A triazole containing co-polymer for use as an electron transport material in multilayer LEDs
We report investigations into a poly(1,20-(10,13-didecyl)distyrylbenzene-co-1,2-[p-ethylphenyl)]triazole) (TRIDSB) electron transport material and its incorporation into single and multilayer LEDs. Multilayer devices have been investigated with poly(p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and poly(2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) as hole transport layers (HTLs). The incorporation of the polymer into an ITO/PPV/TRIDSB/Al LED facilitates electron injection into the hole transporting emissive layer and results in a ten fold increase in the external quantum efficiency for electroluminescence (EL) of the PPV layer from 0.008% to 0.08-0.1%. In an ITO/I-MEHPPV/TRIDSB/Al device the corresponding increase in the quantum efficiency for EL from the I-MEHPPV is fifty fold, from 0.002% to between 0.06-0.11%. The polymer has been shown to be thermally stable with no glass transition temperature or melting point detected within the range 25-250 degrees C
Investigation of poly(2-methoxy-5-(2 '-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) prepared via a chloro precursor route
We report the characterisation of an insoluble MEHPPV (I-MEHPPV) prepared via a chloro precursor route. Optical absorption and emission spectra are discussed with reference to those of the common soluble variant. PL quantum efficiencies are also reported. Results obtained for single ITO/I-MEHPPV/A1 and double layer ITO/I-MEHPPV/electron transport layer (ETL)/A1 LED structures are discussed. Peak luminances of 800cd/m(2) are found for the multilayer device and a peak EL external quantum efficiency of 0.1 1% (power conversion efficiency of 1.5x10(-5)W/W) is obtained
Impact of facial conformation on canine health: Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome
The domestic dog may be the most morphologically diverse terrestrial mammalian species known to man; pedigree dogs are artificially selected for extreme aesthetics dictated by formal Breed Standards, and breed-related disorders linked to conformation are ubiquitous and diverse. Brachycephaly–foreshortening of the facial skeleton–is a discrete mutation that has been selected for in many popular dog breeds e.g. the Bulldog, Pug, and French Bulldog. A chronic, debilitating respiratory syndrome, whereby soft tissue blocks the airways, predominantly affects dogs with this conformation, and thus is labelled Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS). Despite the name of the syndrome, scientific evidence quantitatively linking brachycephaly with BOAS is lacking, but it could aid efforts to select for healthier conformations. Here we show, in (1) an exploratory study of 700 dogs of diverse breeds and conformations, and (2) a confirmatory study of 154 brachycephalic dogs, that BOAS risk increases sharply in a non-linear manner as relative muzzle length shortens. BOAS only occurred in dogs whose muzzles comprised less than half their cranial lengths. Thicker neck girths also increased BOAS risk in both populations: a risk factor for human sleep apnoea and not previously realised in dogs; and obesity was found to further increase BOAS risk. This study provides evidence that breeding for brachycephaly leads to an increased risk of BOAS in dogs, with risk increasing as the morphology becomes more exaggerated. As such, dog breeders and buyers should be aware of this risk when selecting dogs, and breeding organisations should actively discourage exaggeration of this high-risk conformation in breed standards and the show ring
Atomically Doped 2D Black Phosphorus for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells
Controlled functionalization of 2D black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets provides unique opportunities to tune their chemical, physical, and electronic properties. Herein, the preparation of single-atom nickel-doped BP (Ni–BP) sheets using a simple solution-based strategy is reported. Using the Ni–BP sheets as a passivation layer on top of a perovskite film leads to standard perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with improved performance. The standard n–i–p PSCs with the Ni–BP interlayer achieve maximum power conversion efficiencies of over 22%, with negligible hysteresis and a modest improvement in stability when subjected to different testing conditions. The perovskite films prepared with Ni–BP sheets-based passivation are found to have reduced defect densities as well as improved charge-transfer properties and carrier lifetimes. Density-functional theory calculations support the experimental results through showing that the atomic Ni-doping increases the work function of the BP interlayer, enabling better hole extraction, as well as increasing the surface hydrophobicity of the BP layer, hence reducing water sorption into the perovskite film
Temporal trends in hospitalisation for stroke recurrence following incident hospitalisation for stroke in Scotland
<p>Background: There are few studies that have investigated temporal trends in risk of recurrent stroke. The aim of this study was to examine temporal trends in hospitalisation for stroke recurrence following incident hospitalisation for stroke in Scotland during 1986 to 2001.</p>
<p>Methods: Unadjusted survival analysis of time to first event, hospitalisation for recurrent stroke or death, was undertaken using the cumulative incidence method which takes into account competing risks. Regression on cumulative incidence functions was used to model the temporal trends of first recurrent stroke with adjustment for age, sex, socioeconomic status and comorbidity. Complete five year follow-up was obtained for all patients. Restricted cubic splines were used to determine the best fitting relationship between the survival events and study year.</p>
<p>Results: There were 128,511 incident hospitalisations for stroke in Scotland between 1986 and 2001, 57,351 (45%) in men. A total of 13,835 (10.8%) patients had a recurrent hospitalisation for stroke within five years of their incident hospitalisation. Another 74,220 (57.8%) patients died within five years of their incident hospitalisation without first having a recurrent hospitalisation for stroke. Comparing incident stroke hospitalisations in 2001 with 1986, the adjusted risk of recurrent stroke hospitalisation decreased by 27%, HR = 0.73 95% CI (0.67 to 0.78), and the adjusted risk of death being the first event decreased by 28%, HR = 0.72 (0.70 to 0.75).</p>
