Asymptotic solution of a model for bilayer organic diodes and solar cells
The current voltage characteristics of an organic semiconductor diode made by placing together two materials with dissimilar electron affinities and ionisation potentials is analysed using asymptotic methods. An intricate boundary layer structure is examined. We find that there are three regimes for the total current passing through the diode. For reverse bias and moderate forward bias the dependency of the voltage on the current is similar to the behaviour of conventional inorganic semiconductor diodes predicted by the Shockley equation and are governed by recombination at the interface of the materials. There is then a narrow range of currents where the behaviour undergoes a transition. Finally for large forward bias the behaviour is different with the current being linear in voltage and is primarily controlled by drift of charges in the organic layers. The size of the interfacial recombination rate is critical in determining the small range of current where there is rapid transition between the two main regimes. The extension of the theory to organic solar cells is discussed and the analogous current voltage curves derived in the regime of interest

Near infrared spectroscopy of W51 IRS-2
Near-infrared spectra at 2.95-3.5 μm and 3.99-10 μm have been obtained towards W51 IRS-2 and its surroundings, in order to investigate the spatial variations in intensity of the 3.28 μm unidentified feature and the 4.05 μm Brackett-α line. The Br-α and 3.28 μm features occupy a broadly similar spatial zone, which is characterised by an unresolved core responsible for most of the emission, and an extended and considerably weaker halo. Grain properties required to excite the 4.28 microns line, the nature of the 3.28 μm emission, and its relation to the source structure are discussed
The lower hybrid wave cutoff: A case study in eikonal methods
Eikonal, or ray tracing, methods are commonly used to estimate the
propagation of radio frequency fields in plasmas. While the information gained
from the rays is quite useful, an approximate solution for the fields would
also be valuable, e.g., for comparison to full wave simulations. Such
approximations are often difficult to perform numerically because of the
special care which must be taken to correctly reconstruct the fields near
reflection and focusing caustics. In this paper, we compare the standard
eikonal method for approximating fields to a method based on the dynamics of
wave packets. We compare the approximations resulting from these two methods to
the analytical solution for a lower hybrid wave reflecting from a cutoff. The
algorithm based on wave packets has the advantage that it can correctly deal

A Novel Antigen Sensitive to Calcium Chelation That is Associated with the Tip Links and Kinocilial Links of Sensory Hair Bundles
Tip links are extracellular, cell-surface-associated filaments of unknown molecular composition that are thought to gate the mechanotransducer channel of the sensory hair cell. They disappear from the hair bundle in response to calcium chelation and lanthanum treatment and resist degradation by the protease subtilisin. A monoclonal antibody derived from a hybridoma screen identified a novel antigen associated with tip links, the tip-link antigen. The tip-link antigen is also associated with kinocilial links, subtilisin-resistant filaments that are sensitive to calcium chelation and connect the kinocilium to the tallest stereocilia of the hair bundle. Furthermore, the tip-link antigen is expressed in the retina, where it is associated with the ciliary calyx, a ring of microvilli that surrounds the outer segment of the photoreceptor. The tip-link antigen rapidly disappears from the surface of the hair bundle in response to calcium chelation. It is also subtilisin resistant, relative to the ankle-link antigen, an antigen associated with another type of hair bundle link. The tip-link antigen is lanthanum sensitive and, like tip links, reappears on the surface of the hair bundle after calcium chelation. The monoclonal antibody to the tip-link antigen immunoprecipitates two concanavalin A-reactive polypeptides with apparent molecular masses of 200 and 250 kDa from detergent extracts of the retina. These results provide the first identification of a cell surface antigen associated with tip links, indicate that tip links share properties in common with kinocilial links, and reveal a second epitope that, along with the ankle-link antigen, is common to both sensory hair bundles and the ciliary calyx of photoreceptors
Integrating multiple representations: fighting asthma
This paper seeks to engage debates about integrating pluralisms regarding multiple forms/representations and how they might function smoothly if they are closely aligned. This paper offers, narrative poetry with an artistic impression aimed at seeing how these might interact with each other. Like poetry, visual images are unique and can evoke particular kinds of emotional and visceral responses. By offering narrative poetry together with an artistic representation it is not meant to de-value the importance of either, but it is aimed at seeing how these arts-based methods and creative analytical practices might unite as a narrative to offer knew ways of ‘knowing’ and ‘seeing
Economic evaluation of a nursing-led intermediate care unit
Objectives: The aim of this paper is to examine the costs of introducing a nursing-led ward program together with examining the impact this may have on patients' outcomes. Methods; The study had a sample size of 177 patients with a mean age of 77, and randomized to either a treatment group (care on a nursing-led ward, n = 97) or a control group (standard care usually on a consultant-led acute ward, n = 80). Resource use data including length of stay, tests and investigations performed, and multidisciplinary involvement in care were collected. Results: There were no significant differences in outcome between the two groups. The inpatient costs for the treatment group were significantly higher, due to the longer length of stay in this group. However, the postdischarge costs were significantly lower for the treatment group. Conclusions: The provision of nursing-led intermediate care units has been proposed as a solution to inappropriate use of acute medical wards by patients who require additional nursing rather than medical care. Whether the treatment group is ultimately cost-additive is dependent on how long reductions in postdischarge resource use are maintained

