Monte Carlo study of the critical temperature for the planar rotator model with nonmagnetic impurities
We performed Monte Carlo simulations to calculate the
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature for the
two-dimensional planar rotator model in the presence of nonmagnetic impurity
concentration . As expected, our calculation shows that the BKT
temperature decreases as the spin vacancies increase. There is a critical
dilution at which . The effective interaction
between a vortex-antivortex pair and a static nonmagnetic impurity is studied
analytically. A simple phenomenological argument based on the pair-impurity

Vortex behavior near a spin vacancy in 2D XY-magnets
The dynamical behavior of anisotropic two dimensional Heisenberg models is
still a matter of controversy. The existence of a central peak at all
temperatures and a rich structure of magnon peaks are not yet understood. It
seems that the central peaks are related, in some way, to structures like
vortices. In order to contribute to the discussion of the dynamical behavior of
the model we use Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations as well analytical
calculations to study the behavior of vortices in the presence of nonmagnetic
impurities. Our simulations show that vortices are attracted and trapped by the
impurities. Using this result we show that if we suppose that vortices are not
very much disturbed by the presence of the impurities, then they work as an
attractive potential to the vortices explaining the observed behavior in our

Rapid tranquillisation for agitated patients in emergency psychiatric rooms: a randomised trial of midazolam versus haloperidol plus promethazine
OBJECTIVE: To compare two widely used drug treatments for people with aggression or agitation due to mental illness.
DESIGN: Pragmatic, randomised clinical trial.
SETTING: Three psychiatric emergency rooms in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
SUBJECTS: 301 aggressive or agitated people.
INTERVENTIONS: Open treatment with intramuscular midazolam or intramuscular haloperidol plus promethazine.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Patients tranquil or sedated at 20 minutes. Secondary outcomes: patients tranquil or asleep by 40, 60, and 120 minutes; restrained or given extra drugs within 2 hours; severe adverse events; another episode of agitation or aggression; needing extra visits from doctor during first 24 hours; overall antipsychotic load in first 24 hours; and not discharged by two weeks
Soil biochemistry and microbial activity in vineyards under conventional and organic management at Northeast Brazil.
The São Francisco Submedium Valley is located at the Brazilian semiarid region and is an important center for irrigated fruit growing. This region is responsible for 97% of the national exportation of table grapes, including seedless grapes. This region is responsible for 97% of the national exportation of table grapes, including seedless grapes. Based on the fact that organic fertilization can improve soil quality, we compared the effects of conventional and organic soil management on microbial activity and mycorrhization of seedless grape crops. We measured glomerospores number, most probable number (MPN) of propagules, richness of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) species, AMF root colonization, EE-BRSP production, carbon microbial biomass (C-MB), microbial respiration, fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activity (FDA) and metabolic coefficient (qCO2). The organic management led to an increase in all variables with the exception of EE-BRSP and qCO2. Mycorrhizal colonization increased from 4.7% in conventional crops to 15.9% in organic crops. Spore number ranged from 4.1 to 12.4 per 50 g-1 soil in both management systems. The most probable number of AMF propagules increased from 79 cm-3 soil in the conventional system to 110 cm-3 soil in the organic system. Microbial carbon, CO2 emission, and FDA activity were increased by 100 to 200% in the organic crop. Thirteen species of AMF were identified, the majority in the organic cultivation system. Acaulospora excavata, Entrophospora infrequens, Glomus sp.3 and Scutellospora sp. were found only in the organically managed crop. S. gregaria was found only in the conventional crop. Oscillating Solitons Pinned to a Nonmagnetic Impurity in Layered Antiferromagnets
We argue that an oscillatory motion of impurity-pinned solitons may occur in
layered antiferromagnetic compounds. The characteristic frequencies of these
modes, that may be detected by resonance or inelastic neutron scattering, are

