    Bituminous mixtures with low percentage of natural aggregates and rubber modified bitumen with wax

    The three mixtures included in the Spanish specifications (asphalt concrete, porous asphalt and very thin asphalt concrete) were designed replacing more than 80% of the natural aggregates by black slag of electric arc furnace and recycled asphalt pavement. Besides, a rubber modified bitumen was used as binder, analyzing the performance of a fatty acid amide wax as additive to decrease its viscosity at mixing temperature, and avoid the higher manufacturing temperature of this type of bitumen. Three stages were carried out to design the mixtures: first, the viscosity analysis of the rubber modified bitumen when the wax is added. Second, the experimental design of the mixtures with the alternative aggregates at conventional temperature, using the rubber modified bitumen without wax. Finally, the study of the behaviour of the three mixes with the same dosage of the previous phase, but manufactured at reduced temperature, that is including the fatty acid amide wax to the binder. The tests of the Spanish specifications have been performed to design the mixtures and compare their performance in both conditions (with and without wax): void characteristics, water sensitivity test, wheel tracking test, and Cantabro loss particle test in dry and wet conditions. The results have shown that it is feasible to design mixtures in which practically the whole mineral skeleton comes from black slag and recycled asphalt, manufacturing them with a rubber modified bitumen but at the same range of temperatures than conventional 50/70 penetration grade binder, and fulfilling the standards for any climatic zone and heavy traffic level

    Chemical resistance of the gram-negative bacteria to different sanitizers in a water purification system

    BACKGROUND: Purified water for pharmaceutical purposes must be free of microbial contamination and pyrogens. Even with the additional sanitary and disinfecting treatments applied to the system (sequential operational stages), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas alcaligenes, Pseudomonas picketti, Flavobacterium aureum, Acinetobacter lowffi and Pseudomonas diminuta were isolated and identified from a thirteen-stage purification system. To evaluate the efficacy of the chemical agents used in the disinfecting process along with those used to adjust chemical characteristics of the system, over the identified bacteria, the kinetic parameter of killing time (D-value) necessary to inactivate 90% of the initial bioburden (decimal reduction time) was experimentally determined. METHODS: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pseudomonas alcaligenes, Pseudomonas picketti, Flavobacterium aureum, Acinetobacter lowffi and Pseudomonas diminuta were called in house (wild) bacteria. Pseudomonas diminuta ATCC 11568, Pseudomonas alcaligenes INCQS , Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442, Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 3178, Pseudomonas picketti ATCC 5031, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 937 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 were used as 'standard' bacteria to evaluate resistance at 25°C against either 0.5% citric acid, 0.5% hydrochloric acid, 70% ethanol, 0.5% sodium bisulfite, 0.4% sodium hydroxide, 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, or a mixture of 2.2% hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) and 0.45% peracetic acid. RESULTS: The efficacy of the sanitizers varied with concentration and contact time to reduce decimal logarithmic (log(10)) population (n cycles). To kill 90% of the initial population (or one log(10 )cycle), the necessary time (D-value) was for P. aeruginosa into: (i) 0.5% citric acid, D = 3.8 min; (ii) 0.5% hydrochloric acid, D = 6.9 min; (iii) 70% ethanol, D = 9.7 min; (iv) 0.5% sodium bisulfite, D = 5.3 min; (v) 0.4% sodium hydroxide, D = 14.2 min; (vi) 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, D = 7.9 min; (vii) mixture of hydrogen peroxide (2.2%) plus peracetic acid (0.45%), D = 5.5 min. CONCLUSION: The contact time of 180 min of the system with the mixture of H(2)O(2)+ peracetic acid, a total theoretical reduction of 6 log(10 )cycles was attained in the water purified storage tank and distribution loop. The contact time between the water purification system (WPS) and the sanitary agents should be reviewed to reach sufficient bioburden reduction (over 6 log(10))

    Development of an estimative model for the optimal tack coat dosage based on aggregate gradation of hot mix asphalt pavements

    In this work the performance of tack coats on asphalt pavement layers is analysed. Adjustment models based on experimental measurements were implemented, relating surface layer macro-texture and aggregate content larger than 8 mm. The best fits were obtained with a Gompertz model, which follows the expected physical macro-texture changes outside the test range. Shear strength was analysed, through prediction curves of each evaluated tack coat dosage, with an optimum tack coat performance for aggregate contents larger than 8 mm between 45% and 50%, and no relevant influence of the tack coat dosage used.The authors would like to acknowledge the support provided by the Technologic Research Construction Group (GITECO) and the Group of Roads of Santander at Cantabria University for the development of tests and samples.     Measurement of D+- and D0 production in deep inelastic scattering using a lifetime tag at HERA

    The production of D-+/-- and D-0-mesons has been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 133.6 pb(-1). The measurements cover the kinematic range 5 < Q(2) < 1000 GeV2, 0.02 < y < 0.7, 1.5 < p(T)(D) < 15 GeV and |eta(D)| < 1.6. Combinatorial background to the D-meson signals is reduced by using the ZEUS microvertex detector to reconstruct displaced secondary vertices. Production cross sections are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD, which is found to describe the data well. Measurements are extrapolated to the full kinematic phase space in order to obtain the open-charm contribution, F-2(c (c) over bar), to the proton structure function, F-2

    Trial Design and Objectives for Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer: Updated Recommendations From the Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Working Group 3.

