    The equilibrium approach to exchange rates: theory and tests.

    We characterize the equilibrium exchange rate in a general equilibrium economy without imposing strong restrictions on the output processes, preferences, or commodity market imperfections. The nomial exchange rate is determined by differences in initial wealths - the currencies of richer countries tend to be overvalued, by PPP standards - and by differences of marginal indirect utilities of total nominal spending. Changes in the exchange rate mirror differences in growth rates of real spending weighted by relative risk-aversion (which can be time-varying and can differ across countries), and, in the case of non-homothetic utility functions, differences in inflation rates computed from marginal spending weights. Thus, standard regression or cointegration tests of PPP suffer from missing-variables biases and ignore variations in risk aversions across countries and over time. We also present cointegration test of the homothecy/ CRRA version of the model. When nominal spending is given an independent role (next to prices) in the short-term dynamics, both PPP and the CRRA model become acceptable.Equilibrium; Theory; Trade;

    The exchange rate and purchasing power parity: extending the theory and tests.

    This paper analyzes the exchange rate in a ``no-arbitrage' or ``real business cycle' equilibrium model and provides empirical evidence for this model vis-a-vis PPP. Our contribution is to show, based on a generalization of the equilibrium model of exchange rates, that (i) the test equation linking the exchange rate to fundamentals should allow for international heterogeneity in time preferences or risk attitudes, as well as noise---that is, the model should not be tested as an exact relation; (ii) empirical work should use levels of variables rather than first differences; (iii) tests on the existence of long-run relations should be complemented by tests on the signs of the coefficients; (iv) the specification of the regression should offer demonstrated advantages over alternatives, and the significance tests should not rely on asymptotic distributions; and (v) the tests should steer clear of countries that have imposed, for most of the period, capital restrictions or exchange controls, thus violating the integrated-markets assumption of the model.     Weak radiative hyperon decays, Hara's theorem and the diquark

    Weak radiative hyperon decays are discussed in the diquark-level approach. It is pointed out that in the general diquark formalism one may reproduce the experimentally suggested pattern of asymmetries, while maintaining Hara's theorem in the SU(3) limit.     Metabolic Characterization of the Common Marmoset (Callithrix jacchus)

    High-resolution metabolomics has created opportunity to integrate nutrition and metabolism into genetic studies to improve understanding of the diverse radiation of primate species. At present, however, there is very little information to help guide experimental design for study of wild populations. In a previous non-targeted metabolomics study of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), Rhesus macaques, humans, and four non-primate mammalian species, we found that essential amino acids (AA) and other central metabolites had interspecies variation similar to intraspecies variation while non-essential AA, environmental chemicals and catabolic waste products had greater interspecies variation. The present study was designed to test whether 55 plasma metabolites, including both nutritionally essential and non-essential metabolites and catabolic products, differ in concentration in common marmosets and humans. Significant differences were present for more than half of the metabolites analyzed and included AA, vitamins and central lipid metabolites, as well as for catabolic products of AA, nucleotides, energy metabolism and heme. Three environmental chemicals were present at low nanomolar concentrations but did not differ between species. Sex and age differences in marmosets were present for AA and nucleotide metabolism and warrant additional study. Overall, the results suggest that quantitative, targeted metabolomics can provide a useful complement to non-targeted metabolomics for studies of diet and environment interactions in primate evolution.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (grant AG038746

    Two-body Cabibbo-suppressed Decays of Charmed Baryons into Vector Mesons and into Photons

    The heavy quark effective theory and the factorization approximation are used to treat the Cabibbo-suppressed decays of charmed baryons to vector mesons, ΛCpρ0,pω\Lambda_C\rightarrow p{\rho^0}, p\omega, ΞC+,0Σ+,0ϕ,Σ+,0ρ0,Σ+,0ω\Xi_C^{+,0}\rightarrow\Sigma^{+,0}\phi, \Sigma^{+,0}{\rho^0}, \Sigma^{+,0}\omega and ΞC0Λϕ,Λρ,Λω\Xi_C^{0}\rightarrow\Lambda\phi, \Lambda\rho, \Lambda\omega. The input from two recent experimental results on ΛC\Lambda_C decays allows the estimation of the branching ratios for these modes, which turn out to be between 10410^{-4} and 10310^{-3}. The long distance contribution of these transitions via vector meson dominance to the radiative weak processes ΛCpγ\Lambda_C\rightarrow p\gamma, ΞCΣγ\Xi_C\rightarrow\Sigma\gamma and ΞC0Λγ\Xi_C^0\rightarrow\Lambda\gamma leads to quite small branching ratios, 10610910^{-6}-10^{-9}; the larger value holds if a sum rule between the coupling constants of the vector mesons is broken.Comment: 11 pages, latex, no figure

