Local scale invariance in the parity conserving nonequilibrium kinetic Ising model
The local scale invariance has been investigated in the nonequilibrium
kinetic Ising model exhibiting absorbing phase transition of PC type in 1+1
dimension. Numerical evidence has been found for the satisfaction of this
symmetry and estimates for the critical ageing exponents are given.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures (IOP format), final form to appear in JSTA
Noise from metallic surfaces -- effects of charge diffusion
Non-local electrodynamic models are developed for describing metallic
surfaces for a diffusive metal. The electric field noise at a distance z_0 from
the surface is evaluated and compared with data from ion chips that show
anomalous heating with a noise power decaying as z_0^{-4}. We find that high
surface diffusion can account for the latter result.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures. Revised version focusing on charge diffusing and

Non-local scaling operators with entanglement renormalization
The multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) can be used, in
its scale invariant version, to describe the ground state of a lattice system
at a quantum critical point. From the scale invariant MERA one can determine
the local scaling operators of the model. Here we show that, in the presence of
a global symmetry , it is also possible to determine a class of
non-local scaling operators. Each operator consist, for a given group element
, of a semi-infinite string \tGamma_g with a local operator
attached to its open end. In the case of the quantum Ising model,
, they correspond to the disorder operator ,
the fermionic operators and , and all their descendants.
Together with the local scaling operators identity , spin
and energy , the fermionic and disorder scaling operators ,
and are the complete list of primary fields of the Ising
CFT. Thefore the scale invariant MERA allows us to characterize all the
conformal towers of this CFT.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Revised versio
On the predictive power of Local Scale Invariance
Local Scale Invariance (LSI) is a theory for anisotropic critical phenomena
designed in the spirit of conformal invariance. For a given representation of
its generators it makes non-trivial predictions about the form of universal
scaling functions. In the past decade several representations have been
identified and the corresponding predictions were confirmed for various
anisotropic critical systems. Such tests are usually based on a comparison of
two-point quantities such as autocorrelation and response functions. The
present work highlights a potential problem of the theory in the sense that it
may predict any type of two-point function. More specifically, it is argued
that for a given two-point correlator it is possible to construct a
representation of the generators which exactly reproduces this particular
correlator. This observation calls for a critical examination of the predictive
content of the theory.Comment: 17 pages, 2 eps figure
A high-sensitivity OH 5-cm line survey in late-type stars
We have undertaken a comprehensive search for 5-cm excited OH maser emission
from evolved stars representative of various stages of late stellar evolution.
Observed sources were selected from known 18-cm OH sources. This survey was
conducted with the 100-m Effelsberg telescope to achieve high signal to noise
ratio observations and a sensitivity limit of about 0.05 to 0.1 Jy. A total of
64 stellar sources were searched for both main line and satellite line
emission. We confirm the previous detection of 5 cm OH in Vy 2-2, do not
confirm emission from NML-Cyg and do not report any other new detection within
the above sensitivity limit.
Implications of these results on the pumping mechanism of the OH radical in
circumstellar envelopes are briefly discussed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, A&A in pres
Lattice two-point functions and conformal invariance
A new realization of the conformal algebra is studied which mimics the
behaviour of a statistical system on a discrete albeit infinite lattice. The
two-point function is found from the requirement that it transforms covariantly
under this realization. The result is in agreement with explicit lattice
calculations of the Ising model and the dimensional spherical
model. A hard core is found which is not present in the continuum. For a
semi-infinite lattice, profiles are also obtained.Comment: 5 pages, plain Tex with IOP macros, no figure
On the identification of quasiprimary scaling operators in local scale-invariance
The relationship between physical observables defined in lattice models and
the associated (quasi-)primary scaling operators of the underlying field-theory
is revisited. In the context of local scale-invariance, we argue that this
relationship is only defined up to a time-dependent amplitude and derive the
corresponding generalizations of predictions for two-time response and
correlation functions. Applications to non-equilibrium critical dynamics of
several systems, with a fully disordered initial state and vanishing initial
magnetization, including the Glauber-Ising model, the Frederikson-Andersen
model and the Ising spin glass are discussed. The critical contact process and
the parity-conserving non-equilibrium kinetic Ising model are also considered.Comment: 12 pages, Latex2e with IOP macros, 2 figures included; final for
Kinetics of the long-range spherical model
The kinetic spherical model with long-range interactions is studied after a
quench to or to . For the two-time response and correlation
functions of the order-parameter as well as for composite fields such as the
energy density, the ageing exponents and the corresponding scaling functions
are derived. The results are compared to the predictions which follow from
local scale-invariance.Comment: added "fluctuation-dissipation ratios"; fixed typo
