Controversy surrounding the increased expression of TGFβ1 in asthma

Asthma is a waxing and waning disease that leads to structural changes in the airways, such as subepithelial fibrosis, increased mass of airway smooth muscle and epithelial metaplasia. Such a remodeling of the airways futher amplifies asthma symptoms, but its etiology is unknown. Transforming growth factor β1 is a pleiotropic cytokine involved in many fibrotic, oncologic and immunologic diseases and is believed to play an essential role in airway remodeling that occurs in asthmatic patients. Since it is secreted in an inactive form, the overall activity of this cytokine is not exclusively determined by its level of expression, but also by extensive and complex post-translational mechanisms, which are all importanin modulating the magnitude of the TGFβ1 response. Even if TGFβ1 upregulation in asthma is considered as a dogma by certain investigators in the field, the overall picture of the published litterature is not that clear and the cellular origin of this cytokine in the airways of asthmatics is still a contemporaneous debate. On the other hand, it is becoming clear that TGFβ1 signaling is increased in the lungs of asthmatics, which testifies the increased activity of this cytokine in asthma pathogenesis. The current work is an impartial and exhaustive compilation of the reported papers regarding the expression of TGFβ1 in human asthmatics. For the sake of comparison, several studies performed in animal models of the disease are also included. Inconsistencies observed in human studies are discussed and conclusions as well as trends from the current state of the litterature on the matter are proposed. Finally, the different points of regulation that can affect the amplitude of the TGFβ1 response are briefly revised and the possibility that TGFβ1 is disregulated at another level in asthma, rather than simply in its expression, is highlighted

root and callus development in cuttings of seven species of the genus bursera

In spite of its importance and diversity, species of the genus Bursera are not propagated extensively in Mexican nurseries, and there are few available studies on its propagation. To develop methods of propagation of native tree species for ecological restoration of tropical dry forests, a preliminary study was conducted on callus and root production in cuttings of Bursera lancifolia, B. longipes, B. fagaroides, B. bicolor, B. glabrifolia, B. copallifera, and B. bipinnata in response to two treatments: application of indolebutyric acid (IBA) powder (1500 and 10 000 ppm) and a control, with 15-18 cuttings per treatment. The cuttings were kept four months in bags with a sand, black earth and compost substrate in a rural nursery of Huajintlan, SW of the State of Morelos. The bags were in the open with regular irrigation and no control of environmental humidity. The percentage of callus formation was high (27-85%) in six species. The species with higher root production were B. fagaroides (70%) and B. glabrifolia (51%). In these species, as in B. copallifera (18%), root production did not increase with the application of IBA. In B. lancifolia (27%) and B. bipinnata (29%) there was not significant response in roots production with IBA application. Root production was low in B. longipes and B. bicolor (9 and 11%)

Implications to the electricity system of Paraguay of different demand scenarios and export prices to Brazil

Paraguay's power system is based entirely on hydropower. It serves as the largest net electricity exporter in Latin America. Nonetheless, the country´s electricity consumption per capita is one of the lowest in the world and the transmission and distribution network has one of the highest losses in Latin America. This paper presents an electricity expansion investment outlook (2018–2040) for Paraguay using OSeMOSYS, analyzing three electricity demand scenarios under different electricity export prices to Brazil. The study identifies the least-cost power generation mix, future investments and the financial requirements to meet the needs of different demand scenarios. We find that Paraguay will need to invest in hydropower plants, by mainly expanding the capacity of Yacyreta to cover its electricity needs and sustain national electricity exports levels. In the High demand scenario, where the electricity demand could approximately double by 2040, the country's overall electricity exports decrease by 50% compared to the Reference scenario. Based on the different scenarios examined, the government spends approximately 18.3–31.2 billion USD on power plant investments for the period 2018–2040 to cover future electricity demand. The findings could be useful in supporting decision-making concerning socio-economic development pathways in the country

    v. ill. 23 cm.QuarterlyAs part of an ongoing monitoring study of phytoplankton in coastal lagoons on the east side of the Gulf of California, Pyrodinium bahamense Plate, 1906 var. bahamense was collected in the Topolobampo–Santa Maria–Ohuira coastal lagoon system in the Gulf of California in May 2005. Average concentrations of P. bahamense were 100 cells liter_1. This finding is the first observation of vegetative cells of this tropical species in the Gulf of California and represents its northernmost occurrence to date
