Global Continua of Positive Equilibria for some Quasilinear Parabolic Equation with a Nonlocal Initial Condition
This paper is concerned with a quaslinear parabolic equation including a
nonlinear nonlocal initial condition. The problem arises as equilibrium
equation in population dynamics with nonlinear diffusion. We make use of global
bifurcation theory to prove existence of an unbounded continuum of positive
solutions
Ferromagnetic resonance in periodic particle arrays
We report measurements of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra of arrays
of submicron size periodic particle arrays of permalloy produced by
electron-beam lithography. In contrast to plane ferromagnetic films, the
spectra of the arrays show a number of additional resonance peaks, whose
position depends strongly on the orientation of the external magnetic field and
the interparticle interaction. Time-dependent micromagnetic simulation of the
ac response show that these peaks are associated with coupled exchange and

New approaches to measuring anthelminthic drug efficacy: parasitological responses of childhood schistosome infections to treatment with praziquantel
By 2020, the global health community aims to control and eliminate human helminthiases, including schistosomiasis in selected African countries, principally by preventive chemotherapy (PCT) through mass drug administration (MDA) of anthelminthics. Quantitative monitoring of anthelminthic responses is crucial for promptly detecting changes in efficacy, potentially indicative of emerging drug resistance. Statistical models offer a powerful means to delineate and compare efficacy among individuals, among groups of individuals and among populations.; We illustrate a variety of statistical frameworks that offer different levels of inference by analysing data from nine previous studies on egg counts collected from African children before and after administration of praziquantel.; We quantify responses to praziquantel as egg reduction rates (ERRs), using different frameworks to estimate ERRs among population strata, as average responses, and within strata, as individual responses. We compare our model-based average ERRs to corresponding model-free estimates, using as reference the World Health Organization (WHO) 90 % threshold of optimal efficacy. We estimate distributions of individual responses and summarize the variation among these responses as the fraction of ERRs falling below the WHO threshold.; Generic models for evaluating responses to anthelminthics deepen our understanding of variation among populations, sub-populations and individuals. We discuss the future application of statistical modelling approaches for monitoring and evaluation of PCT programmes targeting human helminthiases in the context of the WHO 2020 control and elimination goals
CMB as a possible new tool to study the dark baryons in galaxies
Baryons constitute about 4% of our universe, but most of them are missing and
we do not know where and in what form they are hidden. This constitute the
so-called missing baryon problem. A possibility is that part of these baryons
are hidden in galactic halos. We show how the 7-year data obtained by the WMAP
satellite may be used to trace the halo of the nearby giant spiral galaxy M31.
We detect a temperature asymmetry in the M31 halo along the rotation direction
up to about 120 kpc. This could be the first detection of a galactic halo in
microwaves and may open a new way to probe hidden baryons in these relatively
less studied galactic objects using high accuracy CMB measurements.Comment: 8 pages, presented at the III Italian-Pakistani Workshop on

A Solvable Regime of Disorder and Interactions in Ballistic Nanostructures, Part I: Consequences for Coulomb Blockade
We provide a framework for analyzing the problem of interacting electrons in
a ballistic quantum dot with chaotic boundary conditions within an energy
(the Thouless energy) of the Fermi energy. Within this window we show that the
interactions can be characterized by Landau Fermi liquid parameters. When ,
the dimensionless conductance of the dot, is large, we find that the disordered
interacting problem can be solved in a saddle-point approximation which becomes
exact as (as in a large-N theory). The infinite theory shows a
transition to a strong-coupling phase characterized by the same order parameter
as in the Pomeranchuk transition in clean systems (a spontaneous
interaction-induced Fermi surface distortion), but smeared and pinned by
disorder. At finite , the two phases and critical point evolve into three
regimes in the plane -- weak- and strong-coupling regimes separated
by crossover lines from a quantum-critical regime controlled by the quantum
critical point. In the strong-coupling and quantum-critical regions, the
quasiparticle acquires a width of the same order as the level spacing
within a few 's of the Fermi energy due to coupling to collective
excitations. In the strong coupling regime if is odd, the dot will (if
isolated) cross over from the orthogonal to unitary ensemble for an
exponentially small external flux, or will (if strongly coupled to leads) break
time-reversal symmetry spontaneously.Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures. Very minor changes. We have clarified that we

Histone deacetylases as new therapy targets for platinum-resistant epithelial ovarian cancer
Introduction: In developed countries, ovarian cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. Due to the nonspecific symptomatology associated with the disease many patients with ovarian cancer are diagnosed late, which leads to significantly poorer prognosis. Apart from surgery and radiotherapy, a substantial number of ovarian cancer patients will undergo chemotherapy and platinum based agents are the mainstream first-line therapy for this disease. Despite the initial efficacy of these therapies, many women relapse; therefore, strategies for second-line therapies are required. Regulation of DNA transcription is crucial for tumour progression, metastasis and chemoresistance which offers potential for novel drug targets. Methods: We have reviewed the existing literature on the role of histone deacetylases, nuclear enzymes regulating gene transcription. Results and conclusion: Analysis of available data suggests that a signifant proportion of drug resistance stems from abberant gene expression, therefore HDAC inhibitors are amongst the most promising therapeutic targets for cancer treatment. Together with genetic testing, they may have a potential to serve as base for patient-adapted therapies
