The identification of gamma ray induced EAS
Some of the penetrating particles in gamma-induced EAS from Cygnus X-3 observed by a single layer of flash-bulbs under 880 g cm/2 concrete, may be punched through photons rather than muons. An analysis of the shielded flash-tube response detected from EAS is presented. The penetration of the electro-magnetic component through 20 cm of Pb is observed at core distances approx. 10 m
Loop-mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) Assays for the Speciesspecific Detection of Eimeria that Infect Chickens
Average features of the muon component of EAS or = 10(17) eV
Three 10 sq m liquid scintillators were situated at approximately 0 m, 150 m and 250 m from the center of the Haverah Park array. The detectors were shielded by lead/barytes giving muon detection thresholds of 317 MeV, 431 MeV and 488 MeV respectively. During part of the operational period the 431 MeV threshold was lowered to 313 MeV for comparison purposes. For risetime measurement fast phototubes were used and the 10% to 70% amplitude time interval was parameterized by T sub 70. A muon lateral density distribution of the form rho mu (R theta) = krho(500)0.94 1/R(1 + R/490)-eta has been fitted to the data for 120 m R 600 m and 0.27 (500) 2.55. The shower size parameter (500) is the water Cerenkov response at 500 m from the core of the extensive air showers (EAS) and is relatable to the primary energy. The results show general consistency
Determining the Spectral Signature of Spatial Coherent Structures
We applied to an open flow a proper orthogonal decomposition (pod) technique,
on 2D snapshots of the instantaneous velocity field, to reveal the spatial
coherent structures responsible of the self-sustained oscillations observed in
the spectral distribution of time series. We applied the technique to 2D planes
out of 3D direct numerical simulations on an open cavity flow. The process can
easily be implemented on usual personal computers, and might bring deep
insights on the relation between spatial events and temporal signature in (both
numerical or experimental) open flows.Comment: 4 page
Relativistic magnetospheric electrons: Lower ionospheric conductivity and long-term atmospheric variability
Long term observations of relativistic electrons in the earth's outer magnetosphere show a strong solar cycle dependence with a prominent intensity maximum during the approach to solar minimum. This population therefore closely corresponds to the presence of high speed solar wind streams emanating from solar coronal holes. Using a numerical code, the precipitating electron energy deposition in the earth's upper and middle atmosphere were calculated. Observed events (typically persisting several days) would have maximum effect in the 40 to 60 km altitude range with peak energy depositions greater than 110 keV/cu cm-s. It is suggested that this electron population could play an important long term role in modulating lower D region ionization and middle atmospheric ozone chemistry. Methods are described of observing middle atmospheric and lower ionospheric effects of the electrons including balloon, riometer, and space-based ozone sensor systems. A particularly promising approach may involve the monitoring of global Schumann resonance modes which are sensitive to global changes in the properties of the earth-ionosphere cavity. Present work indicates that Schumann resonance properties are moderately correlated with the flux of precipitating relativistic electrons thus offering the possibility of continuously monitoring this aspect of magnetosphere-atmosphere coupling

Probing the Upper Scorpius mass function in the planetary-mass regime
We present the results of a deep ZYJ near-infrared survey of 13.5 square
degrees in the Upper Scorpius (USco) OB association. We photometrically
selected ~100 cluster member candidates with masses in the range 30-5 Jupiters,
according to state-of-the-art evolutionary models. We identified 67 ZYJ
candidates as bona-fide members, based on complementary photometry and
astrometry. We also extracted five candidates detected with VISTA at YJ-only.
One is excluded using deep optical z-band imaging, while two are likely
non-members, and three remain as potential members. We conclude that the USco
mass function is more likely decreasing in the planetary-mass regime (although
a flat mass function cannot yet be discarded), consistent with surveys in other
regions.Comment: Accepted by MNRAS, 10 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables (2 electronic

Density of states and zero Landau level probed through capacitance of graphene
We report capacitors in which a finite electronic compressibility of graphene
dominates the electrostatics, resulting in pronounced changes in capacitance as
a function of magnetic field and carrier concentration. The capacitance
measurements have allowed us to accurately map the density of states D, and
compare it against theoretical predictions. Landau oscillations in D are robust
and zero Landau level (LL) can easily be seen at room temperature in moderate
fields. The broadening of LLs is strongly affected by charge inhomogeneity that
leads to zero LL being broader than other levels
Demonstration of Robust Quantum Gate Tomography via Randomized Benchmarking
Typical quantum gate tomography protocols struggle with a self-consistency
problem: the gate operation cannot be reconstructed without knowledge of the
initial state and final measurement, but such knowledge cannot be obtained
without well-characterized gates. A recently proposed technique, known as
randomized benchmarking tomography (RBT), sidesteps this self-consistency
problem by designing experiments to be insensitive to preparation and
measurement imperfections. We implement this proposal in a superconducting
qubit system, using a number of experimental improvements including
implementing each of the elements of the Clifford group in single `atomic'
pulses and custom control hardware to enable large overhead protocols. We show
a robust reconstruction of several single-qubit quantum gates, including a
unitary outside the Clifford group. We demonstrate that RBT yields physical
gate reconstructions that are consistent with fidelities obtained by randomized
benchmarking
