    Integrating visual and tactile information in the perirhinal cortex

    By virtue of its widespread afferent projections, perirhinal cortex is thought to bind polymodal information into abstract object-level representations. Consistent with this proposal, deficits in cross-modal integration have been reported after perirhinal lesions in nonhuman primates. It is therefore surprising that imaging studies of humans have not observed perirhinal activation during visual–tactile object matching. Critically, however, these studies did not differentiate between congruent and incongruent trials. This is important because successful integration can only occur when polymodal information indicates a single object (congruent) rather than different objects (incongruent). We scanned neurologically intact individuals using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while they matched shapes. We found higher perirhinal activation bilaterally for cross-modal (visual–tactile) than unimodal (visual–visual or tactile–tactile) matching, but only when visual and tactile attributes were congruent. Our results demonstrate that the human perirhinal cortex is involved in cross-modal, visual–tactile, integration and, thus, indicate a functional homology between human and monkey perirhinal cortices

    The health state preferences and logistical inconsistencies of New Zealanders: a tale of two tariffs

    Notwithstanding the proposed use of Cost-Utility Analysis (CUA) to inform health care priority setting in New Zealand, to date there has been no research into New Zealanders’ valuations of health-related quality of life. This paper reports the results of a study of the health state preferences of adult New Zealanders generated from a postal survey to which 1360 people responded (a 50% response rate). The survey employed a self-completed questionnaire in which a selection of health states were described using the EQ-5D health state classification system and respondents’ valuations were sought using a visual analogue scale (VAS). Close attention is paid to the quality of the data, in particular to the ‘logical inconsistencies’ in respondents’ valuations. Regression analysis is used to interpolate values over the 245 possible EQ-5D states.     The magnetic reorientation transition in thin ferromagnetic films treated by many-body Green's function theory

    This contribution describes the reorientation of the magnetization of thin ferromagnetic Heisenberg films as function of the temperature and/or an external field. Working in a rotating frame allows an exact treatment of the single-ion anisotropy when going to higher-order Green's functions.     Accelerator measurement of the energy spectra of neutrons emitted in the interaction of 3-GeV protons with several elements

    The application of time of flight techniques for determining the shapes of the energy spectra of neutrons between 20 and 400 MeV is discussed. The neutrons are emitted at 20, 34, and 90 degrees in the bombardment of targets by 3 GeV protons. The targets used are carbon, aluminum, cobalt, and platinum with cylindrical cross section. Targets being bombarded are located in the internal circulating beam of a particle accelerator

    Herschel and ALMA Observations of Massive SZE-selected Clusters

    We present new Herschel observations of four massive, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich Effect (SZE)-selected clusters at 0.3z1.10.3 \leq z \leq 1.1, two of which have also been observed with ALMA. We detect 19 Herschel/PACS counterparts to spectroscopically confirmed cluster members, five of which have redshifts determined via CO(434-3) and [CI](3P13P0{}^3P_1 - {}^3P_0) lines. The mean [CI]/CO line ratio is 0.19±0.070.19 \pm 0.07 in brightness temperature units, consistent with previous results for field samples. We do not detect significant stacked ALMA dust continuum or spectral line emission, implying upper limits on mean interstellar medium (H2_2 + HI) and molecular gas masses. An apparent anticorrelation of LIRL_{IR} with clustercentric radius is driven by the tight relation between star formation rate and stellar mass. We find average specific star formation rate log(sSFR/yr1^{-1}) = -10.36, which is below the SFRM-M_* correlation measured for field galaxies at similar redshifts. The fraction of infrared-bright galaxies (IRBGs; log(LIR/L)>10.6\log (L_{IR}/L_\odot) > 10.6) per cluster and average sSFR rise significantly with redshift. For CO detections, we find fgas0.2f_{gas} \sim 0.2, comparable to those of field galaxies, and gas depletion timescales of about 2 Gyr. We use radio observations to distinguish active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from star-forming galaxies. At least four of our 19 Herschel cluster members have qIR<1.8q_{IR} < 1.8, implying an AGN fraction fAGN0.2f_{AGN} \gtrsim 0.2 for our PACS-selected sample.Comment: Accepted in ApJ, 46 pages, 13 figure

    90GHz and 150GHz observations of the Orion M42 region. A sub-millimeter to radio analysis

    We have used the new 90GHz MUSTANG camera on the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) to map the bright Huygens region of the star-forming region M42 with a resolution of 9" and a sensitivity of 2.8mJy/beam. 90GHz is an interesting transition frequency, as MUSTANG detects both the free-free emission characteristic of the HII region created by the Trapezium stars, normally seen at lower frequencies, and thermal dust emission from the background OMC1 molecular cloud, normally mapped at higher frequencies. We also present similar data from the 150GHz GISMO camera taken on the IRAM telescope. This map has 15" resolution. By combining the MUSTANG data with 1.4, 8, and 21GHz radio data from the VLA and GBT, we derive a new estimate of the emission measure (EM) averaged electron temperature of Te = 11376K by an original method relating free-free emission intensities at optically thin and optically thick frequencies. Combining ISO-LWS data with our data, we derive a new estimate of the dust temperature and spectral emissivity index within the 80" ISO-LWS beam toward OrionKL/BN, Td = 42K and Beta=1.3. We show that both Td and Beta decrease when going from the HII region and excited OMC1 interface to the denser UV shielded part of OMC1 (OrionKL/BN, Orion S). With a model consisting of only free-free and thermal dust emission we are able to fit data taken at frequencies from 1.5GHz to 854GHz.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures, submitted to the Astrophysical Journa

    Mapping the CMB II: the second flight of the QMAP experiment

    We report the results from the second flight of QMAP, an experiment to map the cosmic microwave background near the North Celestial Pole. We present maps of the sky at 31 and 42 GHz as well as a measurement of the angular power spectrum covering the l-range 40-200. Anisotropy is detected at about 20 sigma and is in agreement with previous results at these angular scales.     Galactic microwave emission at degree angular scales

    We cross-correlate the Saskatoon Ka and Q-Band Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data with different maps to quantify possible foreground contamination. We detect a marginal correlation (2 sigma) with the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) 240, 140 and 100 microm maps, but we find no significant correlation with point sources, with the Haslam 408 MHz map or with the Reich and Reich 1420 MHz map. The rms amplitude of the component correlated with DIRBE is about 20% of the CMB signal. Interpreting this component as free-free emission, this normalization agrees with that of Kogut et al. (1996a; 1996b) and supports the hypothesis that the spatial correlation between dust and warm ionized gas observed on large angular scales persists to smaller angular scales. Subtracting this contribution from the CMB data reduces the normalization of the Saskatoon power spectrum by only a few percent.Comment: Minor revisions to match published version. 14 pages, with 2 figures included.
