When is the Haar measure a Pietsch measure for nonlinear mappings?

We show that, as in the linear case, the normalized Haar measure on a compact topological group GG is a Pietsch measure for nonlinear summing mappings on closed translation invariant subspaces of C(G)C(G). This answers a question posed to the authors by J. Diestel. We also show that our result applies to several well-studied classes of nonlinear summing mappings. In the final section some problems are proposed

Laurolactam as a stabilizer against the thermo-oxidative degradation of poly(ether-ester)

    Get PDF
In this study we examined the influence of laurolactam on the thermo-oxidative degradation of a copolymer of poly(butylene terephthalate) and polybutylene glycol and of di(ethyleneglycol) dibenzoate, used as model compound. The degradation was followed by measurement of the oxygen uptake, FTIR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy and measurement of the intrinsic viscosity changes during degradation. A stabilizing effect of laurolactam on the thermo-oxidative degradation could be observed, as an induction time was defined in which hydroperoxides were not formed and molecular weight was kept constant. After this period the oxygen uptake, hydroperoxide formation and polymer conversion increased more slowly

University Student's perceptions of hazing : a gender approach

The initiation rituals that freshmen are subjected to in universities have been characterized quite differently, although the most frequent view is that it is a rough experience for those coming to higher education for the first time. Gender has emerged as a differentiating variable of how students experience this practice. In this study, our interest is to find out the perceptions of university students over the events that take place during the entry to higher education through a comparative gender analysis. The sample included247 students of both genders. Data were collected by means of the scale 'Evaluation of Bullying Situations in Higher Education Hazing', which consists of 15 items and three factors: 'positive relationship with hazing', ‘negative relationship with hazing’ and ‘social dimension’. Findings indicate that, in the overall scale, there are significant differences between genders, with boys expressing a stronger agreement with the practice. In the analysis by dimension, this fact is reinforced, since in the 'positive relationship with hazing', boys exhibit significantly higher results than girls. In the distribution of variables in the two-dimensional space (CatPCA), we witness that, despite agreeing with hazing practices, boys display a very heterogeneous behavior, while girls more homogeneously disagree with them.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Colorimetric Assessment of BCR-ABL1 Transcripts in Clinical Samples Via Gold Nanoprobes

Gold nanoparticles functionalized with thiolated oligonucleotides (Au-nanoprobes) have been used in a range of applications for the detection of bioanalytes of interest, from ions to proteins and DNA targets. These detection strategies are based on the unique optical properties of gold nanoparticles, in particular, the intense color that is subject to modulation by modification of the medium dieletric. Au-nanoprobes have been applied for the detection and characterization of specific DNA sequences of interest, namely pathogens and disease biomarkers. Nevertheless, despite its relevance, only a few reports exist on the detection of RNA targets. Among these strategies, the colorimetric detection of DNA has been proven to work for several different targets in controlled samples but demonstration in real clinical bioanalysis has been elusive. Here, we used a colorimetric method based on Au-nanoprobes for the direct detection of the e14a2 BCR-ABL fusion transcript in myeloid leukemia patient samples without the need for retro-transcription. Au-nanoprobes directly assessed total RNA from 38 clinical samples, and results were validated against reverse transcription-nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nested PCR) and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). The colorimetric Au-nanoprobe assay is a simple yet reliable strategy to scrutinize myeloid leukemia patients at diagnosis and evaluate progression, with obvious advantages in terms of time and cost, particularly in low- to medium-income countries where molecular screening is not routinely feasible. As correlações obtidas entre os três apresentaram-se estatisticamente significativas, considerando nível de significância de 1% (respetivamente, p=0.02; p=0.00 e p=0.00).ABSTRACT - This research focuses on how students from a Portuguese higher education institution perceive hazing practices and bullying situations in hazing practices. Data were collected through the scale “Avaliação das Situações de Bullying nas Praxes do Ensino Superior” (Evaluation of Situations of Bullying in Hazing Practices in Higher Education), organized in three dimensions: Positive Relation with the Hazing Practices; Negative Relation with the Hazing Practices and Social Dimension (Matos, Jesus, Simões & Nave, 2010). 247 students of both sexes, aged 18 to 43 years old and from different grade levels, courses and departments have taken part in this study. The results confirm significant differences in Positive Relation with the Hazing Practices between males and females (p=0.001< α=0.05) and among age groups (“20 years old or less” and “more than 20 years old”; p=0.024<α=0.05). Furthermore, they allow us to observe significant differences between the students’ grade levels (1st, 2nd or 3rd year) taking into account the Positive Relation with the Hazing Practices (p=0.04<α=0.05) and the Social Dimension (p=0.017<α=0.05). Besides, significant differences have been noted between the departments where students belong regarding Positive Relation with the Hazing Practices (p=0.02<α=0.05) and Negative Relation with the Hazing Practices (p=0.02<α=0.05). The correlations between the three subscales (Positive Relation with the Hazing Practices, Negative Relation with the Hazing Practices and Social Dimension) are statistically significant, taking in consideration the significance levels of 1% (respectively p=0.02; p=.00 and p=0.00)

A investigação apresenta dados controversos.
