Exploring the Nature of Weak Chandra Sources near the Galactic Centre
We present results from the first near-IR imaging of the weak X-ray sources
discovered in the Chandra/ACIS-I survey (Wang et al. 2002) towards the Galactic
Centre (GC). These ~800 discrete sources, which contribute significantly to the
GC X-ray emission, represent an important and previously unknown population
within the Galaxy. From our VLT observations we will identify likely IR
counterparts to a sample of the hardest sources, which are most likely X-ray
binaries. With these data we can place constraints on the nature of the

Effect of spirometry on intra-thoracic pressures
Due to the high intra-thoracic pressures associated with forced vital capacity manoeuvres, spirometry is contraindicated for vulnerable patients. However, the typical pressure response to spirometry has not been reported. Eight healthy, recreationally-active men performed spirometry while oesophageal pressure was recorded using a latex balloon-tipped catheter. Peak oesophageal pressure during inspiration was - 47 ± 9 cmH O (37 ± 10% of maximal inspiratory pressure), while peak oesophageal pressure during forced expiration was 102 ± 34 cmH O (75 ± 17% of maximal expiratory pressure). The deleterious consequences of spirometry might be associated with intra-thoracic pressures that approach maximal values during forced expiration
Effects of study design and allocation on participant behaviour-ESDA: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial
Background: What study participants think about the nature of a study has been hypothesised to affect subsequent behaviour and to potentially bias study findings. In this trial we examine the impact of awareness of study design and allocation on participant drinking behaviour.
Methods/Design: A three-arm parallel group randomised controlled trial design will be used. All recruitment, screening, randomisation, and follow-up will be conducted on-line among university students. Participants who indicate a hazardous level of alcohol consumption will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. Group A will be informed their drinking will be assessed at baseline and again in one month (as in a cohort study design). Group B will be told the study is an intervention trial and they are in the control group. Group C will be told the study is an intervention trial and they are in the intervention group. All will receive exactly the same brief educational material to read. After one month, alcohol intake for the past 4 weeks will be assessed.
Discussion: The experimental manipulations address subtle and previously unexplored ways in which participant behaviour may be unwittingly influenced by standard practice in trials. Given the necessity of relying on self-reported outcome, it will not be possible to distinguish true behaviour change from reporting artefact. This does not matter in the present study, as any effects of awareness of study design or allocation involve bias that is not well understood. There has been little research on awareness effects, and our outcomes will provide an indication of the possible value of further studies of this type and inform hypothesis generation
Scaling and Universality in City Space Syntax: between Zipf and Matthew
We report about universality of rank-integration distributions of open spaces
in city space syntax similar to the famous rank-size distributions of cities
(Zipf's law). We also demonstrate that the degree of choice an open space
represents for other spaces directly linked to it in a city follows a power law
statistic. Universal statistical behavior of space syntax measures uncovers the
universality of the city creation mechanism. We suggest that the observed
universality may help to establish the international definition of a city as a

The aim of this commentary is to provide an overview of clinical outcome measures that are currently recommended for use in UK Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), focusing on measures that are applicable across a wide range of conditions with established validity and reliability, or innovative in their design. We also provide an overview of the barriers and drivers to the use of Routine Outcome Measurement (ROM) in clinical practice
Holographic formula for the determinant of the scattering operator in thermal AdS
A 'holographic formula' expressing the functional determinant of the
scattering operator in an asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter(ALAdS) space
has been proposed in terms of a relative functional determinant of the scalar
Laplacian in the bulk. It stems from considerations in AdS/CFT correspondence
of a quantum correction to the partition function in the bulk and the
corresponding subleading correction at large N on the boundary. In this paper
we probe this prediction for a class of quotients of hyperbolic space by a
discrete subgroup of isometries. We restrict to the simplest situation of an
abelian group where the quotient geometry describes thermal AdS and also the
non-spinning BTZ instanton. The bulk computation is explicitly done using the
method of images and the answer can be encoded in a (Patterson-)Selberg

Gravitational waves from intermediate-mass black holes in young clusters
Massive young clusters (YCs) are expected to host intermediate-mass black
holes (IMBHs) born via runaway collapse. These IMBHs are likely in binaries and
can undergo mergers with other compact objects, such as stellar mass black
holes (BHs) and neutron stars (NSs). We derive the frequency of such mergers
starting from information available in the Local Universe. Mergers of IMBH-NS
and IMBH-BH binaries are sources of gravitational waves (GWs), which might
allow us to reveal the presence of IMBHs. We thus examine their detectability
by current and future GW observatories, both ground- and space-based. In
particular, as representative of different classes of instruments we consider
Initial and Advanced LIGO, the Einstein gravitational-wave Telescope (ET) and
the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). We find that IMBH mergers are
unlikely to be detected with instruments operating at the current sensitivity
(Initial LIGO). LISA detections are disfavored by the mass range of IMBH-NS and
IMBH-BH binaries: less than one event per year is expected to be observed by
such instrument. Advanced LIGO is expected to observe a few merger events
involving IMBH binaries in a 1-year long observation. Advanced LIGO is
particularly suited for mergers of relatively light IMBHs (~100 Msun) with
stellar mass BHs. The number of mergers detectable with ET is much larger: tens
(hundreds) of IMBH-NS (IMBH-BH) mergers might be observed per year, according
to the runaway collapse scenario for the formation of IMBHs. We note that our
results are affected by large uncertainties, produced by poor observational
constraints on many of the physical processes involved in this study, such as

