Turbo Decoding and Detection for Wireless Applications
A historical perspective of turbo coding and turbo transceivers inspired by the generic turbo principles is provided, as it evolved from Shannon’s visionary predictions. More specifically, we commence by discussing the turbo principles, which have been shown to be capable of performing close to Shannon’s capacity limit. We continue by reviewing the classic maximum a posteriori probability decoder. These discussions are followed by studying the effect of a range of system parameters in a systematic fashion, in order to gauge their performance ramifications. In the second part of this treatise, we focus our attention on the family of iterative receivers designed for wireless communication systems, which were partly inspired by the invention of turbo codes. More specifically, the family of iteratively detected joint coding and modulation schemes, turbo equalization, concatenated spacetime and channel coding arrangements, as well as multi-user detection and three-stage multimedia systems are highlighted

Cannabis and the lung
The use of cannabis is embedded within many societies, mostly used by the young and widely perceived to be safe. Increasing concern regarding the potential for cannabis to cause mental health effects has dominated cannabis research and the potential adverse respiratory effects have received relatively little attention. Studies on cannabis are challenging and subject to confounding by concomitant use of tobacco and other social factors, and while many of the studies referred to in this review are beset by the difficulties inherent in undertaking epidemiological research of the effects of cannabis, there is an emerging concern among many chest physicians who would suggest that habitual smoking of cannabis may contribute to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumothorax and respiratory infections, including tuberculosis. Special attention should be given to the risk of lung cancer, particularly as biological plausibility may precede epidemiology
Permanents, Pfaffian orientations, and even directed circuits
Given a 0-1 square matrix A, when can some of the 1's be changed to -1's in
such a way that the permanent of A equals the determinant of the modified
matrix? When does a real square matrix have the property that every real matrix
with the same sign pattern (that is, the corresponding entries either have the
same sign or are both zero) is nonsingular? When is a hypergraph with n
vertices and n hyperedges minimally nonbipartite? When does a bipartite graph
have a "Pfaffian orientation"? Given a digraph, does it have no directed
circuit of even length? Given a digraph, does it have a subdivision with no
even directed circuit?
It is known that all of the above problems are equivalent. We prove a
structural characterization of the feasible instances, which implies a
polynomial-time algorithm to solve all of the above problems. The structural
characterization says, roughly speaking, that a bipartite graph has a Pfaffian
orientation if and only if it can be obtained by piecing together (in a
specified way) planar bipartite graphs and one sporadic nonplanar bipartite
graph.Comment: 47 pages, published versio
Collective dipole excitations in sodium clusters
Some properties of small and medium sodium clusters are described within the
RPA approach using a projected spherical single particle basis. The oscillator
strengths calculated with a Schiff-like dipole transition operator and folded
with Lorentzian functions are used to calculate the photoabsorbtion cross
section spectra. The results are further employed to establish the dependence
of the plasmon frequency on the number of cluster components. Static electric
polarizabilities of the clusters excited in a RPA dipole state are also
calculated.
Comparison of our results with the corresponding experimental data show an
overall good agreement.Comment: 23 pages, 5 figure
