    Subfactor realisation of modular invariants

We study the problem of realising modular invariants by braided subfactors and the related problem of classifying nimreps. We develop the fusion rule structure of these modular invariants. This structure is useful tool in the analysis of modular data from quantum double subfactors, particularly those of the double of cyclic groups, the symmetric group on 3 letters and the double of the subfactors with principal graph the extended Dynkin diagram D_5^(1). In particular for the double of S_3, 14 of the 48 modular modular invariants are nimless, and only 28 of the remaining 34 nimble invariants can be realised by subfactors

Can Brazilian Firms Survive the Chinese Challenge: Effects of Globalization on Markets, Strategies, and Performance

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to apply the structure-conduct-performance theory and the strategic fit concept to examine the effects of globalization on markets, strategies, and performance of business-to-consumer firms in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach – The paper takes a qualitative approach to answer the research questions. Top decision makers such as president, chief executive officer, chairman of the board, vice president, and director of the companies were interviewed. The elite approach to in-depth interviewing was followed to obtain reliable information from the decision makers. Findings – Findings indicate that globalization and especially the entry of Chinese firms significantly changed market contexts in Brazil. Brazilian executives responded to changes in market contexts by shifting from production to customer orientation, building brand equity, developing new products, and differentiating offerings. Overall, marketing performance of Brazilian firms was positive, but profitability suffered. Originality/value – The study contributes to the literature by showing that globalization has changed market contexts in Brazil by developing a new form of competition in which firms from emerging economies are now competing against each other. Findings from this study can provide useful theoretical and strategic insights into the behavior and performance of firms in other emerging markets

Orbit Representations from Linear mod 1 Transformations

We show that every point x0[0,1]x_0\in [0,1] carries a representation of a CC^*-algebra that encodes the orbit structure of the linear mod 1 interval map fβ,α(x)=βx+αf_{\beta,\alpha}(x)=\beta x +\alpha. Such CC^*-algebra is generated by partial isometries arising from the subintervals of monotonicity of the underlying map fβ,αf_{\beta,\alpha}. Then we prove that such representation is irreducible. Moreover two such of representations are unitarily equivalent if and only if the points belong to the same generalized orbit, for every α[0,1[\alpha\in [0,1[ and β1\beta\geq 1

Relativistic deuteron structure function at large Q^2

The deuteron deep inelastic unpolarized structure function F_2^D is calculated using the Wilson operator product expansion method. The long distance behaviour, related to the deuteron bound state properties, is evaluated using the Bethe-Salpeter equation with one particle on mass shell. The calculation of the ratio F_2^D/F_2^N is compared with other convolution models showing important deviations in the region of large x. The implications in the evaluation of the neutron structure function from combined data on deuterons and protons are discussed.Comment: 7 pages, 1 ps figure, RevTeX source, 1 tar.gz file.

    Get PDF
