    The regeneration of interior Alaska’s commercial forest lands is mandated by Alaska’s Forest Resources and Practices Act (1979). This act requires that regeneration be established adequate to ensure a sustained yield on forested lands from which the timber has been harvested. Post-logging regeneration efforts now are aimed at exposing mineral soil for the natural seeding of white spruce. Soil exposure has been accomplished by blade scarifying with a crawler tractor which provides large seed sites or by using a Bracke-type patch scarifier which produces small seed sites of about 2 ft2. Arlidge (1967) reports that larger seedbeds have greater regeneration success than smaller ones. Some researchers have found that the regeneration of the larger plots may be too successful, requiring weeding and precommercial thinning to bring stocking to satisfactory levels (Zasada and Grigal 1978).     Status of magnetic suspension technology

    The reasons for the continuing interest in the Magnetic Suspension and Balance System (MSBS) are highlighted. Typical problems that can arise because of model-support interference in a transonic wind tunnel are shown to illustrate the need for MSBS. The two magnetic suspension systems in operation at Langley are the only ones active in the U.S. One of these systems is the 13 inch MSBS which was borrowed from the Air Force Arnold Engineering Development Center. The other system is the 6 inch MSBS which was developed by MIT Aerophysics Laboratory with NASA and DOD funding. Each of these systems is combined with a subsonic wind tunnel. Ongoing research in both of these systems is covered. Last year, Madison Magnetics, Inc., completed a contractual design and cost study utilizing some advance concepts for a large MSBS which would be compatible with an 8 foot transonic wind tunnel and the highlights of the study are presented. Sverdrup Technology, Inc., recently performed a study under contract for Langley on the potential usefulness to the aerospace industry of a proposed large MSBS combined with a suitable transonic wind tunnel. The results of that study are discussed. Langley has partially funded the MSBS work at the University of Southampton for about 6 years under a grant arrangement and the major results are summarized

    A formula-driven scalable benchmark model for ABM, applied to FLAME GPU

    Agent Based Modelling (ABM) systems have become a popular technique for describing complex and dynamic systems. ABM is the simulation of intelligent agents and how these agents communicate with each other within the model. The growing number of agent-based applications in the simulation and AI fields led to an increase in the number of studies that focused on evaluating modelling capabilities of these applications. Observing system performance and how applications behave during increases in population size is the main factor for benchmarking in most of these studies. System scalability is not the only issue that may affect the overall performance, but there are some issues that need to be dealt with to create a standard benchmark model that meets all ABM criteria. This paper presents a new benchmark model and benchmarks the performance characteristics of the FLAME GPU simulator as an example of a parallel framework for ABM. The aim of this model is to provide parameters to easily measure the following elements: system scalability, system homogeneity, and the ability to handle increases in the level of agent communications and model complexity. Results show that FLAME GPU demonstrates near linear scalability when increasing population size and when reducing homogeneity. The benchmark also shows a negative correlation between increasing the communication complexity between agents and execution time. The results create a baseline for improving the performance of FLAME GPU and allow the simulator to be contrasted with other multi-agent simulators

    TASS Mark IV Photometric Survey of the Northern Sky

    The Amateur Sky Survey (TASS) is a loose confederation of amateur and professional astronomers. We describe the design and construction of our Mark IV systems, a set of wide-field telescopes with CCD cameras which take simultaneous images in the VV and ICI_C passbands. We explain our observational procedures and the pipeline which processes and reduces the images into lists of stellar positions and magnitudes. We have compiled a large database of measurements for stars in the northern celestial hemisphere with VV-band magnitudes in the range 7 < V < 13. This paper describes data taken over the four-year period starting November, 2001. One of our results is a catalog of repeated measurements on the Johnson-Cousins system for over 4.3 million stars.Comment: Accepted for publication in December, 2006, issue of PASP. 44 pages including 20 figures.     PI-FLAME: A parallel immune system simulator using the FLAME graphic processing unit environment

    Agent-based models (ABMs) are increasingly being used to study population dynamics in complex systems, such as the human immune system. Previously, Folcik et al. (The basic immune simulator: an agent-based model to study the interactions between innate and adaptive immunity. Theor Biol Med Model 2007; 4: 39) developed a Basic Immune Simulator (BIS) and implemented it using the Recursive Porous Agent Simulation Toolkit (RePast) ABM simulation framework. However, frameworks such as RePast are designed to execute serially on central processing units and therefore cannot efficiently handle large model sizes. In this paper, we report on our implementation of the BIS using FLAME GPU, a parallel computing ABM simulator designed to execute on graphics processing units. To benchmark our implementation, we simulate the response of the immune system to a viral infection of generic tissue cells. We compared our results with those obtained from the original RePast implementation for statistical accuracy. We observe that our implementation has a 13× performance advantage over the original RePast implementation

    A Standardised Benchmark for Assessing the Performance of Fixed Radius Near Neighbours

    Many agent based models require agents to have an awareness of their local peers. The handling of these fixed radius near neighbours (FRNNs) is often a limiting factor of performance. However without a standardised metric to assess the handling of FRNNs, contributions to the field lack the rigorous appraisal necessary to expose their relative benefits. This paper presents a standardised specification of a multi agent based benchmark model. The benchmark model provides a means for the objective assessment of FRNNs performance, through the comparison of implementations. Results collected from implementations of the benchmark model under three agent based modelling frameworks show the 64-bit floating point performance of each framework to scale linearly with agent population, in contrast the GPU accelerated framework’s 32- bit floating point performance only became linear after maximal device utilisation around 100,000 agent