    Analysis of Two-Body Decays of Charmed Baryons Using the Quark-Diagram Scheme

    We give a general formulation of the quark-diagram scheme for the nonleptonic weak decays of baryons. We apply it to all the decays of the antitriplet and sextet charmed baryons and express their decay amplitudes in terms of the quark-diagram amplitudes. We have also given parametrizations for the effects of final-state interactions. For SU(3) violation effects, we only parametrize those in the horizontal WW-loop quark diagrams whose contributions are solely due to SU(3)-violation effects. In the absence of all these effects, there are many relations among various decay modes. Some of the relations are valid even in the presence of final-state interactions when each decay amplitude in the relation contains only a single phase shift. All these relations provide useful frameworks to compare with future experiments and to find out the effects of final-state interactions and SU(3) symmetry violations.Comment: 28 pages, 20 Tables in landscape form, 4 figures.     Formation of CO2 on a carbonaceous surface: a quantum chemical study

    The formation of CO2 in the gas phase and on a polyaromatic hydrocarbon surface (coronene) via three possible pathways is investigated with density functional theory. Calculations show that the coronene surface catalyses the formation of CO2 on model grain surfaces. The addition of O-3 to CO is activated by 2530 K in the gas phase. This barrier is lowered by 253 K for the Eley-Rideal mechanism and 952 K for the hot-atom mechanism on the surface of coronene. Alternative pathways for the formation of CO2 are the addition of O-3 to the HCO radical, followed by dissociation of the HCO2 intermediate. The O + HCO addition is barrierless in the gas phase and on the surface and is more than sufficiently exothermic to subsequently cleave the H-C bond. The third mechanism, OH + CO addition followed by H removal from the energized HOCO intermediate, has a gas-phase exit barrier that is 1160 K lower than the entrance barrier. On the coronene surface, however, both barriers are almost equal. Because the HOCO intermediate can also be stabilized by energy dissipation to the surface, it is anticipated that for the surface reaction the adsorbed HOCO could be a long-lived intermediate. In this case, the stabilized HOCO intermediate could react, in a barrierless manner, with a hydrogen atom to form H-2 + CO2, HCO2H, or H2O + CO

    Dynamics of coherently pumped lasers with linearly polarized pump and generated fields

    The influence of light polarization on the dynamics of an optically pumped single-mode laser with a homogeneously broadened four-level medium is theoretically investigated in detail. Pump and laser fields with either parallel or crossed linear polarizations are considered, as are typical in far-infrared-laser experiments. Numerical simulations reveal dramatically different dynamic behaviors for these two polarization configurations. The analysis of the model equations allows us to find the physical origin of both behaviors. In particular, the crossed-polarization configuration is shown to be effective in decoupling the pump and laser fields, thus allowing for the appearance of Lorenz-type dynamics

    Plasma Metabolomics in Human Pulmonary Tuberculosis Disease: A Pilot Study

    We aimed to characterize metabolites during tuberculosis (TB) disease and identify new pathophysiologic pathways involved in infection as well as biomarkers of TB onset, progression and resolution. Such data may inform development of new anti-tuberculosis drugs. Plasma samples from adults with newly diagnosed pulmonary TB disease and their matched, asymptomatic, sputum culture-negative household contacts were analyzed using liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-MS) to identify metabolites. Statistical and bioinformatics methods were used to select accurate mass/charge (m/z) ions that were significantly different between the two groups at a false discovery rate (FDR) of q<0.05. Two-way hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) was used to identify clusters of ions contributing to separation of cases and controls, and metabolomics databases were used to match these ions to known metabolites. Identity of specific D-series resolvins, glutamate and Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb)-derived trehalose-6-mycolate was confirmed using LC-MS/MS analysis. Over 23,000 metabolites were detected in untargeted metabolomic analysis and 61 metabolites were significantly different between the two groups. HCA revealed 8 metabolite clusters containing metabolites largely upregulated in patients with TB disease, including anti-TB drugs, glutamate, choline derivatives, Mycobacterium tuberculosis-derived cell wall glycolipids (trehalose-6-mycolate and phosphatidylinositol) and pro-resolving lipid mediators of inflammation, known to stimulate resolution, efferocytosis and microbial killing. The resolvins were confirmed to be RvD1, aspirin-triggered RvD1, and RvD2. This study shows that high-resolution metabolomic analysis can differentiate patients with active TB disease from their asymptomatic household contacts. Specific metabolites upregulated in the plasma of patients with active TB disease, including Mtb-derived glycolipids and resolvins, have potential as biomarkers and may reveal pathways involved in TB disease pathogenesis and resolution
