Comments on large-N volume independence
We study aspects of the large-N volume independence on R**3 x L**G, where
L**G is a G-site lattice for Yang-Mills theory with adjoint Wilson-fermions. We
find the critical number of lattice sites above which the center-symmetry
analysis on L**G agrees with the one on the continuum S**1. For Wilson
parameter set to one and G>=2, the two analyses agree. One-loop radiative
corrections to Wilson-line masses are finite, reminiscent of the
UV-insensitivity of the Higgs mass in deconstruction/Little-Higgs theories.
Even for theories with G=1, volume independence in QCD(adj) may be guaranteed
to work by tuning one low-energy effective field theory parameter. Within the
parameter space of the theory, at most three operators of the 3d effective
field theory exhibit one-loop UV-sensitivity. This opens the analytical
prospect to study 4d non-perturbative physics by using lower dimensional field

Goldstone Fermion Dark Matter
We propose that the fermionic superpartner of a weak-scale Goldstone boson
can be a natural WIMP candidate. The p-wave annihilation of this `Goldstone
fermion' into pairs of Goldstone bosons automatically generates the correct
relic abundance, whereas the XENON100 direct detection bounds are evaded due to
suppressed couplings to the Standard Model. Further, it is able to avoid
indirect detection constraints because the relevant s-wave annihilations are
small. The interactions of the Goldstone supermultiplet can induce non-standard

WIMP-nucleus scattering in chiral effective theory
We discuss long-distance QCD corrections to the WIMP-nucleon(s) interactions
in the framework of chiral effective theory. For scalar-mediated WIMP-quark
interactions, we calculate all the next-to-leading-order corrections to the
WIMP-nucleus elastic cross-section, including two-nucleon amplitudes and
recoil-energy dependent shifts to the single-nucleon scalar form factors. As a
consequence, the scalar-mediated WIMP-nucleus cross-section cannot be
parameterized in terms of just two quantities, namely the neutron and proton
scalar form factors at zero momentum transfer, but additional parameters
appear, depending on the short-distance WIMP-quark interaction. Moreover,
multiplicative factorization of the cross-section into particle, nuclear and
astro-particle parts is violated. In practice, while the new effects are of the
natural size expected by chiral power counting, they become very important in
those regions of parameter space where the leading order WIMP-nucleus amplitude
is suppressed, including the so-called "isospin-violating dark matter" regime.
In these regions of parameter space we find order-of-magnitude corrections to
the total scattering rates and qualitative changes to the shape of recoil

Effective Dark Matter Model: Relic density, CDMS II, Fermi LAT and LHC
The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search recently announced the observation of two
signal events with a 77% confidence level. Although statistically inconclusive,
it is nevertheless suggestive. In this work we present a model-independent
analysis on the implication of a positive signal in dark matter scattering off
nuclei. Assuming the interaction between (scalar, fermion or vector) dark
matter and the standard model induced by unknown new physics at the scale
, we examine various dimension-6 tree-level induced operators and
constrain them using the current experimental data, e.g. the WMAP data of the
relic abundance, CDMS II direct detection of the spin-independent scattering,
and indirect detection data (Fermi LAT cosmic gamma-ray), etc. Finally, the LHC
reach is also explored
LHC and lepton flavour violation phenomenology of a left-right extension of the MSSM
We study the phenomenology of a supersymmetric left-right model, assuming
minimal supergravity boundary conditions. Both left-right and (B-L) symmetries
are broken at an energy scale close to, but significantly below the GUT scale.
Neutrino data is explained via a seesaw mechanism. We calculate the RGEs for
superpotential and soft parameters complete at 2-loop order. At low energies
lepton flavour violation (LFV) and small, but potentially measurable mass
splittings in the charged scalar lepton sector appear, due to the RGE running.
Different from the supersymmetric 'pure seesaw' models, both, LFV and slepton
mass splittings, occur not only in the left- but also in the right slepton
sector. Especially, ratios of LFV slepton decays, such as Br()/Br() are sensitive to the
ratio of (B-L) and left-right symmetry breaking scales. Also the model predicts
a polarization asymmetry of the outgoing positrons in the decay , A ~ [0,1], which differs from the pure seesaw 'prediction' A=1$.
Observation of any of these signals allows to distinguish this model from any
of the three standard, pure (mSugra) seesaw setups.Comment: 43 pages, 17 figure
CMB Telescopes and Optical Systems
The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) is now firmly established as
a fundamental and essential probe of the geometry, constituents, and birth of
the Universe. The CMB is a potent observable because it can be measured with
precision and accuracy. Just as importantly, theoretical models of the Universe
can predict the characteristics of the CMB to high accuracy, and those
predictions can be directly compared to observations. There are multiple
aspects associated with making a precise measurement. In this review, we focus
on optical components for the instrumentation used to measure the CMB
polarization and temperature anisotropy. We begin with an overview of general
considerations for CMB observations and discuss common concepts used in the
community. We next consider a variety of alternatives available for a designer
of a CMB telescope. Our discussion is guided by the ground and balloon-based
instruments that have been implemented over the years. In the same vein, we
compare the arc-minute resolution Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the
South Pole Telescope (SPT). CMB interferometers are presented briefly. We
conclude with a comparison of the four CMB satellites, Relikt, COBE, WMAP, and
Planck, to demonstrate a remarkable evolution in design, sensitivity,