CO J = 3→2 and J = 2→1 mapping and spectroscopy of NGC 7027
We present spectra and mapping for NGC 7072 in the J = 3→2 and J = 2→1 transitions of CO. The central profile at J = 2→1 is shown to be very similar to the J = 1→0 spectrum measured by Thronson (1983), and this implies a source expansion at roughly constant velocity. The J = 3→2 line however appears weaker, with evidence for appreciable quenching of the higher velocity components. Detailed modelling f the source indicates that densities n must vary appreciably with shell radius R(as nα R-a, where α≥2), and this leads to a corresponding steep radial decrease in the radiation temperature TR. In consequence, the source FWHM is found to decrease appreciably iwth increasing transition frequency, a trend which appears also to be confirmed by our central J = 3→2 scans. It is not however possible to constrain gas kinetic tempertures TK, the level of CO thermalisation, or shell mass M with any degree of confidence - both low and high mass models appear capable of replicating our spectra.
Finally, the J = 2→1 spatial velocity map displays evidence for a decrease in velocity width towards the outer regions of the nebula; a feature which is expected of most outflow models. The J = 3→2 map also indicates the presence of a nebular extension to the north-west of the peak emission core, although this is not reproduced in the corresponding J = 1→0 map of Mufson et al. (1975)
Aminoglycoside-Induced Phosphatidylserine Externalization in Sensory Hair Cells Is Regionally Restricted, Rapid, and Reversible
The aminophospholipid phosphatidylserine (PS) is normally restricted to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane. During certain cellular processes, including apoptosis, PS translocates to the outer leaflet and can be labeled with externally applied annexin V, a calcium-dependent PS-binding protein. In mouse cochlear cultures, annexin V labeling reveals that the aminoglycoside antibiotic neomycin induces rapid PS externalization, specifically on the apical surface of hair cells. PS externalization is observed within ~75 s of neomycin perfusion, first on the hair bundle and then on membrane blebs forming around the apical surface. Whole-cell capacitance also increases significantly within minutes of neomycin application, indicating that blebbing is accompanied by membrane addition to the hair cell surface. PS externalization and membrane blebbing can, nonetheless, occur independently. Pretreating hair cells with calcium chelators, a procedure that blocks mechanotransduction, or overexpressing a phosphatidylinositol 4,5-biphosphate (PIP2)-binding pleckstrin homology domain, can reduce neomycin-induced PS externalization, suggesting that neomycin enters hair cells via transduction channels, clusters PIP2, and thereby activates lipid scrambling. The effects of short-term neomycin treatment are reversible. After neomycin washout, PS is no longer detected on the apical surface, apical membrane blebs disappear, and surface-bound annexin V is internalized, distributing throughout the supranuclear cytoplasm of the hair cell. Hair cells can therefore repair, and recover from, neomycin-induced surface damage. Hair cells lacking myosin VI, a minus-end directed actin-based motor implicated in endocytosis, can also recover from brief neomycin treatment. Internalized annexin V, however, remains below the apical surface, thereby pinpointing a critical role for myosin VI in the transport of endocytosed material away from the periphery of the hair cell
