    On the recurrence and robust properties of Lorenz'63 model

    Lie-Poisson structure of the Lorenz'63 system gives a physical insight on its dynamical and statistical behavior considering the evolution of the associated Casimir functions. We study the invariant density and other recurrence features of a Markov expanding Lorenz-like map of the interval arising in the analysis of the predictability of the extreme values reached by particular physical observables evolving in time under the Lorenz'63 dynamics with the classical set of parameters. Moreover, we prove the statistical stability of such an invariant measure.     Proyecto planta termo solar para compañia minera en Chile

[Parte II]La empresa minera estudiada, es una sociedad contractual minera, dedicada a la explotación y procesamiento de Cobre y Molibdeno. El yacimiento se ubica en la Región de Antofagasta y Comuna de Sierra Gorda. Es un yacimiento de baja ley en cobre y alta concentración de Molibdeno, con reservas comprobadas de más de 21 años a un ritmo de explotación de 110.000 Toneladas de procesamiento diario. La energía eléctrica, se obtiene del Sistema Interconectado del Norte Grande, en adelante SING, mediante un contrato spot. Sin embargo está en construcción una central termoeléctrica, en adelante CTE. CTE se construye en la comuna de Mejillones, distante a 180 km de la faena, es propiedad de la empresa AesGener y venderá la energía eléctrica a la minera mediante un contrato de suministro de energía, que fue suscrito entre las partes en Julio del año 2012. La Planta CTE entrará en operación comercial en Junio del año 2016. Este contrato, en adelante el PPA 1, tiene una duración de 21 años y define, entre otras cosas la cantidad de energía suministrada, su precio y la fórmula de actualización que se aplicará. La compañía minera posee una de las tasas más altas de radiación solar del mundo a lo largo de todo el año. Además dispone de terrenos en cantidad suficiente dentro de las mismas instalaciones de la minera ya condenados para la explotación minera, es decir sin recursos minerales en el subsuelo. Finalmente está el hecho de que los costos de las tecnologías relacionadas a la generación de energía eléctrica a partir de la energía solar se han vuelto totalmente competitivos con las tecnologías convencionales. Estos tres factores permiten analizar la factibilidad de construir una planta de generación eléctrica termo solar, en adelante PTS, que pueda abastecer parcial o totalmente la demanda de energía de la minera. Los aspectos claves para que la minera decida la realización del proyecto PTS está: 1) El desarrollo de una estrategia comercial que permita liquidar los excedentes de energía en el mercado eléctrico del SING. Este excedente de energía se producirá al reemplazar total o parcialmente la energía de los contratos existentes con la energía que provendrá de la PTS. 2) Cumplir con el pago de los costos fijos asociados al contrato con CTE y 3) Obtener un precio unitario final de energía para la compañía minera menor al que se obtendría si la energía fuera suministrada únicamente desde CTE. El análisis de esta propuesta de negocio aborda cada uno de los aspectos claves mencionados en el párrafo anterior. Además permite establecer una propuesta concreta para un inversionista que desee desarrollar esta oportunidad de negocio. Se plantea como modelo de negocios el que un tercero, seleccionado a través de un proceso de licitación, financie, construya y opere la PTS y comercialice para la minera la energía sobrante que se producirá, con un contrato con la compañía minera por un período de 21 años

    Human chondrocytes in tridimensional culture.

    peer reviewedCartilage was taken from the macroscopically normal part of human femoral heads immediately after orthopedic surgical operations for total prothesis consecutive to hip arthrosis. After clostridial collagenase digestion and repeated washings, chondrocytes (10(6) cells) were cultivated in a gyrotory shaker (100 rpm). Under these conditions, cells were kept in suspension and after 3 to 5 d formed a flaky aggregate which, on Day 10, became dense. These chondrocytes were morphologically differentiated: they had a round shape, were situated inside cavities, and were surrounded by a new matrix. Histochemical methods showed the presence of collagen and polysaccharides in cell cytoplasm and in intercellular matrix, and the immunofluorescence method using specific antisera (anticartilage proteoglycans and anti-type II collagen) showed that these two constituents were in intercellular matrix. The measurement of the amounts of proteoglycans (PG) released into culture medium and those present in chondrocyte aggregate (by a specific PG radioimmunoassay) showed a maximum production on Days 3 to 5 of culture, then the production decreased and stabilized (from Day 10 to the end of culture). The observed difference between the amounts of PG in aggregates after 20 d and those after 2 h of culture demonstrated that PG neosynthesis did occur during cultivation. This conclusion was supported by other results obtained by [14C]glucosamine incorporation in chondrocyte aggregates. Moreover, the aggregate fresh weight related to cell number (appreciated by DNA assay) increased significantly with culture duration.     Measuring cognitive load: mixed results from a handover simulation for medical students.

