High-protein diet for body weight loss
The ideal proportion of macronutrients in weight loss diets is currently under debate. There are evidences indicating that a higher proportion of protein during weight loss diets enhances the loss of body weight and fat mass, and reduces the loss of lean body mass. Nevertheless, the responsible mechanisms for these effects have not yet been fully elucidated. Furthermore, studies that evaluated the possible side effects of these diets on the renal function and on the nutritional state of calcium have shown inconclusive results. Therefore, this article has the objective to convey recent information about the effects of high-protein diets in the regulation of the body weight and body composition, besides its involved mechanisms, and its effects on the renal function and on the calcium nutritional status
Note: Vectorial-magneto optical Kerr effect technique combined with variable temperature and full angular range all in a single setup
Here, we report on a versatile full angular resolved/broad temperature range/vectorial magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) magnetometer, named TRISTAN. Its versatility relies on its capacity to probe temperature and angular dependencies of magnetization reversal processes without the need to do any intervention on the apparatus during measurements. The setup is a combination of a vectorial MOKE bench and a cryostat with optical access. The cryostat has a motorized rotatable sample holder with azimuthal correction. It allows for simultaneous and quantitative acquisition of the two in-plane magnetization components during the hysteresis loop at different temperatures from 4 K up to 500 K and in the whole angular range, without neither changing magnet orientation nor opening the cryostat. Measurements performed in a model system with competing collinear biaxial and uniaxial contributions are presented to illustrate its capabilitiesP.P. acknowledges financial support from MINECO through Contract No. JCI-2011- 09602. Galaxy-Induced Transformation of Dark Matter Halos
We use N-body/gasdynamical LambdaCDM cosmological simulations to examine the
effect of the assembly of a central galaxy on the shape and mass profile of its
dark halo. Two series of simulations are compared; one that follows only the
evolution of the dark matter component and a second one where a baryonic
component is added. These simulations include radiative cooling but neglect
star formation and feedback, leading most baryons to collect at the halo center
in a disk which is too small and too massive when compared with typical spiral.
This unrealistic model allows us, nevertheless, to gauge the maximum effect
that galaxies may have in transforming their dark halos. We find that the shape
of the halo becomes more axisymmetric: halos are transformed from triaxial into
essentially oblate systems, with well-aligned isopotential contours of roughly
constant flattening (c/a ~ 0.85). Halos always contract as a result of galaxy
assembly, but the effect is substantially less pronounced than predicted by the
"adiabatic contraction" hypothesis. The reduced contraction helps to reconcile
LambdaCDM halos with constraints on the dark matter content inside the solar
circle and should alleviate the long-standing difficulty of matching
simultaneously the scaling properties of galaxy disks and the luminosity
function. The halo contraction is also less pronounced than found in earlier
simulations, a disagreement that suggests that halo contraction is not solely a
function of the initial and final distribution of baryons. Not only how much
baryonic mass has been deposited at the center of a halo matters, but also the
mode of its deposition. It might prove impossible to predict the halo response
without a detailed understanding of a galaxy's assembly history. (Abriged)Comment: 11 pages and 9 figure
Room Temperature In-plane <100> Magnetic Easy Axis for Fe3O4/SrTiO3(001):Nb Grown by Infrared PLD
We examine the magnetic easy-axis directions of stoichiometric magnetite
films grown on SrTiO3:Nb by infrared pulsed-laser deposition. Spin-polarized
low-energy electron microscopy reveals that the individual magnetic domains are
magnetized along the in-plane film directions. Magneto-optical Kerr
effect measurements show that the maxima of the remanence and coercivity are
also along in-plane film directions. This easy-axis orientation differs
from bulk magnetite and films prepared by other techniques, establishing that
the magnetic anisotropy can be tuned by film growth.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figure
Emergence of the Stoner-Wohlfarth astroid in thin films at dynamic regime
The Stoner-Wohlfarth (SW) model is the simplest model that describes adequately the magnetization reversal of nanoscale systems that are small enough to contain single magnetic domains. However for larger sizes where multi-domain effects are present, e.g., in thin films, this simple macrospin approximation fails and the experimental critical curve, referred as SW astroid, is far from its predictions. Here we show that this discrepancy could vanish also in extended system. We present a detailed angular-dependent study of magnetization reversal dynamics of a thin film with well-defined uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, performed over 9 decades of applied field sweep rate (dH/dt). The angular-dependent properties display a gradual transition from domain wall pinning and motion-like behaviour to a nucleative single-particle one, as dH/dt increases. Remarkably, in the high dynamic regime, where nucleation of reversed domains is the dominant mechanism of the magnetization reversal (nucleative regime), the magnetic properties including the astroid become closer to the ones predicted by SW model. The results also show why the SW model can successfully describe other extended systems that present nucleative regime, even in quasi-static conditionsThis work has been supported by MINECO (Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad)
