The cathode is simple to construct, requires modest heating power, has high current emission capability and is quite rugged. Construction details will be given and cathode performance data presented.     In the resin transfer moulding process, fabrics are very often used as reinforcement. These fabrics consist of fibre bundles. In this context, both the permeability of the macroscopic fabric and the permeability of the fibre bundle are the key parameters to accurately predict the impregnation of the fabrics, the impregnation time and resulting void content. The fibre bundle permeability can be either predicted theoretically or experimentally. Whereas the theoretical determination lacks on accuracy as the realistic packing of the fibres in the bundles is not integrated in the models. In this work, we present an experimental setup to measure the longitudinal and transversal permeability of fibre bundles. The results are compared to model prediction

    The application of non-invasive imaging technologies using X-radiation (diagnostic radioentomology, ‘DR') is demonstrated for the study of amber-entombed social bees. Here, we examine the external and internal morphology of an Early Miocene (Burdigalian) stingless bee (Apinae: Meliponini) from the Dominican Republic using non-destructive X-ray microtomography analysis. The study permits the accurate reconstruction of features otherwise obscured or impossible to visualize without destroying the sample and allows diagnosis of the specimen as a new species, Proplebeia adbita Greco and Enge

    Spin-ladders with spin gaps: A description of a class of cuprates

    We investigate the magnetic properties of the Cu-O planes in stoichiometric Srn1_{n-1}Cun+1_{n+1}O2n_{2n} (n=3,5,7,...) which consist of CuO double chains periodically intergrown within the CuO2_2 planes. The double chains break up the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic planes into Heisenberg spin ladders with nr=12(n1)n_r=\frac{1}{2}(n-1) rungs and nl=12(n+1)n_l=\frac{1}{2}(n+1) legs and described by the usual antiferromagnetic coupling J inside each ladder and a weak and frustrated interladder coupling J^\prime. The resulting lattice is a new two-dimensional trellis lattice. We first examine the spin excitation spectra of isolated quasi one dimensional Heisenberg ladders which exhibit a gapless spectra when nrn_r is even and nln_l is odd ( corresponding to n=5,9,...) and a gapped spectra when nrn_r is odd and nln_l is even (corresponding to n=3,7,...). We use the bond operator representation of quantum S=12S=\frac{1}{2} spins in a mean field treatment with self-energy corrections and obtain a spin gap of 12J\approx \frac{1}{2} J for the simplest single rung ladder (n=3), in agreement with numerical estimates.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures upon request, REVTEX, ETH-TH/93-3

    The Nearby Supernova Factory

    The Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory) is an ambitious project to find and study in detail approximately 300 nearby Type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) at redshifts 0.03<z<0.08. This program will provide an exceptional data set of well-studied SNe in the nearby smooth Hubble flow that can be used as calibration for the current and future programs designed to use SNe to measure the cosmological parameters. The first key ingredient for this program is a reliable supply of Hubble-flow SNe systematically discovered in unprecedented numbers using the same techniques as those used in distant SNe searches. In 2002, 35 SNe were found using our test-bed pipeline for automated SN search and discovery. The pipeline uses images from the asteroid search conducted by the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking group at JPL. Improvements in our subtraction techniques and analysis have allowed us to increase our effective SN discovery rate to ~12 SNe/month in 2003.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures to be published in New Astronomy Review
