Improving Design Characteristic to Estimate Load for Future Rock Climbing Studies
Rock climbing is an increasingly popular physical activity with indoor competition climbing accepted for inclusion at the summer 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The International Olympic Committee consensus statement recommends the accurate monitoring of training load to reduce injury risk in athletes (Soligard, et al., 2016). Differences in acute/chronic training loads have been found to be predictive of injury occurrence (Gabbett, 2016). In published climbing literature to date, differences in injury terminology, data collection procedures, calculation of exposure and operational measures of performance used by authorship teams impedes comparison. At present, there is no consensus on design characteristics for use in epidemiological cohort studies in rock climbing. The aim of this article is to report a critical appraisal of methodologies used to estimate load and recommends an amendment to the IRCRA comparative grading scale to include British adjectival grade and design characteristics for future studies
Detecting the Gravitational Redshift of Cluster Gas
We examine the gravitational redshift of radiation emitted from within the
potential of a cluster. Spectral lines from the intracluster medium (ICM) are
redshifted in proportion to the emission-weighted mean potential along the line
of sight, amounting to approximately 50 km/s at a radius of 100 kpc/h, for a
cluster dispersion of 1200 km/s. We show that the relative redshifts of
different ionization states of metals in the ICM provide a unique probe of the
three-dimensional matter distribution. An examination of the reported peculiar
velocities of cD galaxies in well studied Abell clusters reveals they are
typically redshifted by an average of km/s. This can be achieved by
gravity with the addition of a steep central potential associated with the cD
galaxy. Note that in general gravitational redshifts cause a small overestimate
of the recessional velocities of clusters by an average of 20 km/s.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted to the Astrophysical Journal Letter

Binding branched and linear DNA structures: from isolated clusters to fully bonded gels
The proper design of DNA sequences allows for the formation of well defined
supramolecular units with controlled interactions via a consecution of
self-assembling processes. Here, we benefit from the controlled DNA
self-assembly to experimentally realize particles with well defined valence,
namely tetravalent nanostars (A) and bivalent chains (B). We specifically focus
on the case in which A particles can only bind to B particles, via
appropriately designed sticky-end sequences. Hence AA and BB bonds are not
allowed. Such a binary mixture system reproduces with DNA-based particles the
physics of poly-functional condensation, with an exquisite control over the
bonding process, tuned by the ratio, r, between B and A units and by the
temperature, T. We report dynamic light scattering experiments in a window of
Ts ranging from 10{\deg}C to 55{\deg}C and an interval of r around the
percolation transition to quantify the decay of the density correlation for the
different cases. At low T, when all possible bonds are formed, the system
behaves as a fully bonded network, as a percolating gel and as a cluster fluid

The First Detailed Abundances for M giants in Baade's Window from Infrared Spectroscopy
We report the first abundance analysis of 14 M giant stars in the Galactic
bulge, based on R=25,000 infrared spectroscopy (1.5-1.8um) using NIRSPEC at the
Keck II telescope. Because some of the bulge M giants reach high luminosities
and have very late spectral type, it has been suggested that they are the
progeny of only the most metal rich bulge stars, or possibly members of a
younger bulge population. We find the iron abundance and composition of the M
giants are similar to those of the K giants that have abundances determined
from optical high resolution spectroscopy: =-0.190 +/- 0.020 with a
1-sigma dispersion of 0.08 +/- 0.015. Comparing our bulge M giants to a control
sample of local disk M giants in the Solar vicinity, we find the bulge stars
are enhanced in alpha elements at the level of +0.3 dex relative to the Solar
composition stars, consistent with other studies of bulge globular clusters and
field stars. This small sample shows no dependence of spectral type on
metallicity, nor is there any indication that the M giants are the evolved
members of a subset of the bulge population endowed with special
characteristics such as relative youth or high metallicity. We also find low
12C/13C < 10, confirming the prsence of extra-mixing processes during the red

