1,6-Diazabicyclo[4.4.4]tetradecane and its lnside-protonated lon: Changes in Space Groups
The crystal structures of 1,6-diazabicyclo[4.4.4]tetradecane (1) and of its inside-protonated ion (2), which were originally described in space group C2/c, should be described instead in trigonal space groups, (1) in R3c and (2) in P31c; both moieties have crystallographically imposed point symmetry D_3 rather than C_2
Incorporation of cytochrome oxidase into cardiolipin bilayers and induction of nonlamellar phases.
Cytochrome oxidase from beef heart has been lipid-substituted with beef heart cardiolipin. The lipid phase behavior and protein aggregation state of the reconstituted complexes have been studied with 31P NMR, freeze-fracture electron microscopy, and saturation-transfer ESR of the spin-labeled protein. In the absence of salt, the lipid has a lamellar arrangement, and the protein is integrated and uniformly distributed in the membrane vesicles and undergoes rapid rotational diffusion. The presence of the protein stabilizes the cardiolipin lamellar phase against salt-induced transitions to the inverted hexagonal phase. The threshold salt concentration becomes higher and the extent of conversion becomes lower with decreasing lipid:protein ratio. In high salt, lamellar-phase lipid with integrated protein coexists with hexagonal-phase lipid free of protein, and the rotational diffusion of the protein is drastically reduced as a result of the high packing density
Projected rotational velocities of WD1614+136 and WD1353+409 - implications for the rate of galactic Type Ia supernovae
The white dwarf stars WD1614+136 and WD1353+409 are not sufficiently massive
to have formed through single star evolution. However, observations to date
have not yet found any evidence for binarity. It has therefore been suggested
that these stars are the result of a merger. In this paper we place an upper
limit of approximately 50kms on the projected rotational velocities of both
stars. This suggests that, if these stars are the results of a merger,
efficient angular momentum loss with accompanying mass loss must have occurred.
If the same process occurs following the merging of more massive white dwarf
stars, the predicted rate of Type Ia supernovae due to merging white dwarfs may
have been greatly over-estimated. Further observations to determine binarity in
WD1614+136 and WD1353+409 are therefore encouraged.Comment: 3 pages. 1 figur
Publications of the JPL Solar Thermal Power Systems Project, 1976 to 1983
The bibliographical listings in this publication are documentation products associated with the solar thermal power system project carried out by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory from 1976 to 1983. Documents listed are categorized as conference and journal papers, JPL external reports, JPL internal reports, or contractor reports. Alphabetical listings by title were used in the bibliography itself to facilitate location of the document by subject. Two indexes are included for ease of reference: one, an author index; the other, a topical index
Farm Size and Land Use Changes in Vietnam Following Land Reforms
Over the last decade the Vietnamese government has instigated land reforms that recognise the household as the basic unit of production and allocate land use rights to households. Under the 1993 Land Law these rights can be transferred, exchanged, leased, inherited, and mortgaged. This Land Law provided the foundation for the development of a market for land use rights. During 2001, 400 farm households were surveyed in four provinces in Vietnam. Along with production and consumption data, evidence was sought of land accumulation and consolidation, land use changes, and attitudes to land reform issues. Analysis of the data shows that there is an active market for land use rights, but the level of activity varies considerably between provinces. Some individual households have acquired a large percentage of their land through buying or renting activities, as distinct from land that has been allocated or inherited. A more active market appears to be associated with opportunities for land use changes which lead to more profitable production activities. Lack of available land and in some cases labour, inadequate credit access, and reluctance to sell land use rights are identified as constraints to the land use right market, rather than transaction costs and the limit on land holdings.agricultural policy, land reform, land market, Vietnam, Agricultural and Food Policy, Land Economics/Use,
AGROINDUSTRY FOR RURAL AND SMALL FARMER DEVELOPMENT: ISSUES AND LESSONS FROM INDIA
This article examines the priority given to agroindustries in India in the context of their role in rural and small farmer development. The features and constraints of agroindustry are examined to assess their real and potential contribution and challenges faced. Institutional and organizational models that have been tried or proposed in India are evaluated from the point of view of performance and contribution to rural and small farmer development. The article then draws policy and managerial implicationsAgribusiness, Community/Rural/Urban Development,
A Radial Velocity Study of CTCV J1300-3052
We present time-resolved spectroscopy of the eclipsing, short period
cataclysmic variable CTCV J1300-3052. Using absorption features from the
secondary star, we determine the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the
secondary star to be K2 = 378 \pm 6 km/s, and its projected rotational velocity
to be v sin i = 125 \pm 7 km/s. Using these parameters and Monte Carlo
techniques, we obtain masses of M1 = 0.79 \pm 0.05 MSun for the white dwarf
primary and M2 = 0.198 \pm 0.029 MSun for the M-type secondary star. These
parameters are found to be in excellent agreement with previous mass
determinations found via photometric fitting techniques, supporting the
accuracy and validity of photometric mass determinations in short period CVs.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (24th January 2012). 10 pages, 9
