Modeling human learning involved in car driving
In this paper, car driving is considered at the level of human tracking and maneuvering in the context of other traffic. A model analysis revealed the most salient features determining driving performance and safety. Learning car driving is modelled based on a system theoretical approach and based on a neural network approach. The aim of this research is to assess the relative merit of both approaches to describe human learning behavior in car driving specifically and in operating dynamic systems in general
Final report on the farmer's aid in plant disease diagnoses
This report is the final report on the FAD project. The FAD project was initiated in september 1985 to test the expert system shell Babylon by developing a prototype crop disease diagnosis system in it. A short overview of the history of the project and the main problems encountered is given in chapter 1. Chapter 2 describes the result of an attempt to integrate JSD with modelling techniques like generalisation and aggregation and chapter 3 concentrates on the method we used to elicit phytopathological knowledge from specialists. Chapter 4 gives the result of knowledge acquisition for the 10 wheat diseases most commonly occurring in the Netherlands. The user interface is described briefly in chapter 5 and chapter 6 gives an overview of the additions to the implementation we made to the version of FAD reported in our second report. Chapter 7, finally, summarises the conclusions of the project and gives recommendations for follow-up projects
Ambulatory estimation of foot movement during gait using inertial sensors
Human body movement analysis is commonly done in so-called 'gait laboratories’. In these laboratories, body movement is masured using optically based systems like Vicon, Optrotrak. The major drawback of these systems is the restriction to a laboratory environment. Therefore research is required to find ways for performing these measurements outside the gait laboratory. The estimation of foot movement is important, since balance is controlled by foot placement during gait. This study investigates whether it is possible to estimate foot movement, specifically foot placement, during gait under ambulatory conditions. The measurement system consisted of an orthopaedic sandal with two six degrees-of-freedom force/moment sensors beneath the heel and the forefoot. It should be noted that the force sensors were merely used for gait phase detection. The position and orientation of heel and forefoot were estimated using the accelerometers and gyroscopes of two miniature inertial sensors, rigidly attached to the force sensors [1,3]. In addition, errors in the walking direction were compensated for by using knowledge about the average walking direction.
The proposed ambulatory measurement system was similar to the one used in a previous study [3]. In that study the position and orientation determination was restarted each step, while this study allows estimation of position and orientation during several steps including a change of direction. However, the accuracy should be investigated in more detail by an evaluation study. Moreover, the measurement system can be simplified by using a different gait phase detection system, for example by a gyroscope based detection system [2]. Lambda Calculus for Engineers
In pure functional programming it is awkward to use a stateful sub-computation in a predominantly stateless computation. The problem is that the state of the subcomputation has to be passed around using ugly plumbing. Classical examples of the plumbing problem are: providing a supply of fresh names, and providing a supply of random numbers. We propose to use (deterministic) inductive definitions rather than recursion equations as a basic paradigm and show how this makes it easier to add the plumbing
On the evaluation of Web Radio
We develop an evaluation method for Web radio, and perform it to see what we can be learnt about seven prominent Web radio sites. We also evaluate a commercial FM radio station for control purposes. We present a taxonomy of Web radio, and we give our observations and conclusions on this evaluation
Thermodynamics and collapse of self-gravitating Brownian particles in D dimensions
We address the thermodynamics (equilibrium density profiles, phase diagram,
instability analysis...) and the collapse of a self-gravitating gas of Brownian
particles in D dimensions, in both canonical and microcanonical ensembles. In
the canonical ensemble, we derive the analytic form of the density scaling
profile which decays as f(x)=x^{-\alpha}, with alpha=2. In the microcanonical
ensemble, we show that f decays as f(x)=x^{-\alpha_{max}}, where \alpha_{max}
is a non-trivial exponent. We derive exact expansions for alpha_{max} and f in
the limit of large D. Finally, we solve the problem in D=2, which displays
rather rich and peculiar features
