Evolution of a Bose-condensed gas under variations of the confining potential
We discuss the dynamic properties of a trapped Bose-condensed gas under
variations of the confining field and find analytical scaling solutions for the
evolving coherent state (condensate). We further discuss the characteristic

Electronic Structure of Disclinated Graphene in an Uniform Magnetic Field
The electronic structure in the vicinity of the 1-heptagonal and 1-pentagonal
defects in the carbon graphene plane is investigated. Using a continuum gauge
field-theory model the local density of states around the Fermi energy is
calculated for both cases. In this model, the disclination is represented by an
SO(2) gauge vortex and corresponding metric follows from the elasticity
properties of the graphene membrane. To enhance the interval of energies, a
self-consistent perturbation scheme is used. The Landau states are investigated

Net Charge on a Noble Gas Atom Adsorbed on a Metallic Surface
Adsorbed noble gas atoms donate (on the average) a fraction of an electronic
charge to the substrate metal. The effect has been experimentally observed as
an adsorptive change in the electronic work function. The connection between
the effective net atomic charge and the binding energy of the atom to the metal

Uniformly Accelerated Charge in a Quantum Field: From Radiation Reaction to Unruh Effect
We present a stochastic theory for the nonequilibrium dynamics of charges
moving in a quantum scalar field based on the worldline influence functional
and the close-time-path (CTP or in-in) coarse-grained effective action method.
We summarize (1) the steps leading to a derivation of a modified
Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation whose solutions describe a causal semiclassical
theory free of runaway solutions and without pre-acceleration patholigies, and
(2) the transformation to a stochastic effective action which generates
Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac-Langevin equations depicting the fluctuations of a
particle's worldline around its semiclassical trajectory. We point out the
misconceptions in trying to directly relate radiation reaction to vacuum
fluctuations, and discuss how, in the framework that we have developed, an
array of phenomena, from classical radiation and radiation reaction to the
Unruh effect, are interrelated to each other as manifestations at the
classical, stochastic and quantum levels. Using this method we give a
derivation of the Unruh effect for the spacetime worldline coordinates of an
accelerating charge. Our stochastic particle-field model, which was inspired by
earlier work in cosmological backreaction, can be used as an analog to the
black hole backreaction problem describing the stochastic dynamics of a black

Urban energy consumption and CO2 emissions in Beijing: current and future
This paper calculates the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of Beijing over 2005–2011 in light of the Beijing’s energy balance table and the carbon emission coefficients of IPCC. Furthermore, based on a series of energy conservation planning program issued in Beijing, the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning System (LEAP)-BJ model is developed to study the energy consumption and CO2 emissions of Beijing’s six end-use sectors and the energy conversion sector over 2012–2030 under the BAU scenario and POL scenario. Some results are found in this research: (1) During 2005–2011, the energy consumption kept increasing, while the total CO2 emissions fluctuated obviously in 2008 and 2011. The energy structure and the industrial structure have been optimized to a certain extent. (2) If the policies are completely implemented, the POL scenario is projected to save 21.36 and 35.37 % of the total energy consumption and CO2 emissions than the BAU scenario during 2012 and 2030. (3) The POL scenario presents a more optimized energy structure compared with the BAU scenario, with the decrease of coal consumption and the increase of natural gas consumption. (4) The commerce and service sector and the energy conversion sector will become the largest contributor to energy consumption and CO2 emissions, respectively. The transport sector and the industrial sector are the two most potential sectors in energy savings and carbon reduction. In terms of subscenarios, the energy conservation in transport (TEC) is the most effective one. (5) The macroparameters, such as the GDP growth rate and the industrial structure, have great influence on the urban energy consumption and carbon emissions
Gastric cancer and Helicobacter pylori: a combined analysis of 12 case control studies nested within prospective cohorts
BACKGROUND: The magnitude of the association
between Helicobacter pylori and
incidence of gastric cancer is unclear. H
pylori infection and the circulating antibody
response can be lost with development
of cancer; thus retrospective studies
are subject to bias resulting from classifi-
cation of cases as H pylori negative when
they were infected in the past.
AIMS: To combine data from all case control
studies nested within prospective
cohorts to assess more reliably the relative
risk of gastric cancer associated with H
pylori infection.To investigate variation in
relative risk by age, sex, cancer type and
subsite, and interval between blood sampling
and cancer diagnosis.
METHODS: Studies were eligible if blood
samples for H pylori serology were collected
before diagnosis of gastric cancer in
cases. Identified published studies and two
unpublished studies were included. Individual
subject data were obtained for
each. Matched odds ratios (ORs) and 95%
confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated
for the association between H pylori
and gastric cancer.
RESULTS: Twelve studies with 1228 gastric
cancer cases were considered. The association
with H pylori was restricted to noncardia
cancers (OR 3.0; 95% CI 2.3–3.8)
and was stronger when blood samples for
H pylori serology were collected 10+ years
before cancer diagnosis (5.9; 3.4–10.3). H
pylori infection was not associated with an
altered overall risk of cardia cancer (1.0;
0.7–1.4).
CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that
5.9 is the best estimate of the relative risk
of non-cardia cancer associated with H
pylori infection and that H pylori does not
increase the risk of cardia cancer. They
also support the idea that when H pylori
status is assessed close to cancer diagnosis,
the magnitude of the non-cardia
association may be underestimated
High Altitude test of RPCs for the ARGO-YBJ experiment
A 50 m**2 RPC carpet was operated at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory
(Tibet) located 4300 m a.s.l. The performance of RPCs in detecting Extensive
Air Showers was studied. Efficiency and time resolution measurements at the
pressure and temperature conditions typical of high mountain laboratories, are