Gamma-rays from millisecond pulsars in Globular Clusters
Globular clusters (GCs) with their ages of the order of several billion years
contain many final products of evolution of stars such as: neutron stars, white
dwarfs and probably also black holes. These compact objects can be at present
responsible for the acceleration of particles to relativistic energies.
Therefore, gamma-ray emission is expected from GCs as a result of radiation
processes occurring either in the inner magnetosperes of millisecond pulsars or
in the vicinity of accreting neutron stars and white dwarfs or as a result of
interaction of particles leaving the compact objects with the strong radiation
field within the GC. Recently, GeV gamma-ray emission has been detected from
several GCs by the new satellite observatory Fermi. Also Cherenkov telescopes
reported interesting upper limits at the TeV energies which start to constrain
the content of GCs. We review the results of these gamma-ray observations in

Biview learning for human posture segmentation from 3D points cloud
Posture segmentation plays an essential role in human motion analysis. The state-of-the-art method extracts sufficiently high-dimensional features from 3D depth images for each 3D point and learns an efficient body part classifier. However, high-dimensional features are memory-consuming and difficult to handle on large-scale training dataset. In this paper, we propose an efficient two-stage dimension reduction scheme, termed biview learning, to encode two independent views which are depth-difference features (DDF) and relative position features (RPF). Biview learning explores the complementary property of DDF and RPF, and uses two stages to learn a compact yet comprehensive low-dimensional feature space for posture segmentation. In the first stage, discriminative locality alignment (DLA) is applied to the high-dimensional DDF to learn a discriminative low-dimensional representation. In the second stage, canonical correlation analysis (CCA) is used to explore the complementary property of RPF and the dimensionality reduced DDF. Finally, we train a support vector machine (SVM) over the output of CCA. We carefully validate the effectiveness of DLA and CCA utilized in the two-stage scheme on our 3D human points cloud dataset. Minimal Supersymmetric Inverse Seesaw: Neutrino masses, lepton flavour violation and LHC phenomenology
We study neutrino masses in the framework of the supersymmetric inverse
seesaw model. Different from the non-supersymmetric version a minimal
realization with just one pair of singlets is sufficient to explain all
neutrino data. We compute the neutrino mass matrix up to 1-loop order and show
how neutrino data can be described in terms of the model parameters. We then
calculate rates for lepton flavour violating (LFV) processes, such as , and chargino decays to singlet scalar neutrinos. The latter decays
are potentially observable at the LHC and show a characteristic decay pattern
dictated by the same parameters which generate the observed large neutrino