    The application of cognitive load theory to workplace-based activities such as patient handovers is hindered by the absence of a measure of the different load types. This exploratory study tests a method for measuring cognitive load during handovers.The authors developed the Cognitive Load Inventory for Handoffs (CLI4H) with items for intrinsic, extraneous, and germane load. Medical students completed the measure after participating in a simulated handover. Exploratory factor and correlation analyses were performed to collect evidence for validity.Results yielded a two-factor solution for intrinsic and germane load that explained 50 % of the variance. The extraneous load items performed poorly and were removed from the model. The score for intrinsic load correlated with the Paas Cognitive Load scale (r = 0.31, p = 0.004) and was lower for students with more prior handover training (p = 0.036). Intrinsic load did not, however, correlate with performance. Germane load did not correlate with the Paas Cognitive Load scale but did correlate as expected with performance (r = 0.30, p = 0.005) and was lower for those students with more prior handover training (p = 0.03).The CLI4H yielded mixed results with some evidence for validity of the score from the intrinsic load items. The extraneous load items performed poorly and the use of only a single item for germane load limits conclusions. The instrument requires further development and testing. Study results and limitations provide guidance to future efforts to measure cognitive load during workplace-based activities, such as handovers

    Antimicrobial consumption and resistance in adult hospital inpatients in 53 countries:results of an internet-based global point prevalence survey

    Summary: Background: The Global Point Prevalence Survey (Global-PPS) established an international network of hospitals to measure antimicrobial prescribing and resistance worldwide. We aimed to assess antimicrobial prescribing and resistance in hospital inpatients. Methods: We used a standardised surveillance method to collect detailed data about antimicrobial prescribing and resistance from hospitals worldwide, which were grouped by UN region. The internet-based survey included all inpatients (adults, children, and neonates) receiving an antimicrobial who were on the ward at 0800 h on one specific day between January and September, 2015. Hospitals were classified as primary, secondary, tertiary (including infectious diseases hospitals), and paediatric hospitals. Five main ward types were defined: medical wards, surgical wards, intensive-care units, haematology oncology wards, and medical transplantation (bone marrow or solid transplants) wards. Data recorded included patient characteristics, antimicrobials received, diagnosis, therapeutic indication according to predefined lists, and markers of prescribing quality (eg, whether a stop or review date were recorded, and whether local prescribing guidelines existed and were adhered to). We report findings for adult inpatients. Findings: The Global-PPS for 2015 included adult data from 303 hospitals in 53 countries, including eight lower-middle-income and 17 upper-middle-income countries. 86 776 inpatients were admitted to 3315 adult wards, of whom 29 891 (34·4%) received at least one antimicrobial. 41 213 antimicrobial prescriptions were issued, of which 36 792 (89·3%) were antibacterial agents for systemic use. The top three antibiotics prescribed worldwide were penicillins with β-lactamase inhibitors, third-generation cephalosporins, and fluoroquinolones. Carbapenems were most frequently prescribed in Latin America and west and central Asia. Of patients who received at least one antimicrobial, 5926 (19·8%) received a targeted antibacterial treatment for systemic use, and 1769 (5·9%) received a treatment targeting at least one multidrug-resistant organism. The frequency of health-care-associated infections was highest in Latin America (1518 [11·9%]) and east and south Asia (5363 [10·1%]). Overall, the reason for treatment was recorded in 31 694 (76·9%) of antimicrobial prescriptions, and a stop or review date in 15 778 (38·3%). Local antibiotic guidelines were missing for 7050 (19·2%) of the 36 792 antibiotic prescriptions, and guideline compliance was 77·4%. Interpretation: The Global-PPS showed that worldwide surveillance can be accomplished with voluntary participation. It provided quantifiable measures to assess and compare the quantity and quality of antibiotic prescribing and resistance in hospital patients worldwide. These data will help to improve the quality of antibiotic prescribing through education and practice changes, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries that have no tools to monitor antibiotic prescribing in hospitals.     Genetic Approaches Identify Differential Roles for α₄β₂* Nicotinic Receptors in Acute Models of Antinociception in Mice

