Homodyne extimation of quantum states purity by exploiting covariant uncertainty relation
We experimentally verify uncertainty relations for mixed states in the
tomographic representation by measuring the radiation field tomograms, i.e.
homodyne distributions. Thermal states of single-mode radiation field are
discussed in details as paradigm of mixed quantum state. By considering the
connection between generalised uncertainty relations and optical tomograms is
seen that the purity of the states can be retrieved by statistical analysis of
the homodyne data. The purity parameter assumes a relevant role in quantum
information where the effective fidelities of protocols depend critically on
the purity of the information carrier states. In this contest the homodyne
detector becomes an easy to handle purity-meter for the state on-line with a

Vitamin D deficiency in myotonic dystrophy type 1
Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a multisystemic
disorder affecting, among others, the endocrine
system, with derangement of steroid hormones functions.
Vitamin D is a steroid recognized for its role in calcium
homeostasis. In addition, vitamin D influences muscle
metabolism by genomic and non-genomic actions,
including stimulation of the insulin-like-growth-factor 1
(IGF1), a major regulator of muscle trophism. To verify
the presence of vitamin D deficit in DM1 and its possible
consequences, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D),
calcium, parathormone (PTH), and IGF1 levels were
measured in 32 DM1 patients and in 32 age-matched
controls. Bone mineral density (BMD) and proximal
muscle strength were also measured by DXA and a
handheld dynamometer, respectively. In DM1 patients,
25(OH)D levels were reduced compared to controls, and a
significant decrease of IGF1 was also found. 25(OH)D
levels inversely correlated with CTG expansion size,
while IGF1 levels and muscle strength directly correlated
with levels of 25(OH)D lower than 20 and 10 ng/ml,
respectively. A significantly higher percentage of DM1
patients presented hyperparathyroidism as compared to
controls. Calcium levels and BMD were comparable
between the two groups. Oral administration of cholecalciferol
in 11 DM1 patients with severe vitamin D deficiency
induced a normal increase of circulating 25(OH)D,
ruling out defects in intestinal absorption or hepatic
hydroxylation. DM1 patients show a reduction of circulating
25(OH)D, which correlates with genotype and may
influence IGF1 levels and proximal muscle strength. Oral
supplementation with vitamin D should be considered in
DM1 and might mitigate muscle weakness
Displacement power spectrum measurement of a macroscopic optomechanical system at thermal equilibrium
The mirror relative motion of a suspended Fabry-Perot cavity is studied in
the frequency range 3-10 Hz. The experimental measurements presented in this
paper, have been performed at the Low Frequency Facility, a high finesse
optical cavity 1 cm long suspended to a mechanical seismic isolation system
identical to that one used in the VIRGO experiment. The measured relative
displacement power spectrum is compatible with a system at thermal equilibrium
within its environmental. In the frequency region above 3 Hz, where seismic
noise contamination is negligible, the measurement distribution is stationary
and Gaussian, as expected for a system at thermal equilibrium. Through a simple
mechanical model it is shown that: applying the fluctuation dissipation theorem
the measured power spectrum is reproduced below 90 Hz and noise induced by

Measuring Gravito-magnetic Effects by Multi Ring-Laser Gyroscope
We propose an under-ground experiment to detect the general relativistic
effects due to the curvature of space-time around the Earth (de Sitter effect)
and to rotation of the planet (dragging of the inertial frames or
Lense-Thirring effect). It is based on the comparison between the IERS value of
the Earth rotation vector and corresponding measurements obtained by a
tri-axial laser detector of rotation. The proposed detector consists of six
large ring-lasers arranged along three orthogonal axes.
In about two years of data taking, the 1% sensitivity required for the
measurement of the Lense-Thirring drag can be reached with square rings of 6
side, assuming a shot noise limited sensitivity ().
The multi-gyros system, composed of rings whose planes are perpendicular to one
or the other of three orthogonal axes, can be built in several ways. Here, we
consider cubic and octahedron structures. The symmetries of the proposed
configurations provide mathematical relations that can be used to study the
stability of the scale factors, the relative orientations or the ring-laser
planes, very important to get rid of systematics in long-term measurements,

