    Boundary Controllability and Observability of a Viscoelastic String

    In this paper we consider an integrodifferential system, which governs the vibration of a viscoelastic one-dimensional object. We assume that we can act on the system at the boundary and we prove that it is possible to control both the position and the velocity at every point of the body and at a certain time T T , large enough. We shall prove this result using moment theory and we shall prove that the solution of this problem leads to identify a Riesz sequence which solves controllability and observability. So, the result as presented here are constructive and can lead to simple numerical algorithms

    Maxillary sinus floor elevation is generally accepted as a regenerative procedure to facilitate dental implants placement in the posterior atrophic maxilla. Although the sinus lift procedure is relatively safe, some potential problems could be occur. The most prevalent intraoperative complication is perforation of sinus membrane, which can lead to graft infection and early failure. The Aim of this work. Is to present a new technique to repair large perforation of sinus membrane. This case report. Is focused on a 10 mm perforation of sinus membrane occurred during preparation of the sinus window. The obliteration of the perforation was obtained by means of suturing sinus membrane with a resorbable material to the bone directly lateral to the osteotomy site. Sinus augmentation procedure could complete and the insertion of a graft was permitted

    A major pathway by which growth factors, such as platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), regulate cell proliferation is via the receptor tyrosine kinase/Ras/niitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling cascade. The output of this pathway is subjected to tight regulation of both positive and negative regulators. One such regulator is p62(dok), the prototype of a newly identified family of adaptor proteins. We recently provided evidence, through the use of p62(dok)-deficient cells, that p62(dok) acts as a negative regulator of growth factor-induced cell proliferation and the Ras/MAPK pathway. We show here that reintroduction of p62(dok) into P62(dok-/-) cells can suppress the increased cell proliferation and prolonged MAPK activity seen in these cells, and that plasma membrane recruitment of p62(dok) is essential for its function. We also show that the PDGF-triggered plasma membrane translocation of p62(dok) requires activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3-kinase) and binding of its pleckstrin homology (PH) domain to 3 ' -phosphorylated phosphomositides. Furthermore, we demonstrate that p62(dok) can exert its negative effect on the PDGFR/MAPK pathway independently of its ability to associate with RasGAP and Nck. We conclude that p62(dok) functions as a negative regulator of the PDGFR/Ras/MAPK signaling pathway through a mechanism involving P13-kinase-dependent recruitment of p62(dok) to the plasma membrane

    Ag nanoparticle-based inkjet printed planar transmission lines for RF and microwave applications: considerations on ink composition, nanoparticle size distribution and sintering time

    Sintering of Ag Nanoparticle (NP) - based inkjet printed tracks is a crucial process for the next-generation digitally printed electronics. In particular, while the digital printing, as additive technology, is now well settled for what concerns either DC or signal applications both on rigid and on flexible substrates, this technology has not been demonstrated yet in the RF or microwave field, and a few works appear considering vacuum-evaporated films, screen-printed pastes or inkjet printed inks. We studied the effects of both ink composition and thermal profile on the resulting electrical properties, performing real-time resistance acquisition (DC) and post-annealing microwave measurements. We tested ink compositions featuring both different NP size distributions and different phase compositions, including a pure solvent/salt/metal one and a solvent/salt/metal/polymer one, resulting in a peculiar mass distribution and heat diffusion. The composition strongly affects the onset of electrical percolation and the final resistivity; on the contrary, the heating rate can either have an effect on electrical properties or not depending on the composition. The microwave characterization of microstrip lines printed on alumina substrates, performed up to 26.5 GHz, yield attenuations that are comparable with the best results obtained so far with the same technolog

    The worldwide costs of marine protected areas

    Declines in marine harvests, wildlife, and habitats have prompted calls at both the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the 2003 World Parks Congress for the establishment of a global system of marine protected areas (MPAs). MPAs that restrict fishing and other human activities conserve habitats and populations and, by exporting biomass, may sustain or increase yields of nearby fisheries. Here we provide an estimate of the costs of a global MPA network, based on a survey of the running costs of 83 MPAs worldwide. Annual running costs per unit area spanned six orders of magnitude, and were higher in MPAs that were smaller, closer to coasts, and in high-cost, developed countries. Models extrapolating these findings suggest that a global MPA network meeting the World Parks Congress target of conserving 20–30% of the world’s seas might cost between 5billionand5 billion and 19 billion annually to run and would probably create around one million jobs. Although substantial, gross network costs are less than current government expenditures on harmful subsidies to industrial fisheries. They also ignore potential private gains from improved fisheries and tourism and are dwarfed by likely social gains from increasing the sustainability of fisheries and securing vital ecosystem services

    One challenge in biology is signal transduction monitoring in a physiological context. Intravital imaging techniques are revolutionizing our understanding of tumor and host cell behaviors in the tumor environment. However, these deep tissue imaging techniques have not yet been adopted to investigate the second messenger calcium (Ca2+). In the present study, we established conditions that allow the in vivo detection of Ca2+ signaling in three-dimensional tumor masses in mouse models. By combining intravital imaging and a skinfold chamber technique, we determined the ability of photodynamic cancer therapy to induce an increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentrations and, consequently, an increase in cell death in a p53-dependent pathway

    Socio-Economic and Clinical Factors as Predictors of Disease Evolution and Acute Events in COPD Patients

    BACKGROUND: Socio-economic, cultural and environmental factors are becoming increasingly important determinants of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We conducted a study to investigate socio-demographic, lifestyle and clinical factors, and to assess their role as predictors of acute events (mortality or hospitalization for respiratory causes) in a group of COPD patients. METHODS: Subjects were recruited among outpatients who were undertaking respiratory function tests at the Pneumology Unit of the Sant'Orsola-Malpighi Hospital, Bologna. Patients were classified according to the GOLD Guidelines. RESULTS: 229 patients with COPD were included in the study, 44 with Mild, 68 Moderate, 52 Severe and 65 Very Severe COPD (GOLD stage). Significant differences among COPD stage, in terms of smoking status and fragility index, were detected. COPD stage significantly affected the values of all clinical tests (spirometry and ABG analysis). Kaplan-Meier estimates showed a significant difference between survival curves by COPD stage with lower event-free probability in very severe COPD stage. Significant risk factors for acute events were: underweight (HR = 4.08; 95% CI 1.01-16.54), having two or more comorbidities (HR = 4.71; 95% CI 2.52-8.83), belonging to moderate (HR = 3.50; 95% CI 1.01-12.18) or very severe COPD stage (HR = 8.23; 95% CI 2.35-28.85). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that fragility is associated with COPD stage and that comorbidities and the low body mass index are predictors of mortality or hospitalization. Besides spirometric analyses, FeNO measure and comorbidities, body mass index could also be considered in the management and monitoring of COPD patients

    Performance of a Tungsten-Cerium Fluoride Sampling Calorimeter in High-Energy Electron Beam Tests

    A prototype for a sampling calorimeter made out of cerium fluoride crystals interleaved with tungsten plates, and read out by wavelength-shifting fibres, has been exposed to beams of electrons with energies between 20 and 150 GeV, produced by the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron accelerator complex. The performance of the prototype is presented and compared to that of a Geant4 simulation of the apparatus.