<p>Conclusions: Over the 15-year period approximately 1 in 10 patients with an incident hospitalisation for stroke in Scotland went on to have a hospitalisation for recurrent stroke within five years. Approximately 6 in 10 patients died within five years without first having a recurrent stroke hospitalisation. Using hospitalisation and death data from an entire country over a 20-year period we have been able to demonstrate not only an improvement in survival following an incident stroke, but also a reduction in the risk of a recurrent event.</p>
Key challenges in simulated patient programs: An international comparative case study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The literature on simulated or standardized patient (SP) methodology is expanding. However, at the level of the program, there are several gaps in the literature. We seek to fill this gap through documenting experiences from four programs in Australia, Canada, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. We focused on challenges in SP methodology, faculty, organisational structure and quality assurance.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used a multiple case study method with cross-case synthesis. Over eighteen months during a series of informal and formal interactions (focused meetings and conference presentations) we documented key characteristics of programs and drew on secondary document sources.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Although programs shared challenges in SP methodology they also experienced differences. Key challenges common to programs included systematic quality assurance and the opportunity for research. There were differences in the terminology used to describe SPs, in their recruitment and training. Other differences reflected local conditions and demands in organisational structure, funding relationships with the host institution and national trends, especially in assessments.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This international case study reveals similarities and differences in SP methodology. Programs were highly contextualised and have emerged in response to local, institutional, profession/discipline and national conditions. Broader trends in healthcare education have also influenced development. Each of the programs experienced challenges in the same themes but the nature of the challenges often varied widely.</p
Breakpoint Associated with a novel 2.3 Mb deletion in the VCFS region of 22q11 and the role of Alu (SINE) in recurring microdeletions
BACKGROUND: Chromosome 22q11.2 region is highly susceptible to rearrangement, specifically deletions that give rise to a variety of genomic disorders including velocardiofacial or DiGeorge syndrome. Individuals with this 22q11 microdeletion syndrome are at a greatly increased risk to develop schizophrenia. METHODS: Genotype analysis was carried out on the DNA from a patient with the 22q11 microdeletion using genetic markers and custom primer sets to define the deletion. Bioinformatic analysis was performed for molecular characterization of the deletion breakpoint sequences in this patient. RESULTS: This 22q11 deletion patient was established to have a novel 2.3 Mb deletion with a proximal breakpoint located between genetic markers RH48663 and RH48348 and a distal breakpoint between markers D22S1138 and SHGC-145314. Molecular characterization of the sequences at the breakpoints revealed a 270 bp shared sequence of the breakpoint regions (SSBR) common to both ends that share >90% sequence similarity to each other and also to short interspersed nuclear elements/Alu elements. CONCLUSION: This Alu sequence like SSBR is commonly in the proximity of all known deletion breakpoints of 22q11 region and also in the low copy repeat regions (LCRs). This sequence may represent a preferred sequence in the breakpoint regions or LCRs for intra-chromosomal homologous recombination mechanisms resulting in common 22q11 deletion
Loss-of-Function Mutations in FRRS1L Lead to an Epileptic-Dyskinetic Encephalopathy
Glutamatergic neurotransmission governs excitatory signaling in the mammalian brain, and abnormalities of glutamate signaling have been shown to contribute to both epilepsy and hyperkinetic movement disorders. The etiology of many severe childhood movement disorders and epilepsies remains uncharacterized. We describe a neurological disorder with epilepsy and prominent choreoathetosis caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in FRRS1L, which encodes an AMPA receptor outer-core protein. Loss of FRRS1L function attenuates AMPA-mediated currents, implicating chronic abnormalities of glutamatergic neurotransmission in this monogenic neurological disease of childhood
Determinants of recovery from post-COVID-19 dyspnoea: analysis of UK prospective cohorts of hospitalised COVID-19 patients and community-based controls
Background The risk factors for recovery from COVID-19 dyspnoea are poorly understood. We investigated determinants of recovery from dyspnoea in adults with COVID-19 and compared these to determinants of recovery from non-COVID-19 dyspnoea. Methods We used data from two prospective cohort studies: PHOSP-COVID (patients hospitalised between March 2020 and April 2021 with COVID-19) and COVIDENCE UK (community cohort studied over the same time period). PHOSP-COVID data were collected during hospitalisation and at 5-month and 1-year follow-up visits. COVIDENCE UK data were obtained through baseline and monthly online questionnaires. Dyspnoea was measured in both cohorts with the Medical Research Council Dyspnoea Scale. We used multivariable logistic regression to identify determinants associated with a reduction in dyspnoea between 5-month and 1-year follow-up. Findings We included 990 PHOSP-COVID and 3309 COVIDENCE UK participants. We observed higher odds of improvement between 5-month and 1-year follow-up among PHOSP-COVID participants who were younger (odds ratio 1.02 per year, 95% CI 1.01–1.03), male (1.54, 1.16–2.04), neither obese nor severely obese (1.82, 1.06–3.13 and 4.19, 2.14–8.19, respectively), had no pre-existing anxiety or depression (1.56, 1.09–2.22) or cardiovascular disease (1.33, 1.00–1.79), and shorter hospital admission (1.01 per day, 1.00–1.02). Similar associations were found in those recovering from non-COVID-19 dyspnoea, excluding age (and length of hospital admission). Interpretation Factors associated with dyspnoea recovery at 1-year post-discharge among patients hospitalised with COVID-19 were similar to those among community controls without COVID-19.
