    A Presheaf Interpretation of the Generalized Freyd Conjecture

    We give a generalized version of the Freyd conjecture and a way to think about a possible proof. The essential point is to describe an elementary formal reduction of the question that holds in any triangulated category.     The extent and/or intermediates of ruminal biohydrogenation (BH) of fatty acids (FA) were investigated in vitro and in situ using a raw, pre-conditioned or extruded blend of linseed and wheat bran (70:30). The duration of in vitro incubations were 2, 4, 8, 16 and 24 h, with 5 replicates. In situ studies used 3 dry ruminally fistulated Holstein cows in a 3 × 3 Latin square design, with 3 weeks adaptation to the linseed form. The diet contained 20% (DM basis) of the linseed based blend. The duration of in situ incubations were 2, 4, 8, 16, 24 and 48 h. BH was much slower in situ than in vitro, resulting in a much lower effective disappearance of C18:2 and C18:3. Moreover, the in situ technique suggested that the technological pre-treatment of linseed did not affect C18:2 and C18:3 rate of BH, whereas reduced rates were observed in vitro. After 8 h of in vitro incubation and onwards, proportions of cis-9,trans-11C18:2 were the highest with extruded linseed. The BH of FA from linseed resulted in the appearance of great proportions of trans-10+11 to trans-16C18:1 intermediates. Extrusion increased the proportions of trans-10+11C18:1 both in vitro and in situ and proportions or trans-C18:1 were higher in situ than in vitro. Compared to previous in vivo results with the same material, the in situ method provided poor estimates of BH rates and intermediates

    GreenPhylDB: A Gene Family Database for plant functional Genomics

    With the increasing number of genomes being sequenced, a major objective is to transfer accurate annotation from characterised proteins to uncharacterised sequences. Consequently, comparative genomics has become a usual and efficient strategy in functional genomics. The release of various annotated genomes of plants, such as _O. sativa_ and _A. thaliana_, has allowed setting up comprehensive lists of gene families defined by automated methods. However, like for gene sequence, manual curation of gene families is an important requirement that has to be undertaken. GreenPhylDB comprises protein sequences of 12 plant species fully sequenced that were grouped into homeomorphic families using similarity-based methods. Clusters are finally processed by phylogenetic analysis to infer orthologs and paralogs that will be particularly helpful to study genome evolution. Previously, each cluster has to be curated (i.e. properly named and classified) using different sources of information. A web interface for plant gene families’ curation was developed for that purpose. This interface, accessible on GreenPhylDB ("http://greenphyl.cirad.fr":http://greenphyl.cirad.fr), centralizes external references (e.g. InterPro, KEGG, Swiss-Prot, PIRSF, Pubmed) related to all gene members of the clusters and shows statistics and automatic analysis. We believe that this synthetic view of data available for a gene cluster, combined with basic guidelines, is an efficient way to provide reliable method for gene family annotations

    The new pensions in Kazakhstan : challenges in making the transition

    In June of 1997 Kazakhstan embarked on a dramatic reform of its pension system, replacing the inherited pay as you go regime with one based entirely on fully funded individual accounts. This paper provides projections of the effects of this reform on income replacement rates and considers some possible adjustments to the system design, including those enacted in early 2005, that could address the projected outcomes of the reform. The initial reform which did not include any minimum pension guarantee is projected to result in a significant reduction in the individual income replacement rates derived from the pension system, especially for women. When the reform was mature and the old system fully phased out, women are projected to have received pensions at level of less than 15 percent of their pre-retirement earnings. Various potential adjustments to the reform, including the recent introduction of a citizens pension or"demogrant", are found to have the capacity to significantly raise these income replacement rates. The fiscal costs of alternatives are found to vary considerably due significantly to the degree to which they would target expenditures to lower income groups. The analysis of the original reform design and possible adjustments provides some useful lessons about the design of individual account systems in transition economies.Pensions&Retirement Systems,State Owned Enterprise Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Gender and Law,Youth and Governance