Dynamic culturing of cartilage tissue: the significance of hydrostatic pressure
Human articular cartilage functions under a wide range of mechanical loads in synovial joints, where hydrostatic pressure (HP) is the prevalent actuating force. We hypothesized that the formation of engineered cartilage can be augmented by applying such physiologic stimuli to chondrogenic cells or stem cells, cultured in hydrogels, using custom-designed HP bioreactors. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the effects of distinct HP regimens on cartilage formation in vitro by either human nasal chondrocytes (HNCs) or human adipose stem cells (hASCs) encapsulated in gellan gum (GG) hydrogels. To this end, we varied the frequency of low HP, by applying pulsatile hydrostatic pressure or a steady hydrostatic pressure load to HNC-GG constructs over a period of 3 weeks, and evaluated their effects on cartilage tissue-engineering outcomes. HNCs (10 · 106 cells/ mL) were encapsulated in GG hydrogels (1.5%) and cultured in a chondrogenic medium under three regimens for 3 weeks: (1) 0.4MPa Pulsatile HP; (2) 0.4MPa Steady HP; and (3) Static. Subsequently, we applied the pulsatile regimen to hASC-GG constructs and varied the amplitude of loading, by generating both low (0.4 MPa) and physiologic (5 MPa) HP levels. hASCs (10x106 cells/mL) were encapsulated in GG hydrogels (1.5%) and cultured in a chondrogenic medium under three regimens for 4 weeks: (1) 0.4MPa Pulsatile HP; (2) 5MPa Pulsatile HP; and (3) Static. In the HNC study, the best tissue development was achieved by the pulsatile HP regimen, whereas in the hASC study, greater chondrogenic differentiation and matrix deposition were obtained for physiologic loading, as evidenced by gene expression of aggrecan, collagen type II, and sox-9; metachromatic staining of cartilage extracellular matrix; and immunolocalization of collagens. We thus propose that both HNCs and hASCs detect and respond to physical forces, thus resembling joint loading, by enhancing cartilage tissue development in a frequency- and amplitude-dependant manner.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) - SFRH/BD/42316/200
Coherent Photoproduction of pi^+ from 3^He
We have measured the differential cross section for the
He reaction. This reaction was studied using
the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. Real photons
produced with the Hall-B bremsstrahlung tagging system in the energy range from
0.50 to 1.55 GeV were incident on a cryogenic liquid He target. The
differential cross sections for the He
reaction were measured as a function of photon-beam energy and pion-scattering
angle. Theoretical predictions to date cannot explain the large cross sections
except at backward angles, showing that additional components must be added to

A Bayesian analysis of pentaquark signals from CLAS data
We examine the results of two measurements by the CLAS collaboration, one of
which claimed evidence for a pentaquark, whilst the other found no
such evidence. The unique feature of these two experiments was that they were
performed with the same experimental setup. Using a Bayesian analysis we find
that the results of the two experiments are in fact compatible with each other,
but that the first measurement did not contain sufficient information to
determine unambiguously the existence of a . Further, we suggest a
means by which the existence of a new candidate particle can be tested in a

First measurement of direct photoproduction on the proton
We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive
meson photoproduction on protons for GeV and GeV. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas
Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its
decay in the channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the
reaction . Clear evidence of the meson
was found in the interference between and waves at GeV. The -wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of
the was found to be a factor of 50 smaller than the cross section
for the meson. This is the first time the meson has been
measured in a photoproduction experiment
Multiwavelength studies of MHD waves in the solar chromosphere: An overview of recent results
The chromosphere is a thin layer of the solar atmosphere that bridges the
relatively cool photosphere and the intensely heated transition region and
corona. Compressible and incompressible waves propagating through the
chromosphere can supply significant amounts of energy to the interface region
and corona. In recent years an abundance of high-resolution observations from
state-of-the-art facilities have provided new and exciting ways of
disentangling the characteristics of oscillatory phenomena propagating through
the dynamic chromosphere. Coupled with rapid advancements in
magnetohydrodynamic wave theory, we are now in an ideal position to thoroughly
investigate the role waves play in supplying energy to sustain chromospheric
and coronal heating. Here, we review the recent progress made in
characterising, categorising and interpreting oscillations manifesting in the
