Fully double-logarithm-resummed cross sections
We calculate the complete double logarithmic contribution to cross sections
for semi-inclusive hadron production in the modified minimal-subtraction scheme
by applying dimensional regularization to the double logarithm approximation.
The full double logarithmic contribution to the coefficient functions for
inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation is obtained in
this scheme for the first time. Our result agrees with all fixed order results
in the literature, which extend to next-next-to-leading order.Comment: To appear in Nuclear Physics
Total Progeny in a Subcritical Branching Process with two Types of Immigration
2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 60J80, 60F05We consider subcritical Bellman-Harris branching processes with two types of immigration - one appears whenever the process hits zero state and an other one is in accordance of an independent renewal process. Extremes of geometric variables with applications to branching processes
We obtain limit theorems for the row extrema of a triangular array of
zero-modified geometric random variables. Some of this is used to obtain limit
theorems for the maximum family size within a generation of a simple branching

Soft radiation in heavy-particle pair production: all-order colour structure and two-loop anomalous dimension
We present a factorization formula for the production of pairs of heavy
coloured particles in hadronic collisions at the production threshold, which
forms the basis for the resummation of soft gluons and Coulomb gluons. We
construct a basis in colour space that diagonalizes the soft function appearing
in the factorization formula to all orders in perturbation theory. This extends
recent results on the structure of soft anomalous dimensions and allows us to
determine an analytic expression for the two-loop soft anomalous dimension at

Synthesis of Improved Catalytic Materials for High-Temperature Water-gas Shift Reaction
In this investigation, we report the preparation and characterization of Co-, Cu- and Mn-substituted iron oxide catalytic materials supported on activated carbon. Co-precipitation method and low temperature treatment were used for their synthesis. The influence of chemical composition, stoichiometry, particle size and dispersity on their catalytic activity was studied. Samples were characterized in all stages of their co-precipitation, heating and spend samples after catalytic tests. The obtained results from room and low temperature Mössbauer spectroscopy were combined with analysis of powder X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD). They revealed the preparation of nano-sized iron oxide materials supported on activated carbon. Relaxation phenomena were registered also for the supported phases. The catalytic performance in the water-gas shift reaction was studied. The activity order was as follows: Cu0.5Fe2.5O4 > Co0.5Fe2.5O4 > Mn0.5Fe2.5O4. Catalytic tests demonstrated very promising results and potential application of studied samples due to their cost-effective composition
NNLO corrections to top-pair production at hadron colliders: the all-fermionic scattering channels
This is a second paper in our ongoing calculation of the
next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD correction to the total inclusive
top-pair production cross-section at hadron colliders. In this paper we
calculate the reaction which was not considered
in our previous work on due to its phenomenologically
negligible size. We also calculate all remaining fermion-pair-initiated
partonic channels and that contribute to top-pair
production starting from NNLO. The contributions of these reactions to the
total cross-section for top-pair production at the Tevatron and LHC are small,
at the permil level. The most interesting feature of these reactions is their
characteristic logarithmic rise in the high energy limit. We compute the
constant term in the leading power behavior in this limit, and achieve
precision that is an order of magnitude better than the precision of a recent
theoretical prediction for this constant. All four partonic reactions computed
in this paper are included in our numerical program Top++. The calculation of
the NNLO corrections to the two remaining partonic reactions,

Microbiological characterization of Streptococcus pneumoniae and non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae isolates as primary causes of acute otitis media in Bulgarian children before the introduction of conjugate vaccines
BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccines were introduced in our national immunisation program in April 2010. The aims of this retrospective, laboratory-based study were to determine the serotypes and antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae and H. influenzae isolates from middle ear fluid (MEF) collected before the introduction of immunization. METHODS: S. pneumoniae (n = 128) and H. influenzae (n = 40) strains isolated from MEF of children with AOM between 1994 and 2011 were studied. MICs were determined by a microdilution assay. Serotyping of S. pneumoniae was done by Quellung method and PCR capsular typing was used for H. influenzae. Macrolide resistance genes were detected by PCR for erythromycin resistant S. pneumoniae (ERSP). DNA sequencing of ftsI gene was performed for ampicillin nonsusceptible H. influenzae. RESULTS: The most common serotypes found among children with pneumococcal AOM were 19 F (20.3%), 6B (15.6%), and 19A (10.9%). The potential coverage rates by the PCV7, PCV10 and PCV13 of children aged < 5 years were 63.6%, 66.4% and 85.5%, respectively. Reduced susceptibility to oral penicillin was seen in 68.1%; resistance to erythromycin was 46.9%. We found erm(B) gene in 56.7% of the ERSP, mef(E) gene in 25%; 15% harbored both genes erm(B) + mef(E) and 3.3% had mutations of L4 ribosomal protein. Of the 40 H. influenzae isolates 97.5% were nontypeable. Nonsusceptibility to ampicillin occurred in 25%. Ampicillin resistance groups were: β-lactamase-positive ampicillin resistant (BLPAR) strains (10%), β-lactamase-negative ampicillin resistant (BLNAR) strains (12.5%) and β-lactamase-positive amoxicillin-clavulanate resistant (BLPACR) strains (2.5%). Among BLNAR and BLPACR most of the isolates (5/6) belonged to group II, defined by the Asn526Lys substitution. CONCLUSIONS: The levels of antibiotic resistance among S. pneumoniae and H. influenzae causing severe AOM in children are high in our settings. The existence of multidrug-resistant S. pneumoniae serotype 19A is of particular concern. The rate of BLNAR and BLPACR strains among H. influenzae isolates was 15%
Biomarkers in respiratory diseases
The scientific evidence concerning prosthodontic care for the shortened dental arch (SDA) is sparse. This randomized multicenter study aimed to compare two common treatment options: removable partial dental prostheses (RPDPs) for molar replacement vs. no replacement (SDA). One of the hypotheses was that the follow-up treatment differs between patients with RPDPs and patients with SDAs during the 5-year follow-up period. Two hundred and fifteen patients with complete molar loss in one jaw were included in the study. Molars were either replaced by RPDPs or not replaced according to the SDA concept. A mean number of 4.2 (RPDP) and 2.8 (SDA) treatments for biological or technical reasons occurred during the 5-year observation time per patient. Concerning the biological aspect, no significant differences between the groups could be shown, whereas treatment arising from technical reasons was significantly more frequent for the RPDP group. When the severity of treatment was analyzed, a change over time was evident. When, at baseline, only follow-up treatment with minimal effort is required, over time there is a continuous increase to moderate and extensive effort observed for both groups ( Controlled-trials.com number ISRCTN97265367). </jats:p
