Kepler-210: An active star with at least two planets
We report the detection and characterization of two short-period,
Neptune-sized planets around the active host star Kepler-210. The host star's
parameters derived from those planets are (a) mutually inconsistent and (b) do
not conform to the expected host star parameters. We furthermore report the
detection of transit timing variations (TTVs) in the O-C diagrams for both
planets. We explore various scenarios that explain and resolve those
discrepancies. A simple scenario consistent with all data appears to be one
that attributes substantial eccentricities to the inner short-period planets
and that interprets the TTVs as due to the action of another, somewhat longer
period planet. To substantiate our suggestions, we present the results of
N-body simulations that modeled the TTVs and that checked the stability of the

Land and water management in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo: Presentation of the geographic and institutional context.
The most populated and industrialized region of Latin America, the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo host 18 millions people in 39 municipalities. The urban water services are managed in a centralized way by a state firm which provides for a domestic demand of 63 m3/s of which 50 % is imported from a neighbouring catchment. Half of the water comes from the periurban catchments of the agglomeration which are submitted to a rapid subnormal urbanization with inadequate sanitation arrangement that directly impact the quality of the water. The tensions are likely to increase with the increasing population and difficulties for the sanitation authorities to keep pace with the urbanization processes. Land management is under the responsibility of the municipalities but a specific land legislation to control urbanization in the catchment defined in the 70's did not permit to control urbanization. The implementation since 1995 of an integrated water management policy has permitted to implement multi-stakeholder platforms for water managemen called catchment commiteet, to better articulate land management and water management, as well as to facilitate the participation of civil society in the process. satisfied for such maps, or whether it is sufficient to prove the Jacobian

Neo-republicanism as a route to animal non-domination
In this article, we reinterpret the current political turn in animal rights theory in terms of republican as opposed to liberal political theory. By appealing to the values of liberty and fraternity as well as equality, we argue for a conception of animal liberation from human domination and not from humanity per se. This establishes a basis of liberty and fraternity in our cooperative relationships with animals in a "zoopolis," or interspecies political community. We contend that such a basis for interspecies political cooperation is not available on the more traditional model of animal liberation, where rights are derived from weak equality of the species
Exploring the action landscape with trial world-lines
The Hamilton action principle, also known as the principle of least action,
and Lagrange equations are an integral part of advanced undergraduate
mechanics. At present, substantial efforts are ongoing to suitably incorporate
the action principle in introductory physics courses. Although the Hamilton
principle is oft stated as "the action for any nearby trial world-line is
greater than the action for the classical world-line", the landscape of action
in the space of world-lines is rarely explored. Here, for three common problems
in introductory physics - a free particle, a uniformly accelerating particle,
and a simple harmonic oscillator - we present families of trial world-lines,
characterized by a few parameters, that evolve continuously from their
respective classical world-lines. With explicit analytical expressions
available for the action, they permit a graphical visualization of the action
landscape in the space of nearby world-lines. Although these trial world-lines
form only a subset of the space of all nearby world-lines, they provide a
pedagogical tool that complements the traditional Lagrange equation approach

Generalized Robba rings
We prove that any projective coadmissible module over the locally analytic
distribution algebra of a compact -adic Lie group is finitely generated. In
particular, the category of coadmissible modules does not have enough
projectives. In the Appendix a "generalized Robba ring" for uniform pro-
groups is constructed which naturally contains the locally analytic
distribution algebra as a subring. The construction uses the theory of
generalized microlocalization of quasi-abelian normed algebras that is also
developed there. We equip this generalized Robba ring with a self-dual locally
convex topology extending the topology on the distribution algebra. This is

Long-Term Optical Monitoring of Eta Carinae. Multiband light curves for a complete orbital period
The periodicity of 5.5 years for some observational events occurring in Eta
Carinae manifests itself across a large wavelength range and has been
associated with its binary nature. These events are supposed to occur when the
binary components are close to periastron. To detect the previous periastron
passage of Eta Car in 2003, we started an intensive, ground-based, optical,
photometric observing campaign. We continued observing the object to monitor
its photometric behavior and variability across the entire orbital cycle. Our
observation program consisted of daily differential photometry from CCD images,
which were acquired using a 0.8 m telescope and a standard BVRI filter set at
La Plata Observatory. The photometry includes the central object and the
surrounding Homunculus nebula. We present up-to-date results of our observing
program, including homogeneous photometric data collected between 2003 and
2008. Our observations demonstrated that Eta Car has continued increasing in
brightness at a constant rate since 1998. In 2006, it reached its brightest
magnitude (V ~ 4.7) since about 1860s. The object then suddenly reverted its
brightening trend, fading to V = 5.0 at the beginning of 2007, and has
maintained a quite steady state since then. We continue the photometric
monitoring of Eta Car in anticipation of the next "periastron passage",

Cortical topography of intracortical inhibition influences the speed of decision making
The neocortex contains orderly topographic maps; however, their functional role remains controversial. Theoretical studies have suggested a role in minimizing computational costs, whereas empirical studies have focused on spatial localization. Using a tactile multiple-choice reaction time (RT) task before and after the induction of perceptual learning through repetitive sensory stimulation, we extend the framework of cortical topographies by demonstrating that the topographic arrangement of intracortical inhibition contributes to the speed of human perceptual decision-making processes. RTs differ among fingers, displaying an inverted U-shaped function. Simulations using neural fields show the inverted U-shaped RT distribution as an emergent consequence of lateral inhibition. Weakening inhibition through learning shortens RTs, which is modeled through topographically reorganized inhibition. Whereas changes in decision making are often regarded as an outcome of higher cortical areas, our data show that the spatial layout of interaction processes within representational maps contributes to selection and decision-making processes
Broad-band spectrophotometry of the hot Jupiter HAT-P-12b from the near-UV to the near-IR
The detection of trends or gradients in the transmission spectrum of
extrasolar planets is possible with observations at very low spectral
resolution. Transit measurements of sufficient accuracy using selected
broad-band filters allow for an initial characterization of the atmosphere of
the planet. We obtained time series photometry of 20 transit events and
analyzed them homogeneously, along with eight light curves obtained from the
literature. In total, the light curves span a range from 0.35 to 1.25 microns.
During two observing seasons over four months each, we monitored the host star
to constrain the potential influence of starspots on the derived transit
parameters. We rule out the presence of a Rayleigh slope extending over the
entire optical wavelength range, a flat spectrum is favored for HAT-P-12b with
respect to a cloud-free atmosphere model spectrum. A potential cause of such
gray absorption is the presence of a cloud layer at the probed latitudes.
Furthermore, in this work we refine the transit parameters, the ephemeris and
perform a TTV analysis in which we found no indication for an unseen companion.
The host star showed a mild non-periodic variability of up to 1%. However, no

Principal Component Regression predicts functional responses across individuals
International audienceInter-subject variability is a major hurdle for neuroimaging group-level inference, as it creates complex image patterns that are not captured by standard analysis models and jeopardizes the sensitivity of statistical procedures. A solution to this problem is to model random subjects effects by using the redundant information conveyed by multiple imaging contrasts. In this paper, we introduce a novel analysis framework, where we estimate the amount of variance that is fit by a random effects subspace learned on other images; we show that a principal component regression estimator outperforms other regression models and that it fits a significant proportion (10% to 25%) of the between-subject variability. This proves for the first time that the accumulation of contrasts in each individual can provide the basis for more sensitive neuroimaging group analyzes
