"Uma casa portuguesa, com certeza" : design de interiores para os aviões da companhia aérea de Portugal (1945-1979)
O contexto no qual se insere o presente artigo deriva de uma investigação para doutoramento em design (FAUL) nas áreas da História e Critica de design sobre a companhia aérea TAP Portugal, desde a sua génese (1945) até ao ano em que alterou a designação para Air Portugal (1979). O espaço interior de um avião de uma companhia de bandeira foi sempre uma extensão territorial “encenada” para consumo interno e externo, o que justificou, no caso dos TAP, um compromisso entre a ideologia e o gosto oficial do Estado Novo e os clichés da indústria de turismo à escala internacional. “Portugal no ar”, metonímia de avião TAP, procurou transmitir a imagem de um país moderno (apenas existente “nas nuvens”). Apesar da crescente importância da tecnologia, em linha com os êxitos da engenharia aeronáutica, cada avião TAP conseguiu ser a “casa portuguesa”, onde nacionais e estrangeiros puderam antecipar a chegada a Portugal, ou guardar a última recordação do país.Abstract :
The context in which this article is presented derives from a Phd research in design (FAUL) covering the areas of Design History and Criticism on the airline TAP Portugal, since its beginnings (1945) until the year in which the designation changed to Air Portugal (1979). The interior of a flag carrier aircraft was always a territorial extension “staged” for inner and outer consumption, which in TAP’s case meant, a compromise between the ideology and the official taste of the Estado Novo, and the international tourism clichés. Comparison of upper body strength gains between men and women after 10 weeks of resistance training
Resistance training (RT) offers benefits to both men and women. However, the studies about the differences between men and women in response to an RT program are not conclusive and few data are available about upper body strength response. The aim of this study was to compare elbow flexor strength gains in men and women after 10 weeks of RT. Forty-four college-aged men (22.63 +/- 2.34 years) and forty-seven college-aged women (21.62 +/- 2.96 years) participated in the study. The RT program was performed two days a week for 10 weeks. Before and after the training period, peak torque (PT) of the elbow flexors was measured with an isokinetic dynamometer. PT values were higher in men in comparison to women in pre-and post-tests (p 0.05). Effect sizes were 0.57 and 0.56 for men and women, respectively. In conclusion, the present study suggests that men and women have a similar upper body strength response to RT
Dimension dependent hypercontractivity for Gaussian kernels
We derive sharp, local and dimension dependent hypercontractive bounds on the
Markov kernel of a large class of diffusion semigroups. Unlike the dimension
free ones, they capture refined properties of Markov kernels, such as trace
estimates. They imply classical bounds on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck semigroup and
a dimensional and refined (transportation) Talagrand inequality when applied to
the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. Hypercontractive bounds on the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck
semigroup driven by a non-diffusive L\'evy semigroup are also investigated.