Risk factors for human brucellosis in northern Tanzania
Little is known about the epidemiology of human brucellosis in sub-Saharan Africa. This hampers prevention and control efforts at the individual and population levels. To evaluate risk factors for brucellosis in northern Tanzania, we conducted a study of patients presenting with fever to two hospitals in Moshi, Tanzania. Serum taken at enrollment and at 4–6 week follow-up was tested by Brucella microagglutination test. Among participants with a clinically compatible illness, confirmed brucellosis cases were defined as having a ≥ 4-fold rise in agglutination titer between paired sera or a blood culture positive for Brucella spp., and probable brucellosis cases were defined as having a single reciprocal titer ≥ 160. Controls had reciprocal titers < 20 in paired sera. We collected demographic and clinical information and administered a risk factor questionnaire. Of 562 participants in the analysis, 50 (8.9%) had confirmed or probable brucellosis. Multivariable analysis showed that risk factors for brucellosis included assisting goat or sheep births (Odds ratio [OR] 5.9, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.4, 24.6) and having contact with cattle (OR 1.2, 95% CI 1.0, 1.4). Consuming boiled or pasteurized dairy products was protective against brucellosis (OR 0.12, 95% CI 0.02, 0.93). No participants received a clinical diagnosis of brucellosis from their healthcare providers. The under-recognition of brucellosis by healthcare workers could be addressed with clinician education and better access to brucellosis diagnostic tests. Interventions focused on protecting livestock keepers, especially those who assist goat or sheep births, are needed
Risk factors for human acute leptospirosis in northern Tanzania
Introduction:
Leptospirosis is a major cause of febrile illness in Africa but little is known about risk factors for human infection. We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate risk factors for acute leptospirosis and Leptospira seropositivity among patients with fever attending referral hospitals in northern Tanzania.
Methods:
We enrolled patients with fever from two referral hospitals in Moshi, Tanzania, 2012–2014, and performed Leptospira microscopic agglutination testing on acute and convalescent serum. Cases of acute leptospirosis were participants with a four-fold rise in antibody titers, or a single reciprocal titer ≥800. Seropositive participants required a single titer ≥100, and controls had titers <100 in both acute and convalescent samples. We administered a questionnaire to assess risk behaviors over the preceding 30 days. We created cumulative scales of exposure to livestock urine, rodents, and surface water, and calculated odds ratios (OR) for individual behaviors and for cumulative exposure variables.
Results:
We identified 24 acute cases, 252 seropositive participants, and 592 controls. Rice farming (OR 14.6), cleaning cattle waste (OR 4.3), feeding cattle (OR 3.9), farm work (OR 3.3), and an increasing cattle urine exposure score (OR 1.2 per point) were associated with acute leptospirosis.
Conclusions:
In our population, exposure to cattle and rice farming were risk factors for acute leptospirosis. Although further data is needed, these results suggest that cattle may be an important source of human leptospirosis. Further investigation is needed to explore the potential for control of livestock Leptospira infection to reduce human disease
Galaxy Orbits for Galaxy Clusters in Sloan Digital Sky Survey and 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey
We present the results of a study for galaxy orbits in galaxy clusters using
a spectroscopic sample of galaxies in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and 2dF
Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS). We have determined the member galaxies of
Abell clusters covered by these surveys using the galaxies' redshift and
positional data. We have selected 10 clusters using three criteria: the number
of member galaxies is greater than or equal to 40, the spatial coverage is
complete, and X-ray mass profile is available in the literature. We derive the
radial profile of the galaxy number density and velocity dispersion using all,
early-type, and late-type galaxies for each cluster. We have investigated the
galaxy orbits for our sample clusters with constant and variable velocity
anisotropies over the clustercentric distance using Jeans equation. Using all
member galaxies, the galaxy orbits are found to be isotropic within the
uncertainty for most of sample clusters, although it is difficult to conclude
strongly for some clusters due the large errors and the variation as a function
of the clustercentric distance in the calculated velocity anisotropies. We
investigated the orbital difference between early-type and late-type galaxies
