Brownian motion in a non-homogeneous force field and photonic force microscope
The Photonic Force Microscope (PFM) is an opto-mechanical technique based on
an optical trap that can be assumed to probe forces in microscopic systems.
This technique has been used to measure forces in the range of pico- and
femto-Newton, assessing the mechanical properties of biomolecules as well as of
other microscopic systems. For a correct use of the PFM, the force field to
measure has to be invariable (homogeneous) on the scale of the Brownian motion
of the trapped probe. This condition implicates that the force field must be
conservative, excluding the possibility of a rotational component. However,
there are cases where these assumptions are not fulfilled Here, we show how to
improve the PFM technique in order to be able to deal with these cases. We
introduce the theory of this enhanced PFM and we propose a concrete analysis
workflow to reconstruct the force field from the experimental time-series of
the probe position. Furthermore, we experimentally verify some particularly
important cases, namely the case of a conservative or rotational force-field
The buyer margins of firms' exports
We use highly disaggregated firm-level export data from Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Uruguay over the period 2005-2008 to provide a precise characterization of firms' export margins, across products, destination countries, and crucially customers. We show that a firm's number of buyers and the distribution of sales across them systematically vary with the characteristics of its destination markets. While most firms serve only very few buyers abroad, the number of buyers and the skewness of sales across them increases with the size and the accessibility of destinations. We develop a simple model of selection with heterogeneous buyers and sellers consistent with these findings in which tougher competition induces a better alignment between consumers' ideal variants and firms' core competencies. This generates an additional channel through which tougher competition leads to higher productivity and higher welfare and hints at an additional source of gains from trade as long as freer trade fosters competition
Local measurement of error field using naturally rotating tearing mode dynamics in EXTRAP T2R
An error field (EF) detection technique using the amplitude modulation of a
naturally rotating tearing mode (TM) is developed and validated in the EXTRAP
T2R reversed field pinch. The technique was used to identify intrinsic EFs of
, where and are the poloidal and toroidal mode numbers.
The effect of the EF and of a resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) on the TM,
in particular on amplitude modulation, is modeled with a first-order solution
of the Modified Rutherford Equation. In the experiment, the TM amplitude is
measured as a function of the toroidal angle as the TM rotates rapidly in the
presence of an unknown EF and a known, deliberately applied RMP. The RMP
amplitude is fixed while the toroidal phase is varied from one discharge to the
other, completing a full toroidal scan. Using three such scans with different
RMP amplitudes, the EF amplitude and phase are inferred from the phases at
which the TM amplitude maximizes. The estimated EF amplitude is consistent with
other estimates (e.g. based on the best EF-cancelling RMP, resulting in the
fastest TM rotation). A passive variant of this technique is also presented,
where no RMPs are applied, and the EF phase is deduced.Comment: Submitted for publication in Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusio
The Small-Mass Limit for Langevin Dynamics with Unbounded Coefficients and positive friction
A class of Langevin stochastic differential equations is shown to converge in
the small-mass limit under very weak assumptions on the coefficients defining
the equation. The convergence result is applied to physically realizable
examples where the coefficients defining the Langevin equation grow unboundedly
either at a boundary, such as a wall, and/or at the point at infinity.Comment: 11 pages, no figure
SMEs in Argentina: Who are the Exporters?
There exists a growing body of literature which looks at export decisions made by firms. Most studies focus on developed countries and do not explore whether different behavioral patterns prevail over the firm size distribution. This paper aims at filling this gap in the literature by analyzing the export behavior of a statistically representative sample of 192 Small and Medium-Size Enterprises (SMEs) in a developing country, Argentina, over the period 1996-1998. We find that the level of employment, sourcing from abroad, investment in product improvement and average productivity are associated with a higher probability of exporting. Training activities for employees are important to export outside of MERCOSUR.SME, Exports, Argentina
Broadband multi-wavelength campaign on PKS 2005-489
The spectral energy distribution (SED) of high-frequency peaked BL Lac
objects (HBL) is characterized by two peaks: one in the UV-X-ray and one in the
GeV-TeV regime. An interesting object for analyzing these broadband
characteristics is PKS 2005-489, which in 2004 showed the softest TeV spectrum
ever measured. In 2009, a multi-wavelength campaign has been conducted with,
for the first time, simultaneous observations by H.E.S.S. (TeV), Fermi/LAT
(GeV), RXTE (keV), Swift (keV, UV, optical) and ATOM (optical) to cover the two
peaks of the SED. During this campaign PKS 2005-489 underwent a high state in
all wavebands which gives the opportunity to study in detail the emission
processes of a high state of this interesting HBL.Comment: 2009 Fermi Symposium; eConf Proceedings C09112
PINK1 homozygous W437X mutation in a patient with apparent dominant transmission of parkinsonism.
We analyzed the PINK1 gene in 58 patients with early-onset Parkinsonism and detected the homozygous mutation W437X in 1 patient. The clinical phenotype was characterized by early onset (22 years of age), good re- sponse to levodopa, early fluctuations and dyskinesias, and psychiatric symptoms. The mother, heterozygote for W437X mutation, was affected by Parkinson’s disease and 3 further relatives were reported affected, according to an autosomal dominant transmission
Formation, compression and surface melting of colloidal clusters by active particles
We demonstrate with experiments and numerical simulations that the structure and dynamics of a suspension of passive particles is strongly altered by adding a very small (<1%) number of active particles. With increasing passive particle density, we observe first the formation of dynamic clusters comprised of passive particles being surrounded by active particles, then the merging and compression of these clusters, and eventually the local melting of crystalline regions by enclosed active particles. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015
Error Field Assessment from Driven Rotation of Stable External Kinks at EXTRAP-T2R Reversed Field Pinch
A new non-disruptive error field (EF) assessment technique not restricted to
low density and thus low beta was demonstrated at the EXTRAP-T2R reversed field
pinch. Stable and marginally stable external kink modes of toroidal mode number
n=10 and n=8, respectively, were generated, and their rotation sustained, by
means of rotating magnetic perturbations of the same n. Due to finite EFs, and
in spite of the applied perturbations rotating uniformly and having constant
amplitude, the kink modes were observed to rotate non-uniformly and be
modulated in amplitude. This behavior was used to precisely infer the amplitude
and approximately estimate the toroidal phase of the EF. A subsequent scan
permitted to optimize the toroidal phase. The technique was tested against
deliberately applied as well as intrinsic error fields of n=8 and 10.
Corrections equal and opposite to the estimated error fields were applied. The
efficacy of the error compensation was indicated by the increased discharge
duration and more uniform mode rotation in response to a uniformly rotating
perturbation. The results are in good agreement with theory, and the extension
to lower n, to tearing modes and to tokamaks, including ITER, is discussed.Comment: 21 pages, 16 figure