Statistical mechanics of violent relaxation in stellar systems
We discuss the statistical mechanics of violent relaxation in stellar systems following the pioneering work of Lynden-Bell (1967). The solutions of the gravitational Vlasov-Poisson system develop finer and finer filaments so that a statistical description is appropriate to smooth out the small-scales and describe the ``coarse-grained'' dynamics. In a coarse-grained sense, the system is expected to reach an equilibrium state of a Fermi-Dirac type within a few dynamical times. We describe in detail the equilibrium phase diagram and the nature of phase transitions which occur in self-gravitating systems. Then, we introduce a small-scale parametrization of the Vlasov equation and propose a set of relaxation equations for the coarse-grained dynamics. These relaxation equations, of a generalized Fokker-Planck type, are derived from a Maximum Entropy Production Principle (MEPP). We make a link with the quasilinear theory of the Vlasov-Poisson system and derive a truncated model appropriate to collisionless systems subject to tidal forces. With the aid of this kinetic theory, we qualitatively discuss the concept of ``incomplete relaxation'' and the limitations of Lynden-Bell's theory
Inhomogeneous isospin distribution in the reactions of 28Si + 112Sn and 124Sn at 30 and 50 MeV/nucleon
We have created quasiprojectiles of varying isospin via peripheral reactions
of 28Si + 112Sn and 124Sn at 30 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The quasiprojectiles have
been reconstructed from completely isotopically identified fragments. The
difference in N/Z of the reconstructed quasiprojectiles allows the
investigation of the disassembly as a function of the isospin of the
fragmenting system. The isobaric yield ratio 3H/3He depends strongly on N/Z
ratio of quasiprojectiles. The dependences of mean fragment multiplicity and
mean N/Z ratio of the fragments on N/Z ratio of the quasiprojectile are
different for light charged particles and intermediate mass fragments.
Observation of a different N/Z ratio of light charged particles and
intermediate mass fragments is consistent with an inhomogeneous distribution of

REDUCE-IT USA: Results From the 3146 Patients Randomized in the United States.
BackgroundSome trials have found that patients from the United States derive less benefit than patients enrolled outside the United States. This prespecified REDUCE-IT (Reduction of Cardiovascular Events with Icosapent Ethyl - Intervention Trial) subgroup analysis was conducted to determine the degree of benefit of icosapent ethyl in the United States.MethodsREDUCE-IT randomized 8179 statin-treated patients with qualifying triglycerides ≥135 and <500 mg/dL and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol >40 and ≤100 mg/dL and a history of atherosclerosis or diabetes mellitus to icosapent ethyl 4 g/d or placebo. The primary composite end point was cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, coronary revascularization, or hospitalization for unstable angina. The key secondary composite end point was cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. A hierarchy was prespecified for examination of individual and composite end points.ResultsA total of 3146 US patients (38.5% of the trial) were randomized and followed for a median of 4.9 years; 32.3% were women and 9.7% were Hispanic. The primary composite end point occurred in 24.7% of placebo-treated patients versus 18.2% of icosapent ethyl-treated patients (hazard ratio [HR], 0.69 [95% CI, 0.59-0.80]; P=0.000001); the key secondary composite end point occurred in 16.6% versus 12.1% (HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.57-0.83]; P=0.00008). All prespecified hierarchical end points were meaningfully and significantly reduced, including cardiovascular death (6.7% to 4.7%; HR, 0.66 [95% CI, 0.49-0.90]; P=0.007), myocardial infarction (8.8% to 6.7%; HR, 0.72 [95% CI, 0.56-0.93]; P=0.01), stroke (4.1% to 2.6%; HR, 0.63 [95% CI, 0.43-0.93]; P=0.02), and all-cause mortality (9.8% to 7.2%; HR, 0.70 [95% CI, 0.55-0.90]; P=0.004); for all-cause mortality in the US versus non-US patients, Pinteraction=0.02. Safety and tolerability findings were consistent with the full study cohort.ConclusionsWhereas the non-US subgroup showed significant reductions in the primary and key secondary end points, the US subgroup demonstrated particularly robust risk reductions across a variety of individual and composite end points, including all-cause mortality.Clinical trial registrationURL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov.
