Applications of the Ashtekar gravity to four dimensional hyperk\"ahler geometry and Yang-Mills Instantons

    Get PDF
The Ashtekar-Mason-Newman equations are used to construct the hyperk\"ahler metrics on four dimensional manifolds. These equations are closely related to anti self-dual Yang-Mills equations of the infinite dimensional gauge Lie algebras of all volume preserving vector fields. Several examples of hyperk\"ahler metrics are presented through the reductions of anti self-dual connections. For any gauge group anti self-dual connections on hyperk\"ahler manifolds are constructed using the solutions of both Nahm and Laplace equations.Comment: 9pages, Figures are not include

Characterizing top gated bilayer graphene interaction with its environment by Raman spectroscopy

In this work we study the behavior of the optical phonon modes in bilayer graphene devices by applying top gate voltage, using Raman scattering. We observe the splitting of the Raman G band as we tune the Fermi level of the sample, which is explained in terms of mixing of the Raman (Eg) and infrared (Eu) phonon modes, due to different doping in the two layers. We theoretically analyze our data in terms of the bilayer graphene phonon self-energy which includes non-homogeneous charge carrier doping between the graphene layers. We show that the comparison between the experiment and theoretical model not only gives information about the total charge concentration in the bilayer graphene device, but also allows to separately quantify the amount of unintentional charge coming from the top and the bottom of the system, and therefore to characterize the interaction of bilayer graphene with its surrounding environment

    Tadpole Analysis of Orientifolded Plane-Waves

We study orientifolds of type IIB string theory in the plane-wave background supported by null RR 3-form flux F^{(3)}. We describe how to extract the RR tadpoles in the Green-Schwarz formalism in a general setting. Two models with orientifold groups {1, \Omega} and {1,\Omega I_4}, which are T-dual to each other, are considered. Consistency of these backgrounds requires 32 D9 branes for the first model and 32 D5 branes for the second one. We study the spectra and comment on the heterotic duals of our models.Comment: 22+1 pages, 3 figures References added, minor typos correcte

Critical exponents of domain walls in the two-dimensional Potts model

We address the geometrical critical behavior of the two-dimensional Q-state Potts model in terms of the spin clusters (i.e., connected domains where the spin takes a constant value). These clusters are different from the usual Fortuin-Kasteleyn clusters, and are separated by domain walls that can cross and branch. We develop a transfer matrix technique enabling the formulation and numerical study of spin clusters even when Q is not an integer. We further identify geometrically the crossing events which give rise to conformal correlation functions. This leads to an infinite series of fundamental critical exponents h_{l_1-l_2,2 l_1}, valid for 0 </- Q </- 4, that describe the insertion of l_1 thin and l_2 thick domain walls.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabl

Formation of p-n junction in polymer electrolyte-top gated bilayer graphene transistor

We show simultaneous p and n type carrier injection in bilayer graphene channel by varying the longitudinal bias across the channel and the top gate voltage. The top gate is applied electrochemically using solid polymer electrolyte and the gate capacitance is measured to be 1.5 μF/cm2\mu F/cm^2, a value about 125 times higher than the conventional SiO2_2 back gate capacitance. Unlike the single layer graphene, the drain-source current does not saturate on varying the drain-source bias voltage. The energy gap opened between the valence and conduction bands using top and back gate geometry is estimated.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figure

Spatial 't Hooft loop to cubic order in hot QCD

Spatial 't Hooft loops of strength k measure the qualitative change in the behaviour of electric colour flux in confined and deconfined phase of SU (N) gauge theory. They show an area law in the deconfined phase, known analytica lly to two loop order with a ``k-scaling'' law k(N-k). In this paper we comput e the O(g^3) correction to the tension. It is due to neutral gluon fields that get their mass through interaction with the wall. The simple k-scaling is lost in cubic order. The generic problem of non-convexity shows up in this order an d the cure is provided. The result for large N is explicitely given. We show tha t nonperturbative effects appear at O(g^5).Comment: 22 pages.
