamburg, Germany. The target consisted of a long, thin-walled,
tubular cell within an aluminum scattering chamber. Hydrogen entered at the
center of the cell and exited through the ends, where it was removed from the
beamline by a multistage pumping system. A cryogenic coldhead cooled the target
cell to counteract heating from the beam and increase the density of hydrogen
in the target. A fixed collimator protected the cell from synchrotron radiation
and the beam halo. A series of wakefield suppressors reduced heating from beam
wakefields. The target system was installed within the DORIS storage ring and
was successfully operated during the course of the OLYMPUS experiment in 2012.
Information on the design, fabrication, and performance of the target system is

Interaction and observation: categorical semantics of reactive systems trough dialgebras
We use dialgebras, generalising both algebras and coalgebras, as a complement
of the standard coalgebraic framework, aimed at describing the semantics of an
interactive system by the means of reaction rules. In this model, interaction
is built-in, and semantic equivalence arises from it, instead of being
determined by a (possibly difficult) understanding of the side effects of a
component in isolation. Behavioural equivalence in dialgebras is determined by
how a given process interacts with the others, and the obtained observations.
We develop a technique to inter-define categories of dialgebras of different
functors, that in particular permits us to compare a standard coalgebraic
semantics and its dialgebraic counterpart. We exemplify the framework using the
CCS and the pi-calculus. Remarkably, the dialgebra giving semantics to the
pi-calculus does not require the use of presheaf categories
Motivated proteins: a web application for studying small three-dimensional protein motifs
<b>BACKGROUND:</b> Small loop-shaped motifs are common constituents of the three-dimensional structure of proteins. Typically they comprise between three and seven amino acid residues, and are defined by a combination of dihedral angles and hydrogen bonding partners. The most abundant of these are alphabeta-motifs, asx-motifs, asx-turns, beta-bulges, beta-bulge loops, beta-turns, nests, niches, Schellmann loops, ST-motifs, ST-staples and ST-turns.We have constructed a database of such motifs from a range of high-quality protein structures and built a web application as a visual interface to this. <b>DESCRIPTION:</b> The web application, Motivated Proteins, provides access to these 12 motifs (with 48 sub-categories) in a database of over 400 representative proteins. Queries can be made for specific categories or sub-categories of motif, motifs in the vicinity of ligands, motifs which include part of an enzyme active site, overlapping motifs, or motifs which include a particular amino acid sequence. Individual proteins can be specified, or, where appropriate, motifs for all proteins listed. The results of queries are presented in textual form as an (X)HTML table, and may be saved as parsable plain text or XML. Motifs can be viewed and manipulated either individually or in the context of the protein in the Jmol applet structural viewer. Cartoons of the motifs imposed on a linear representation of protein secondary structure are also provided. Summary information for the motifs is available, as are histograms of amino acid distribution, and graphs of dihedral angles at individual positions in the motifs. <b>CONCLUSION:</b> Motivated Proteins is a publicly and freely accessible web application that enables protein scientists to study small three-dimensional motifs without requiring knowledge of either Structured Query Language or the underlying database schem
Interfaces in Diblocks: A Study of Miktoarm Star Copolymers
We study AB miktoarm star block copolymers in the strong segregation
limit, focussing on the role that the AB interface plays in determining the
phase behavior. We develop an extension of the kinked-path approach which
allows us to explore the energetic dependence on interfacial shape. We consider
a one-parameter family of interfaces to study the columnar to lamellar
transition in asymmetric stars. We compare with recent experimental results. We
discuss the stability of the A15 lattice of sphere-like micelles in the context
of interfacial energy minimization. We corroborate our theory by implementing a
numerically exact self-consistent field theory to probe the phase diagram and

Full abstraction for fair testing in CCS
In previous work with Pous, we defined a semantics for CCS which may both be
viewed as an innocent presheaf semantics and as a concurrent game semantics. It
is here proved that a behavioural equivalence induced by this semantics on CCS
processes is fully abstract for fair testing equivalence. The proof relies on a
new algebraic notion called playground, which represents the 'rule of the
game'. From any playground, two languages, equipped with labelled transition
systems, are derived, as well as a strong, functional bisimulation between

Support for graphicacy: a review of textbooks available to accounting students
This Teaching Note reports on the support available in textbooks for graphicacy that will help students understand the complexities of graphical displays. Graphical displays play a significant role in financial reporting, and studies have found evidence of measurement distortion and selection bias. To understand the complexities of graphical displays, students need a sound understanding of graphicacy and support from the textbooks available to them to develop that understanding. The Teaching Note reports on a survey that examined the textbooks available to students attending two Scottish universities. The support of critical graphicacy skills was examined in conjunction with textbook characteristics. The survey, which was not restricted to textbooks designated as required reading, examined the textbooks for content on data measurement and graphical displays. The findings highlight a lack of support for graphicacy in the textbooks selected. The study concludes that accounting educators need to scrutinize more closely the selection of textbooks and calls for more extensive research into textbooks as a pedagogic tool
‘I’d be proud to spend the sacred foreign aid budget on our poor pensioners’: Representations of macro aid resourcing in the Irish, UK and US print-media during the economic crisis, 2008–2011
The news-media has been identified as an influence on donor nations’ overseas aid allocations, acting as a site where decisions are justified to ‘domestic constituencies’ and through which resistance is mobilised. Mediated pressures on aid allocations amplified between 2008 and 2011 in three donor countries experiencing domestic economic difficulties: Ireland, the UK and the US. This study suggests that each country’s print-media positioned the macro resourcing of aid primarily as an inward concern, neglected recipient country needs, and made weak connections to international policy frameworks to benchmark, contextualise and rationalise aid allocations. The research suggests that the explanatory limitations of the countries’ news-models in communicating the processes and rationales underpinning macro aid resourcing may be a factor in sustaining a knowledge and legitimacy deficit among domestic publics for international aid agreements
Fluctuations of a driven membrane in an electrolyte
We develop a model for a driven cell- or artificial membrane in an
electrolyte. The system is kept far from equilibrium by the application of a DC
electric field or by concentration gradients, which causes ions to flow through
specific ion-conducting units (representing pumps, channels or natural pores).
We consider the case of planar geometry and Debye-H\"{u}ckel regime, and obtain
the membrane equation of motion within Stokes hydrodynamics. At steady state,
the applied field causes an accumulation of charges close to the membrane,
which, similarly to the equilibrium case, can be described with renormalized
membrane tension and bending modulus. However, as opposed to the equilibrium
situation, we find new terms in the membrane equation of motion, which arise
specifically in the out-of-equilibrium case. We show that these terms lead in
