New concept in brazing metallic honeycomb panels
Aluminum oxide coating provides surface which will not be wetted by brazing alloy and which stops metallic diffusion welding of tooling materials to part being produced. This method eliminates loss of tooling materials and parts from braze wetting and allows fall-apart disassembly of tooling after brazing
Analysis of pseudocolor transformations of ERTS-1 images of Southern California area
The author has identified the following significant results. Representative faults and lineaments, natural features on the Mojave Desert, and cultural features of the southern California area were studied on ERTS-1 images. The relative appearances of the features were compared on a band 4 and 5 subtraction image, its pseudocolor transformation, and pseudocolor images of bands 4, 5, and 7. Selected features were also evaluated in a test given students at the University of California, Los Angeles. Observations and the test revealed no significant improvement in the ability to detect and locate faults and lineaments on the pseudocolor transformations. With the exception of dry lake surfaces, no enhancement of the features studied was observed on the bands 4 and 5 subtraction images. Geologic and geographic features characterized by minor tonal differences on relatively flat surfaces were enhanced on some of the pseudocolor images
How should we supervise qualitative projects?
There is a ‘shortfall in numbers of highly skilled qualitative researchers’ says the Economic and Social Research Council (2004). What is psychology doing about it? The Society’s revised syllabus (BPS, 2002) states that students should be able to collect and analyse qualitative (non-numerical) data. The Quality Assessment Agency (QAA, 2002) also specifies that psychology should cover qualitative methods. Therefore, in time, psychology graduates should have the expertise the ESRC needs
Microscopic dynamics of thin hard rods
Based on the collision rules for hard needles we derive a hydrodynamic
equation that determines the coupled translational and rotational dynamics of a
tagged thin rod in an ensemble of identical rods. Specifically, based on a
Pseudo-Liouville operator for binary collisions between rods, the Mori-Zwanzig
projection formalism is used to derive a continued fraction representation for
the correlation function of the tagged particle's density, specifying its
position and orientation. Truncation of the continued fraction gives rise to a
generalised Enskog equation, which can be compared to the phenomenological
Perrin equation for anisotropic diffusion. Only for sufficiently large density
do we observe anisotropic diffusion, as indicated by an anisotropic mean square
displacement, growing linearly with time. For lower densities, the Perrin
equation is shown to be an insufficient hydrodynamic description for hard
needles interacting via binary collisions. We compare our results to
simulations and find excellent quantitative agreement for low densities and

Force on a neutral atom near conducting microstructures
We derive the non-retarded energy shift of a neutral atom for two different
geometries. For an atom close to a cylindrical wire we find an integral
representation for the energy shift, give asymptotic expressions, and
interpolate numerically. For an atom close to a semi-infinite halfplane we
determine the exact Green's function of the Laplace equation and use it derive
the exact energy shift for an arbitrary position of the atom. These results can
be used to estimate the energy shift of an atom close to etched microstructures
that protrude from substrates.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
Why and when the Minkowski's stress tensor can be used in the problem of Casimir force acting on bodies embedded in media
It is shown that the criticism by Raabe and Welsch of the
Dzyaloshinskii-Lifshitz-Pitaevskii theory of the van der Waals-Casimir forces
inside a medium is based on misunderstandings. It is explained why and at which
conditions one can use the ''Minkowski-like '' stress tensor for calculations
of the forces. The reason, why approach of Raabe and Welsch is incorrect, is

Mode Bifurcation and Fold Points of Complex Dispersion Curves for the Metamaterial Goubau Line
In this paper the complex dispersion curves of the four lowest-order
transverse magnetic modes of a dielectric Goubau line () are
compared with those of a dispersive metamaterial Goubau line. The vastly
different dispersion curve structure for the metamaterial Goubau line is
characterized by unusual features such as mode bifurcation, complex fold
points, both proper and improper complex modes, and merging of complex and real
modes
Fault tectonics and earthquake hazards in parts of southern California
The author has identified the following significant results. Four previously unknown faults were discovered in basement terrane of the Peninsular Ranges. These have been named the San Ysidro Creek fault, Thing Valley fault, Canyon City fault, and Warren Canyon fault. In addition fault gouge and breccia were recognized along the San Diego River fault. Study of features on Skylab imagery and review of geologic and seismic data suggest that the risk of a damaging earthquake is greater along the northwestern portion of the Elsinore fault than along the southeastern portion. Physiographic indicators of active faulting along the Garlock fault identifiable in Skylab imagery include scarps, linear ridges, shutter ridges, faceted ridges, linear valleys, undrained depressions and offset drainage. The following previously unrecognized fault segments are postulated for the Salton Trough Area: (1) An extension of a previously known fault in the San Andreas fault set located southeast of the Salton Sea; (2) An extension of the active San Jacinto fault zone along a tonal change in cultivated fields across Mexicali Valley ( the tonal change may represent different soil conditions along opposite sides of a fault). For the Skylab and LANDSAT images studied, pseudocolor transformations offer no advantages over the original images in the recognition of faults in Skylab and LANDSAT images. Alluvial deposits of different ages, a marble unit and iron oxide gossans of the Mojave Mining District are more readily differentiated on images prepared from ratios of individual bands of the S-192 multispectral scanner data. The San Andreas fault was also made more distinct in the 8/2 and 9/2 band ratios by enhancement of vegetation differences on opposite sides of the fault. Preliminary analysis indicates a significant earth resources potential for the discrimination of soil and rock types, including mineral alteration zones. This application should be actively pursued
On an exact solution of the Thomas-Fermi equation for a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate with dipole-dipole interactions
We derive an exact solution to the Thomas-Fermi equation for a Bose-Einstein
condensate which has dipole-dipole interactions as well as the usual s-wave
contact interaction, in a harmonic trap. Remarkably, despite the non-local
anisotropic nature of the dipolar interaction the solution is an inverted
parabola, as in the pure s-wave case, but with a different aspect ratio.
