    Fine mapping the KLK3 locus on chromosome 19q13.33 associated with prostate cancer susceptibility and PSA levels

    Measurements of serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) protein levels form the basis for a widely used test to screen men for prostate cancer. Germline variants in the gene that encodes the PSA protein (KLK3) have been shown to be associated with both serum PSA levels and prostate cancer. Based on a resequencing analysis of a 56 kb region on chromosome 19q13.33, centered on the KLK3 gene, we fine mapped this locus by genotyping tag SNPs in 3,522 prostate cancer cases and 3,338 controls from five case–control studies. We did not observe a strong association with the KLK3 variant, reported in previous studies to confer risk for prostate cancer (rs2735839; P = 0.20) but did observe three highly correlated SNPs (rs17632542, rs62113212 and rs62113214) associated with prostate cancer [P = 3.41 × 10−4, per-allele trend odds ratio (OR) = 0.77, 95% CI = 0.67–0.89]. The signal was apparent only for nonaggressive prostate cancer cases with Gleason score <7 and disease stage <III (P = 4.72 × 10−5, per-allele trend OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.57–0.82) and not for advanced cases with Gleason score >8 or stage ≥III (P = 0.31, per-allele trend OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 0.90–1.40). One of the three highly correlated SNPs, rs17632542, introduces a non-synonymous amino acid change in the KLK3 protein with a predicted benign or neutral functional impact. Baseline PSA levels were 43.7% higher in control subjects with no minor alleles (1.61 ng/ml, 95% CI = 1.49–1.72) than in those with one or more minor alleles at any one of the three SNPs (1.12 ng/ml, 95% CI = 0.96–1.28) (P = 9.70 × 10−5). Together our results suggest that germline KLK3 variants could influence the diagnosis of nonaggressive prostate cancer by influencing the likelihood of biopsy

    Search for D∗(2007)0→μ+μ− in B−→π−μ+μ− decays

    The very rare D*(2007)(0) -&gt; mu(+)mu(-) decay is searched for by analysing B- -&gt; pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) decays. The analysis uses a sample of beauty mesons produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb(-1). The signal signature corresponds to simultaneous peaks in the mu(+)mu(-) and pi(-)mu(+)mu(-) invariant masses. No evidence for an excess of events over background is observed and an upper limit is set on the branching fraction of the decay at B(D*(2007)(0) -&gt; mu(+)mu(-)) &lt; 2.6x10(-8) at 90% confidence level. This is the first limit on the branching fraction of D*(2007)(0) -&gt; mu(+)mu(-) decays and the most stringent limit on D*(2007)(0) decays to leptonic final states. The analysis is the first search for a rare charm-meson decay exploiting production via beauty decays

    Measurement of Υ production in pp collisions at s√ = 5 TeV

    The production cross-sections of Υ mesons, namely Υ(1S), Υ(2S) and Υ(3S), in pp collisions at s√ = 5 TeV are measured with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.13 ± 0.18 pb−1 collected by the LHCb detector. The Υ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Υ → μ+μ−. Double differential cross-sections times branching fractions, as functions of the transverse momentum pT and the rapidity y of the Υ mesons, are measured in the range pT &lt; 20 GeV/c and 2.0 &lt; y &lt; 4.5. The results integrated over these pT and y ranges are σ(Y(1S))×B(Y(1S)→μ+μ−)=2101±33±83 pb, σ(Y(2S))×B(Y(2S)→μ+μ−)=526±20±21 pb, σ(Y(3S))×B(Y(3S)→μ+μ−)=242±16±10 pb, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The ratios of cross-sections between measurements of two different Υ states and between measurements at different centre-of-mass energies are determined. The nuclear modification factor of Υ(1S) at s√ = 5 TeV is updated as well using the directly measured cross-section results from this analysis

    Observation of a resonant structure near the Ds+DsD_s^+ D_s^- threshold in the B+Ds+DsK+B^+\to D_s^+ D_s^- K^+ decay

    An amplitude analysis of the B+Ds+DsK+B^+\to D_s^+ D_s^- K^+ decay is carried out to study for the first time its intermediate resonant contributions, using proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. A near-threshold peaking structure, referred to as X(3960)X(3960), is observed in the Ds+DsD_s^+ D_s^- invariant-mass spectrum with significance greater than 12 standard deviations. The mass, width and the quantum numbers of the structure are measured to be 3956±5±103956\pm5\pm10 MeV, 43±13±843\pm13\pm8 MeV and JPC=0++J^{PC}=0^{++}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The properties of the new structure are consistent with recent theoretical predictions for a state composed of ccˉssˉc\bar{c}s\bar{s} quarks. Evidence for an additional structure is found around 4140 MeV in the Ds+DsD_s^+ D_s^- invariant mass, which might be caused either by a new resonance with the 0++0^{++} assignment or by a J/ψϕDs+DsJ/\psi \phi\leftrightarrow D_s^+ D_s^- coupled-channel effect.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2022-018.html (LHCb public pages

