Mentoring: Adding Value to Organizational Culture
Given that leadership is value-based and relationship-permeated, one asks how leaders can transfer personal and organizational value to employees. One answer to this is through mentoring. Mentoring young or inexperienced workers is an investment in the future of business, the school system, organizations, etc. Understanding this idea is difficult because current mentoring research demonstrates that mentoring is more convoluted than was once thought. This article will make an effort to untangle some of this research and then suggest a “common sense” and “practical” definition of “mentoring.” This is a definition that can be used in large and small businesses, in churches, schools, and by community organizations. Trace element content and magnetic properties of commercial HOPG samples studied by ion beam microscopy and SQUID magnetometry
In this study, the impurity concentration and magnetic response of nine
highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples with different grades and
from different providers were determined using ion beam microscopy and SQUID
magnetometry. Apart from sideface contaminations in the as-received state, bulk
contamination of the samples in most cases consists of disk-shaped micron-sized
particles made of Ti and V with an additional Fe contamination around the grain
perimeter. The saturation magnetization typically increases with Fe
concentration, however, there is no simple correlation between Fe content and
magnetic moment. The saturation magnetization of one, respectively six, out of
nine samples clearly exceeds the maximum contribution from pure Fe or Fe3C. For
most samples the temperature dependence of the remanence decreases linearly
with T - a dependence found previously for defect-induced magnetism (DIM) in
HOPG. We conclude that apart from magnetic impurities, additional contribution
to the ferromagnetic magnetization exists in pristine HOPG in agreement with
previous studies. A comparative study between the results of ion beam
microscopy and the commonly used EDX analysis shows clearly that EDX is not a
reliable method for quantitative trace elemental analysis in graphite,
clarifying weaknesses and discrepancies in the element concentrations given in

Granular superconductivity at room temperature in bulk highly oriented pyrolytic graphite samples
We have studied the magnetic response of two bulk highly oriented pyrolytic
graphite (HOPG) samples with different internal microstructure. For the sample
with well defined interfaces, parallel to the graphene layers, the temperature
and magnetic field hysteresis are similar to those found recently in
water-treated graphite powders. The observed behavior indicates the existence
of granular superconductivity above room temperature in agreement with previous
reports in other graphite samples. The granular superconductivity behavior is
observed only for fields normal to the embedded interfaces, whereas no relevant
hysteresis in temperature or field is observed for fields applied parallel to
them. Increasing the temperature above K changes irreversibly the
hysteretic response of the sample.Comment: 36 pages with 13 figure
Effect of the sample geometry on the second magnetization peak in single crystalline BaKBiO thick film
Magnetization hysteresis loop measurements performed on a single
crystalline BaKBiO superconducting thick film reveal
pronounced sample geometry dependence of the "second magnetization peak" (SMP),
i.e. a maximum in the width of occurring at the field .
In particular, it is found that the SMP vanishes decreasing the film dimension.
We argue that the observed sample geometry dependence of the SMP cannot be
accounted for by models which assume a vortex pinning enhancement as the origin
of the SMP. Our results can be understood considering the thermomagnetic
instability effect and/or non-uniform current distribution at

The role of hydrogen in room-temperature ferromagnetism at graphite surfaces
We present a x-ray dichroism study of graphite surfaces that addresses the
origin and magnitude of ferromagnetism in metal-free carbon. We find that, in
addition to carbon states, also hydrogen-mediated electronic states
exhibit a net spin polarization with significant magnetic remanence at room
temperature. The observed magnetism is restricted to the top 10 nm of
the irradiated sample where the actual magnetization reaches emu/g
at room temperature. We prove that the ferromagnetism found in metal-free
untreated graphite is intrinsic and has a similar origin as the one found in

Proton-induced magnetic order in carbon: SQUID measurements
In this work we have studied systematically the changes in the magnetic
behavior of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) samples after proton
irradiation in the MeV energy range. Superconducting quantum interferometer
device (SQUID) results obtained from samples with thousands of localized spots
of micrometer size as well on samples irradiated with a broad beam confirm
previously reported results. Both, the para- and ferromagnetic contributions
depend strongly on the irradiation details. The results indicate that the
magnetic moment at saturation of spots of micrometer size is of the order of

Gene Expression and Immunohistochemistry in Adipose Tissue of HIV Type 1-Infected Patients with Nucleoside Analogue Reverse-Transcriptase Inhibitor-Associated Lipoatrophy
BackgroundLong-term use of both zidovudine (AZT) and stavudine (d4T) is associated with lipoatrophy, but it occurs possibly through different mechanisms MethodsSurgical biopsy specimens of subcutaneous adipose tissue were obtained from 18 human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-infected lipoatrophic patients (the LA+ group) who were treated with either zidovudine (the AZT+LA+ group; n=10) or stavudine (the d4T+LA+ group; n=8) and from 10 nonlipoatrophic HIV-1-infected patients (the LA− group) who received antiretroviral therapy. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) copy numbers, gene expression, and immunohistochemistry data were analyzed ResultsmtDNA copy numbers were significantly reduced in the LA+ group, compared with the LA− group, and in the d4T+LA+ group, compared with the AZT+LA+ group. The ratio of mtDNA-encoded cytochrome COX3 to nuclear DNA-encoded COX4 expression was significantly lower in the LA+ group than in the LA− group. Compared with the LA− group, the LA+ group had significantly lower expression of genes involved in adipogenesis (SREBP1cand CEBPB) lipid (fatty acid synthase), and glucose (GLUT4) metabolism. Expression of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis (PGC1B) apoptosis (FAS) inflammation (IL1B) oxidative stress (PCNA and SOD1) and lamin B was significantly higher in the LA+ group than in the LA− group. The d4T+LA+ group had significantly lower expression of genes involved in mitochondrial biogenesis (POLG1) energy metabolism (the COX3/COX4 ratio), adipogenesis (SREBP1c and CEBPA) perilipin, and hexokinase than did the AZT+LA+ group. There were 7-fold more macrophages in adipose tissue specimens obtained from patients in the LA+ group, compared with the LA− group ConclusionsLipoatrophy is characterized by mtDNA depletion, inflammation, and signs of apoptosis.
