Aggregation Behavior And Chromonic Liquid Crystal Properties Of An Anionic Monoazo Dye
X-ray scattering and various optical techniques are utilized to study the aggregation process and chromonic liquid crystal phase of the anionic monoazo dye Sunset Yellow FCF. The x-ray results demonstrate that aggregation involves pi-pi stacking of the molecules into columns, with the columns undergoing a phase transition to an orientationally ordered chromonic liquid crystal phase at high dye concentration. Optical absorption measurements on dilute solutions reveal that the aggregation takes place at all concentrations, with the average aggregation number increasing with concentration. A simple theory based on the law of mass action and an isodesmic aggregation process is in excellent agreement with the experimental data and yields a value for the bond energy between molecules in an aggregate. Measurements of the birefringence and order parameter are also performed as a function of temperature in the chromonic liquid crystal phase. The agreement between these results and a more complicated theory of aggregation is quite reasonable. Overall, these results both confirm that the aggregation process for some dyes is isodesmic and provide a second example of a well-characterized chromonic system
Spectroscopic signatures of spin-charge separation in the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ
The electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor
TTF-TCNQ is studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The
experimental spectra reveal significant discrepancies to band theory. We
demonstrate that the measured dispersions can be consistently mapped onto the
one-dimensional Hubbard model at finite doping. This interpretation is further
supported by a remarkable transfer of spectral weight as function of
temperature. The ARPES data thus show spectroscopic signatures of spin-charge
separation on an energy scale of the conduction band width.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; to appear in PR
Lifetime of d-holes at Cu surfaces: Theory and experiment
We have investigated the hole dynamics at copper surfaces by high-resolution
angle-resolved photoemission experiments and many-body quasiparticle GW
calculations. Large deviations from a free-electron-like picture are observed
both in the magnitude and the energy dependence of the lifetimes, with a clear
indication that holes exhibit longer lifetimes than electrons with the same
excitation energy. Our calculations show that the small overlap of d- and
sp-states below the Fermi level is responsible for the observed enhancement.
Although there is qualitative good agreement of our theoretical predictions and
the measured lifetimes, there still exist some discrepancies pointing to the
need of a better description of the actual band structure of the solid.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, to appear in Phys. Rev.
Electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductor TTF-TCNQ
We study the electronic structure of the quasi-one-dimensional organic
conductor TTF-TCNQ by means of density-functional band theory, Hubbard model
calculations, and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES). The
experimental spectra reveal significant quantitative and qualitative
discrepancies to band theory. We demonstrate that the dispersive behavior as
well as the temperature-dependence of the spectra can be consistently explained
by the finite-energy physics of the one-dimensional Hubbard model at metallic
doping. The model description can even be made quantitative, if one accounts
for an enhanced hopping integral at the surface, most likely caused by a
relaxation of the topmost molecular layer. Within this interpretation the ARPES
data provide spectroscopic evidence for the existence of spin-charge separation
on an energy scale of the conduction band width. The failure of the
one-dimensional Hubbard model for the {\it low-energy} spectral behavior is
attributed to interchain coupling and the additional effect of electron-phonon

Interval valued (\in,\ivq)-fuzzy filters of pseudo -algebras
We introduce the concept of quasi-coincidence of a fuzzy interval value with
an interval valued fuzzy set. By using this new idea, we introduce the notions
of interval valued (\in,\ivq)-fuzzy filters of pseudo -algebras and
investigate some of their related properties. Some characterization theorems of
these generalized interval valued fuzzy filters are derived. The relationship
among these generalized interval valued fuzzy filters of pseudo -algebras
is considered. Finally, we consider the concept of implication-based interval
valued fuzzy implicative filters of pseudo -algebras, in particular, the
implication operators in Lukasiewicz system of continuous-valued logic are
discussed
Developments in the negative-U modelling of the cuprate HTSC systems
The paper deals with the many stands that go into creating the unique and
complex nature of the HTSC cuprates above Tc as below. Like its predecessors it
treats charge, not spin or lattice, as prime mover, but thus taken in the
context of the chemical bonding relevant to these copper oxides. The crucial
shell filling, negative-U, double-loading fluctuations possible there require
accessing at high valent local environment as prevails within the mixed valent,
inhomogeneous two sub-system circumstance of the HTSC materials. Close
attention is paid to the recent results from Corson, Demsar, Li, Johnson,

Professionalization of a nonstate actor
Can nonstate militants professionalize? That is the core question of this piece. Discussions of professionalism have spread to the state military from civilian professions such as education, medicine, and law. This piece examines whether nonstate actors exhibit the same fundamental processes found within these state-based organizations. These fundamentals are the creation of a recognized internal ethos, which acts as a collective standard for those involved. A commitment to expertise and the punishment of those who do not reach these collective expectations reinforce this ethos. To answer this question, this piece examines the development of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) during the Troubles. It highlights consistencies and inconsistencies with traditional forces and argues that groups like the PIRA can professionalize and increase their effectiveness in doing so. This widens the field of professionalism studies and provides an additional lens through which to examine nonstate groups