    First Observation of a Doubly Charged Tetraquark and Its Neutral Partner

    A combined amplitude analysis is performed for the decays B0→D ̄D0s+π- and B+→D-Ds+π+, which are related by isospin symmetry. The analysis is based on data collected by the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The full data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb-1. Two new resonant states with masses of 2.908±0.011±0.020 GeV and widths of 0.136±0.023±0.013 GeV are observed, which decay to Ds+π+ and Ds+π- respectively. The former state indicates the first observation of a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state with minimal quark content [cs ̄ud ̄], and the latter state is a neutral tetraquark composed of [cs ̄ūd] quarks. Both states are found to have spin-parity of 0+, and their resonant parameters are consistent with each other, which suggests that they belong to an isospin triplet

    First observation and branching fraction measurement of the Λb0Dsp\Lambda_b^0\to D_s^- p decay

    The first observation of the Λb0Dsp\Lambda_b^0\to D_s^- p decay is presented using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13TeV{\sqrt{s}=13 \,\textrm{TeV}}, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6fb16\,\textrm{fb}^{-1}. Using the Λb0Λc+π\Lambda_b^0\to\Lambda_c^+\pi^- decay as the normalisation mode, the branching fraction of the Λb0Dsp\Lambda_b^0\to D_s^- p decay is measured to be B(Λb0Dsp)=(12.6±0.5±0.3±1.2)×106{\mathcal{B}(\Lambda_b^0\to D_s^- p)=(12.6 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.3 \pm 1.2 )\times 10^{-6}}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third due to uncertainties in the branching fractions of the Λb0Λc+π\Lambda_b^0\to\Lambda_c^+\pi^-, DsKK+πD_s^- \to K^-K^+\pi^- and Λc+pKπ+\Lambda_c^+\to p K^- \pi^+ decays.Comment: All figures and tables, along with any supplementary material and additional information, are available at https://cern.ch/lhcbproject/Publications/p/LHCb-PAPER-2022-038.html (LHCb public pages

    Search for the doubly heavy baryon Ξbc+\it{\Xi}_{bc}^{+} decaying to J/ψΞc+J/\it{\psi} \it{\Xi}_{c}^{+}

    A first search for the Ξbc+J/ψΞc+\it{\Xi}_{bc}^{+}\to J/\it{\psi}\it{\Xi}_{c}^{+} decay is performed by the LHCb experiment with a data sample of proton-proton collisions, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9fb19\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1} recorded at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13TeV13\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}. Two peaking structures are seen with a local (global) significance of 4.3(2.8)4.3\,(2.8) and 4.1(2.4)4.1\,(2.4) standard deviations at masses of 6571MeV ⁣/c26571\,\mathrm{Me\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^2 and 6694MeV ⁣/c26694\,\mathrm{Me\kern -0.1em V\!/}c^2, respectively. Upper limits are set on the Ξbc+\it{\Xi}_{bc}^{+} baryon production cross-section times the branching fraction relative to that of the Bc+J/ψDs+B_{c}^{+}\to J/\it{\psi} D_{s}^{+} decay at centre-of-mass energies of 8 and 13TeV13\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}, in the Ξbc+\it{\Xi}_{bc}^{+} and in the Bc+B_{c}^{+} rapidity and transverse-momentum ranges from 2.0 to 4.5 and 0 to 20GeV ⁣/c20\,\mathrm{Ge\kern -0.1em V\!/}c, respectively.     Measurement of lepton universality parameters in B+K++B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^- and B0K0+B^0\to K^{*0}\ell^+\ell^- decays

    A simultaneous analysis of the B+K++B^+\to K^+\ell^+\ell^- and B0K0+B^0\to K^{*0}\ell^+\ell^- decays is performed to test muon-electron universality in two ranges of the square of the dilepton invariant mass, q2q^2. The measurement uses a sample of beauty meson decays produced in proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 99 fb1\text{fb}^{-1}. A sequence of multivariate selections and strict particle identification requirements produce a higher signal purity and a better statistical sensitivity per unit luminosity than previous LHCb lepton universality tests using the same decay modes. Residual backgrounds due to misidentified hadronic decays are studied using data and included in the fit model. Each of the four lepton universality measurements reported is either the first in the given q2q^2 interval or supersedes previous LHCb measurements.     Angular analysis of D0π+πμ+μD^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-\mu^+\mu^- and D0K+Kμ+μD^0 \to K^+K^-\mu^+\mu^- decays and search for CPCP violation

    The first full angular analysis and an updated measurement of the decay-rate CPCP asymmetry of the D0π+πμ+μD^0 \to \pi^+\pi^-\mu^+\mu^- and D0K+Kμ+μD^0 \to K^+K^-\mu^+\mu^- decays are reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb1^{-1}. The full set of CPCP-averaged angular observables and their CPCP asymmetries are measured as a function of the dimuon invariant mass.