    Purpose Evolving treatments, disease phenotypes, and biology, together with a changing drug development environment, have created the need to revise castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) clinical trial recommendations to succeed those from prior Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Working Groups.Methods An international expert committee of prostate cancer clinical investigators (the Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Working Group 3 [PCWG3]) was reconvened and expanded and met in 2012-2015 to formulate updated criteria on the basis of emerging trial data and validation studies of the Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials Working Group 2 recommendations.Results PCWG3 recommends that baseline patient assessment include tumor histology, detailed records of prior systemic treatments and responses, and a detailed reporting of disease subtypes based on an anatomic pattern of metastatic spread. New recommendations for trial outcome measures include the time to event end point of symptomatic skeletal events, as well as time to first metastasis and time to progression for trials in the nonmetastatic CRPC state. PCWG3 introduces the concept of no longer clinically benefiting to underscore the distinction between first evidence of progression and the clinical need to terminate or change treatment, and the importance of documenting progression in existing lesions as distinct from the development of new lesions. Serial biologic profiling using tumor samples from biopsies, blood-based diagnostics, and/or imaging is also recommended to gain insight into mechanisms of resistance and to identify predictive biomarkers of sensitivity for use in prospective trials.Conclusion PCWG3 moves drug development closer to unmet needs in clinical practice by focusing on disease manifestations most likely to affect prognosis adversely for therapeutics tested in both nonmetastatic and metastatic CRPC populations. Consultation with regulatory authorities is recommended if a trial is intended to seek support for drug approval

    Anodizing - interplay between bath aging and oxide formation and properties

    The present study investigates the interplay between ongoing bath aging during the anodizing process and the formation and properties of the anodic formed oxide layers on AA 1050 in sulfuric acid. The change in the bath over the time of use is studied by controlling the conductivity of the bath. The pH value and the concentration of Al3+ ions in the bath are simultaneously measured. The kinetic of the oxide formation depending on the bath aging is electrochemically investigated by repetitive potential controlled anodizing of reference samples. Supplementary material diagnostics by SEM and infrared reflection–absorption spectroscopy show a significant decrease of the oxide film thickness as well as the molecular composition with ongoing bath aging

    Epidemiology of mechanical ventilation: analysis of the SAPS 3 database

    OBJECTIVE: To evaluate current practice of mechanical ventilation in the ICU and the characteristics and outcomes of patients receiving it. DESIGN: Pre-planned sub-study of a multicenter, multinational cohort study (SAPS 3). PATIENTS: 13,322 patients admitted to 299 intensive care units (ICUs) from 35 countries. INTERVENTIONS: None. MAIN MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Patients were divided into three groups: no mechanical ventilation (MV), noninvasive MV (NIV), and invasive MV. More than half of the patients (53% [CI: 52.2-53.9%]) were mechanically ventilated at ICU admission. FIO2, VT and PEEP used during invasive MV were on average 50% (40-80%), 8 mL/kg actual body weight (6.9-9.4 mL/kg) and 5 cmH2O (3-6 cmH2O), respectively. Several invMV patients (17.3% (CI:16.4-18.3%)) were ventilated with zero PEEP (ZEEP). These patients exhibited a significantly increased risk-adjusted hospital mortality, compared with patients ventilated with higher PEEP (O/E ratio 1.12 [1.05-1.18]). NIV was used in 4.2% (CI: 3.8-4.5%) of all patients and was associated with an improved risk-adjusted outcome (OR 0.79, [0.69-0.90]). CONCLUSION: Ventilation mode and parameter settings for MV varied significantly across ICUs. Our results provide evidence that some ventilatory modes and settings could still be used against current evidence and recommendations. This includes ventilation with tidal volumes >8mL/kg body weight in patients with a low PaO2/FiO2 ratio and ZEEP in invMV patients. Invasive mechanical ventilation with ZEEP was associated with a worse outcome, even after controlling for severity of disease. Since our study did not document indications for MV, the association between MV settings and outcome must be viewed with caution

    Using compost from urban solid waste to prevent erosion in road embankments

    This paper describes how compost, a by-product generated by solid waste treatment plants, can be usefully applied to road embankments to prevent erosion. Our study analyzed this process in terms of the following variables: (1) location and orientation; (2) embankment slope; (3) soil and compost characteristics; (4) compost dosage; (5) vegetation species; (6) plot dimensions; and (7) planting method. The results ob- tained focus on the vegetation survival rate, plant growth and germination; colonization of other species; cover crop for plots; and erosion estimation. It was found that when greater quantities of compost were added to embankments, soil loss was decreased. The addition of this material also produced a marked increase in plant growth, the survival rate of manually planted vegetation, the colonization of other species, as well as the cover crop. However, we observed that compost seemed to hinder the germination of hydroseeded species, whereas colonizing plants germinated more quickly. The side slope was not found to be a significant factor for manually planted species, but turned out to be crucial for hydroseeded varieties.Department of Civil Engineering, University of Granada, Spai