The influence of muscles activation on the dynamical behaviour of the tympano-ossicular system of the middle ear
The human ear is a complex biomechanical system and is divided into three parts: outer, middle and inner ear. The middle ear is formed by ossicles (malleus, incus and stapes), ligaments, muscles and tendons, which transfers sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear, linking with mastoid and Eustachian tube. In this work, a finite element modelling of the tympano-ossicular system of the middle ear was developed. A dynamic study based on a structural response to harmonic vibrations, for a sound pressure level (SPL) of 110, 120 and 130 dB SPL applied in the eardrum, is presented. The connection between the ossicles is made using a contact formulation. The model includes the different ligaments considering its hyperelastic behaviour. The activation of the muscles is based on the constitutive model proposed by previous work. The harmonic responses of displacement and pressure obtained on the stapes footplate, for a frequency range between 100 Hz and 10 kHz, are obtained simulating the muscle activation. The results are compared considering the passive and active states. The results are discussed and they are in accordance with audiological data published with reference to the effects of the middle ear muscles contraction
Effects of the fibers distribution in the human eardrum: A biomechanical study
The eardrum separates the external ear from the middle ear and it is responsible to convert the acoustical energy into mechanical energy. It is divided by pars tensa and pars flaccida. The aim of this work is to analyze the susceptibility of the four quadrants of the pars tensa under negative pressure, to different lamina propria fibers distribution. The development of associated ear pathology, in particular the formation of retraction pockets, is also evaluated. To analyze these effects, a computational biomechanical model of the tympano-ossicular chain was constructed using computerized tomography images and based on the finite element method. Three fibers distributions in the eardrum middle layer were compared: case 1 (eardrum with a circular band of fibers surrounding all quadrants equally), case 2 (eardrum with a circular band of fibers that decreases in thickness in posterior quadrants), case 3 (eardrum without circular fibers in the posterior/superior quadrant). A static analysis was performed by applying approximately 3000Pa in the eardrum. The pars tensa of the eardrum was divided in four quadrants and the displacement of a central point of each quadrant analyzed. The largest displacements of the eardrum were obtained for the eardrum without circular fibers in the posterior/superior quadrant
Effects of eight weeks of time-restricted feeding (16/8) on basal metabolism, maximal strength, body composition, inflammation, and cardiovascular risk factors in resistance-trained males
Background: Intermittent fasting (IF) is an increasingly popular dietary approach used for weight loss and overall health. While there is an increasing body of evidence demonstrating beneficial effects of IF on blood lipids and other health outcomes in the overweight and obese, limited data are available about the effect of IF in athletes. Thus, the present study sought to investigate the effects of a modified IF protocol (i.e. time-restricted feeding) during resistance training in healthy resistance-trained males. Methods: Thirty-four resistance-trained males were randomly assigned to time-restricted feeding (TRF) or normal diet group (ND). TRF subjects consumed 100 % of their energy needs in an 8-h period of time each day, with their caloric intake divided into three meals consumed at 1 p.m., 4 p.m., and 8 p.m. The remaining 16 h per 24-h period made up the fasting period. Subjects in the ND group consumed 100 % of their energy needs divided into three meals consumed at 8 a.m., 1 p.m., and 8 p.m. Groups were matched for kilocalories consumed and macronutrient distribution (TRF 2826 \ub1 412.3 kcal/day, carbohydrates 53.2 \ub1 1.4 %, fat 24.7 \ub1 3.1 %, protein 22.1 \ub1 2.6 %, ND 3007 \ub1 444.7 kcal/day, carbohydrates 54.7 \ub1 2.2 %, fat 23.9 \ub1 3.5 %, protein 21.4 \ub1 1.8). Subjects were tested before and after 8 weeks of the assigned diet and standardized resistance training program. Fat mass and fat-free mass were assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry and muscle area of the thigh and arm were measured using an anthropometric system. Total and free testosterone, insulin-like growth factor 1, blood glucose, insulin, adiponectin, leptin, triiodothyronine, thyroid stimulating hormone, interleukin-6, interleukin-1\u3b2, tumor necrosis factor \u3b1, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were measured. Bench press and leg press maximal strength, resting energy expenditure, and respiratory ratio were also tested. Results: After 8 weeks, the 2 Way ANOVA (Time * Diet interaction) showed a decrease in fat mass in TRF compared to ND (p = 0.0448), while fat-free mass, muscle area of the arm and thigh, and maximal strength were maintained in both groups. Testosterone and insulin-like growth factor 1 decreased significantly in TRF, with no changes in ND (p = 0.0476; p = 0.0397). Adiponectin increased (p = 0.0000) in TRF while total leptin decreased (p = 0.0001), although not when adjusted for fat mass. Triiodothyronine decreased in TRF, but no significant changes were detected in thyroid-stimulating hormone, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, or triglycerides. Resting energy expenditure was unchanged, but a significant decrease in respiratory ratio was observed in the TRF group. Conclusions: Our results suggest that an intermittent fasting program in which all calories are consumed in an 8-h window each day, in conjunction with resistance training, could improve some health-related biomarkers, decrease fat mass, and maintain muscle mass in resistance-trained males
