Magnetic Nernst effect
The thermodynamics of irreversible processes in continuous media predicts the
existence of a Magnetic Nernst effect that results from a magnetic analog to
the Seebeck effect in a ferromagnet and magnetophoresis occurring in a
paramagnetic electrode in contact with the ferromagnet. Thus, a voltage that
has DC and AC components is expected across a Pt electrode as a response to the
inhomogeneous magnetic induction field generated by magnetostatic waves of an
adjacent YIG slab subject to a temperature gradient. The voltage frequency and
dependence on the orientation of the applied magnetic induction field are quite

A periodic microfluidic bubbling oscillator: insight into the stability of two-phase microflows
This letter describes a periodically oscillating microfoam flow. For constant
input parameters, both the produced bubble volume and the flow rate vary over a
factor two. We explicit the link between foam topology alternance and flow rate
changes, and construct a retroaction model where bubbles still present
downstream determine the volume of new bubbles, in agreement with experiment.
This gives insight into the various parameters important to maintain
monodispersity and at the same time shows a method to achieve controlled

Pions in the quark matter phase diagram
The relationship between mesonic correlations and quantum condensates in the
quark matter phase diagram is explored within a quantum field theoretical
approach of the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type. Mean-field values in the
scalar meson and diquark channels are order parameters signalling the
occurrence of quark condensates, entailing chiral symmetry breaking (chi SB)
and color superconductivity (2SC) in quark matter. We investigate the spectral
properties of scalar and pseudoscalar meson excitations in the phase diagram in
Gaussian approximation and show that outside the chi SB region where the pion
is a zero-width bound state, there are two regions where it can be considered
as a quasi-bound state with a lifetime exceeding that of a typical heavy-ion
collision fireball: (A) the high-temperature chi SB crossover region at low
densities and (B) the high-density color superconducting phase at temperatures

Grader Bias in Cattle Markets? Evidence from Iowa
Participants in U.S. markets for live cattle increasingly rely on federal grading standards to price slaughtered animals. This change is due to the growing prominence of モgridヤ pricing mechanisms that specify explicit premiums and discounts contingent on an animal's graded quality class. Although there have been recent changes in the way cattle are priced, the technology for sorting animals into quality classes has changed very little: human graders visually inspect each slaughtered carcass and call a モqualityヤ and モyieldヤgrade in a matter of seconds as the carcass passes on a moving trolley. There is anecdotal evidence of systematic bias in these called grades across time and regions within U.S. markets, and this paper empirically examines whether such claim is supported in a sample of loads delivered to three different Iowa packing plants during the years 2000-02. On the existence of stationary states during granular compaction
When submitted to gentle mechanical taps a granular packing slowly compacts
until it reaches a stationary state that depends on the tap characteristics.
The properties of such stationary states are experimentally investigated. The
influence of the initial state, taps properties and tapping protocol are
studied. The compactivity of the packings is determinated. Our results strongly
support the idea that the stationary states are genuine thermodynamic states.Comment: to be published in EPJE. The original publication will be available

Rotational Heisenberg Inequalities
Since their discovery in 1927, the Heisenberg Inequalities have become an
icon of quantum mechanics. Often inappropriately referred to as the Uncertainty
Principle, these inequalities relating the standard deviations of the position
and momentum observables to Planck's constant are one of the cornerstones of
the quantum formalism even if the physical interpretation of quantum mechanics
remains still open to controversy nowadays. The Heisenberg Inequalities
governing translational motion are well understood. However, the corresponding
inequalities pertaining to rotational motion have not been established so far.
To fill this gap, we present here the Rotational Heisenberg Inequalities
relating the standard deviations of the orientation axis and orbital angular
momentum observables of an isolated molecule. The reason for choosing this
system is that a molecule separated from its environment corresponds to a bound

Do inventories have an impact on price transmission? Evidence from the Canadian chicken industry
This paper investigates the influence of inventories in explaining the magnitude of price transmission. The empirical strategy consists of two distinct steps. First, the flexible non-linear framework of Hamilton is used to investigate the influence of inventories on price transmission. The procedure detects significant non-linearities and suggests that the price transmission elasticity is increasing in the level of the farm price and decreasing in the ratio of inventories to sales. This evidence leads to specific functional forms for the price transmission and target inventory equations which are estimated in a second step. The estimation procedure accounts for potential simultaneity between sales at the wholesale level and the wholesale price. Our results suggest that price transmission is lower (higher) when inventories are below (above) a target which is function of domestic sales.Asymmetric price transmission; inventories
Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations between two uniformly accelerated oscillators
We consider the quantum correlations, i.e. the entanglement, between two
systems uniformly accelerated with identical acceleration a in opposite Rindler
quadrants which have reached thermal equilibrium with the Unruh heat bath. To
this end we study an exactly soluble model consisting of two oscillators
coupled to a massless scalar field in 1+1 dimensions. We find that for some
values of the parameters the oscillators get entangled shortly after the moment
of closest approach. Because of boost invariance there are an infinite set of
pairs of positions where the oscillators are entangled. The maximal
entanglement between the oscillators is found to be approximately 1.4
entanglement bits.Comment: 11 page