    The effects of nicotine on the tail-flick and hot-plate tests were determined to identify nicotinic receptor subtypes responsible for spinally and supraspinally mediated nicotine analgesia in knockin mice expressing hypersensitive α4 nicotinic receptors (L9′S), in seven inbred mouse strains (C57BL/6, DBA/2, A/2, CBA/2, BALB/cByJ, C3H/HeJ, and 129/SvEv), and in two F1 hybrids (B6CBAF1 and B6D2F1). L9′S heterozygotes were ∼6-fold more sensitive to the antinociceptive effects of nicotine than the wild-type controls in the hot-plate test but not in the tail-flick assay. Large differences in the effects of nicotine were also observed with both tests for the seven mouse strains. A/J and 129 mice were 6- to 8-fold more sensitive than CBA and BALB mice. In addition, B6CBAF1 hybrid mice were even less sensitive than CBA mice. Nicotinic binding sites were measured in three spinal cord regions and the hindbrain of the inbred strains. Significant differences in cytisine-sensitive, high affinity [¹²⁵I]epibatidine binding site levels (α₂β₂* subtypes), but not in ¹²⁵I-α-bungarotoxin binding (α7* subtypes), were observed. Significant negative correlations between cytisine-sensitive [¹²⁵I]epibatidine binding and nicotine ED50 for both tests were noted. Our results indicate that α₄β₂* acetylcholine nicotinic receptors (nAChR) are important in mediating nicotine analgesia in supraspinal responses, while also showing that α₄β₂*-nAChR and at least one other nAChR subtype appear to modulate spinal actions

    This paper contextualizes, describes and taxonomically assigned cranial and dental Gomphotheriidae materials from the El Trebal 1, late Pleistocene form central Chile. Starting from metric and morphological variables fossils are included in Stegomastodon platensisStegomastodon platensis.     Lobar pneumonia caused by Ralstonia pickettii in a sixty-five-year-old Han Chinese man: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p><it>Ralstonia pickettii </it>is a gram-negative, oxidase-positive bacillus and is an emerging pathogen found in infections described in hospital settings. The cases reported in the literature mostly are nosocomial infections due to contaminated blood products, sterile water, saline, treatment fluids and venous catheters. Human infection unrelated to contaminated solutions is rare. We report a case of lobar pneumonia and pulmonary abscess caused by <it>Ralstonia pickettii </it>in an older patient.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A sixty-five-year old Han Chinese man presented having had cough, expectoration, chest pain and fever lasting for twenty days. His medical history was notable for hypertension over the previous ten years, and the habit of smoking for forty years. A thoracic computed tomography scan supported the diagnosis of right-sided lobar pneumonia. A lung biopsy was done and pathological analysis confirmed lobar pneumonia. Two lung biopsy specimens from separate sites grew <it>Ralstonia pickettii</it>. After six days, a repeat thoracic scan revealed a right-sided abscess. A thoracentesis was performed and the purulent fluid grew <it>Ralstonia pickettii</it>. The chest tube remained inserted to rinse the cavity with sterile sodium chloride. He received an antibiotic course of intravenous cefoperazone sodium-sulbactam sodium for eighteen days and imipenem-cilastatin for twelve days. A repeat chest X-ray revealed resolution of the pulmonary abscess and improvement of pneumonia. He remained afebrile and free of respiratory symptoms after treatments.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This case demonstrates a <it>Ralstonia pickettii </it>infection in the absence of an obvious nosocomial source. It is possible that such cases will become common in the future. Therefore, further studies are needed to evaluate its sensitivity to common antibiotics.</p
