    The BARISTA: A model for bid arrivals in online auctions

    The arrival process of bidders and bids in online auctions is important for studying and modeling supply and demand in the online marketplace. A popular assumption in the online auction literature is that a Poisson bidder arrival process is a reasonable approximation. This approximation underlies theoretical derivations, statistical models and simulations used in field studies. However, when it comes to the bid arrivals, empirical research has shown that the process is far from Poisson, with early bidding and last-moment bids taking place. An additional feature that has been reported by various authors is an apparent self-similarity in the bid arrival process. Despite the wide evidence for the changing bidding intensities and the self-similarity, there has been no rigorous attempt at developing a model that adequately approximates bid arrivals and accounts for these features. The goal of this paper is to introduce a family of distributions that well-approximate the bid time distribution in hard-close auctions. We call this the BARISTA process (Bid ARrivals In STAges) because of its ability to generate different intensities at different stages. We describe the properties of this model, show how to simulate bid arrivals from it, and how to use it for estimation and inference. We illustrate its power and usefulness by fitting simulated and real data from eBay.com.     Highly Accurate Determination of Heterogeneously Stacked Van-der-Waals Materials by Optical Microspectroscopy

    The composition of Van-der-Waals heterostructures is conclusively determined using a hybrid evaluation scheme of data acquired by optical microspectroscopy. This scheme deploys a parameter set comprising both change in reflectance and wavelength shift of distinct extreme values in reflectance spectra. Furthermore, the method is supported by an accurate analytical model describing reflectance of multilayer systems acquired by optical microspectroscopy. This approach allows uniquely for discrimination of 2D materials like graphene and hBN and, thus, quantitative analysis of Van-der-Waals heterostructures containing structurally very similar materials. The physical model features a transfer matrix method which allows for flexible, modular description of complex optical systems and may easily be extended to individual setups. It accounts for numerical apertures of applied objective lenses and a glass fiber which guides the light into the spectrometer by two individual weighting functions. The scheme is proven by highly accurate quantification of the number of layers of graphene and hBN in Van-der-Waals heterostructures. In this exemplary case, the fingerprint of graphene involves distinct deviations of reflectance accompanied by additional wavelength shifts of extreme values. In contrast to graphene the fingerprint of hBN reveals a negligible deviation in absolute reflectance causing this material being only detectable by spectral shifts of extreme values.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure

    Selection of morphological traits to improve forage characteristics of Setaria sphacelata grown in Florida.

    A genetically diverse population of Setaria sphacelata was developed at Gainesville, Florida by intercrossing the cultivars ?Narok?, ?Kazungula? and ?Solander? and a local persistent population. To determine heritability of traits that may improve setaria as a forage plant in Florida, progeny of the intercrossed population underwent two cycles of selection for inflorescence number and one cycle for leaf width. The selected populations, together with cultivars and introductions, were evaluated for morphological characters, yield and forage quality in field experiments with close- and wide-spaced plants. Increase of inflorescence number was not obtained by selection but resulted in decreased plant height, inflorescence length, yield, leaf width, and leafiness. Leaf width was increased by selection and was associated with increased leafiness and whole-plant crude protein content. The results suggest good prospects for selection of setaria cultivars suited to Florida with improved yield and quality providing they tolerate winter cold and reliably produce seed

    Quantum Interference of Coulomb Interaction and Disorder: Phase Shift of Friedel Oscillations and an Instability of the Fermi Sea

    We investigate the influence of interference between Coulomb interaction and impurity scattering on the static electronic response χ(0,q)\chi (0,q) in disordered metals to leading order in the effective Coulomb interaction. When the transport relaxation time τtr\tau _{tr} is much shorter than the quasiparticle life time, we find a \mbox{sgn}(2p_F-q)/\sqrt{|2p_F-q|} divergence of the polarization function at the Fermi surface (q=2pFq=2p_F). It causes a phase shift of the Friedel oscillations as well as an enhancement of their amplitude. Our results are consistent with experiments and may be relevant for understanding the stability of the amorphous state of certain alloys against crystallization.Comment: 11 pages, 4 PostScript figures appended as a self-extracting tar archive; includes output instruction

    A new approach to gas leakage detection in high pressure distribution networks is proposed, where the pipeline is modelled as a Linear Parameter Varying (LPV) System driven by the source node mass flow with the pressure as the scheduling parameter, and the system output as the mass flow at the offtake. Using a recently proposed successive approximations LPV system subspace identification algorithm, the pipeline is thus identified from operational data. The leak is detected using a Kalman filter where the fault is treated as an augmented state. The effectiveness of this method is illustrated with an example with a mixture of real and simulated data

    O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a diversidade genética entre plantas sexuais tetraploides de Panicum maximum do banco de germoplasma da Embrapa Gado de Corte, utilizando a técnica de polimorfismos de DNA amplificados ao acaso (RAPD). Quatroze plantas foram avaliadas com 17 primers. A similaridade genética foi calculada usando o coeficiente de Jaccard e o agrupamento foi feito pelo método de médias aritméticas dos pares de grupos não-balanceados (UPGMA) com base nas dissimilaridades. Uma análise de bootstrap foi feita para avaliar a consistência dos grupos formados. Um total de 145 bandas de DNA foi obtido, sendo que 128 (~88,3%) delas foram polimórficas entre as plantas estudadas. Os valores de similaridade variaram de 0,34 a 0,69. Quatro grupos foram formados e as plantas S16 e S13 não foram agrupadas com as plantas restantes, apresentando maior divergência genética. Os resultados mostram moderada diversidade genética entre as 14 plantas sexuais tetraploides de P. maximum estudadas.     Genetic diversity analysis among pigeonpea genotypes adapted to South American regions based on microsatellite markers.

    The pigeonpea [Cajanus cajan (L) Millspaugh] is one of the most important perennial legume crops utilized in the food, fodder, soil conservation, crop-livestock integrated systems, reclaiming of degraded pastures and symbiotic nitrogen fixation. Microsatellite markers were used to estimate the genetic diversity of 77 pigeonpea genotypes selected from the germplasm collections at Embrapa Cattle-Southeast and, to evaluate their transferability to Phaseolus vulgaris and Vigna unguiculata species. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to12, with an average of 5.1 alleles. The PIC values ranged from 0.11 to 0.80 (average 0.49) and the D values from 0.23 to 0.91 (average 0.58). The averages of observed and expected heterozygosity were 0.25 and 0.47, respectively, showing a deficit in heterozygosity. A model-based Bayesian approach implemented in the software STRUCTURE was used to assign genotypes into clusters. A dendrogram was constructed based on the modified Roger's genetic distances using a neighbor-joining method (NJ). A total of four clusters were assembled by STRUCTURE and a strong tendency of correspondence between the Bayesian clusters in the NJ tree was observed. The genetic distance ranged from 0.09 to 0.62 (average 0.37), showing a low genetic diversity in the pigeonpea genotypes. Transferability of pigeonpea-specific microsatellites revealed a cross-amplification and the presence of polymorphic alleles in P. vulgaris and V. unguiculata