The GINGER Project and status of the ring-laser of LNGS
A ring-laser attached to the Earth measures the absolute angular velocity of the Earth summed
to the relativistic precessions, de Sitter and Lense-Thirring. GINGER (Gyroscopes IN GEneral
Relativity) is a project aiming at measuring the LenseThirring effect with a ground based detector;
it is based on an array of ring-lasers. Comparing the Earth angular velocity measured
by IERS and the measurement done with the GINGER array, the Lense-Thirring effect can be
evaluated. Compared to the existing space experiments, GINGER provides a local measurement,
not the averaged value and it is unnecessary to model the gravitational field. It is a proposal,
but it is not far from being a reality. In fact the GrossRing G of the Geodesy Observatory of
Wettzell has a sensitivity very close to the necessary one. G ofWettzell is part of the IERS system
which provides the measure of the Length Of the DAY (LOD); G provides information on the fast
component of LOD. In the last few years, a roadmap toward GINGER has been outlined. The
experiment G-GranSasso, financed by the INFN Commission II, is developing instrumentations
and tests along the roadmap of GINGER. In this short paper the main activities of G-GranSasso
and some results will be presented. The first results of GINGERino will be reported, GINGERino
is the large ring-laser installed inside LNGS and now in the commissioning phase. Ring-lasers
provide as well important informations for geophysics, in particular the rotational seismology,
which is an emerging field of science. GINGERino is one of the three experiments of common
interest between INFN and INGV
Hyperglycemia‐ and neuropathy‐induced changes in mitochondria within sensory nerves
Objective This study focused on altered mitochondrial dynamics as a potential mechanism for diabetic peripheral neuropathy ( DPN ). We employed both an in vitro sensory neuron model and an in situ analysis of human intraepidermal nerve fibers ( IENF s) from cutaneous biopsies to measure alterations in the size distribution of mitochondria as a result of hyperglycemia and diabetes, respectively. Methods Neurite‐ and nerve‐specific mitochondrial signals within cultured rodent sensory neurons and human IENF s were measured by employing a three‐dimensional visualization and quantification technique. Skin biopsies from distal thigh (DT) and distal leg (DL) were analyzed from three groups of patients; patients with diabetes and no DPN , patients with diabetes and confirmed DPN , and healthy controls. Results This analysis demonstrated an increase in mitochondria distributed within the neurites of cultured sensory neurons exposed to hyperglycemic conditions. Similar changes were observed within IENF s of the DT in DPN patients compared to controls. This change was represented by a significant shift in the size frequency distribution of mitochondria toward larger mitochondria volumes within DT nerves of DPN patients. There was a length‐dependent difference in mitochondria within IENF s. Distal leg IENF s from control patients had a significant shift toward larger volumes of mitochondrial signal compared to DT IENF s. Interpretation The results of this study support the hypothesis that altered mitochondrial dynamics may contribute to DPN pathogenesis. A new perturbative expansion of the time evolution operator associated with a quantum system
A novel expansion of the evolution operator associated with a -- in general,
time-dependent -- perturbed quantum Hamiltonian is presented. It is shown that
it has a wide range of possible realizations that can be fitted according to
computational convenience or to satisfy specific requirements. As a remarkable
example, the quantum Hamiltonian describing a laser-driven trapped ion is

Breakthrough pain in oncology: a longitudinal study.
Abstract
CONTEXT: Existing studies on breakthrough pain (BP) have reported different prevalence rates because of different settings, populations, and assessment methods. These studies have used cross-sectional designs, and the relationship of BP with analgesic treatment has not been evaluated.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to longitudinally assess BP in cancer patients admitted to oncology units.
METHODS: A consecutive sample of patients admitted to oncology centers was selected. At admission (T0), three months after admission (T3), and six months after admission (T6), data on background pain and BP were recorded. BP was assessed in terms of its intensity, duration, number of episodes, onset with movement, spontaneous relief after stopping activity, limitation of physical activity, and effectiveness of analgesics.
RESULTS: Three hundred two patients completed the study. At T0, T3, and T6, 39%, 38%, and 33% patients, respectively, had continuous pain (P=0.294). Pain intensity significantly decreased (P=0.004 and 0.027 at T3 and T6, respectively). Most patients had BP at T0 (87.1%), T3 (80.9%), and T6 (73.2%), and there was a significant decrease in the prevalence of BP over time (P=0.016). Of 149 patients with BP, pain on movement was recorded in 43.6%, 43.4%, and 32.4% at T0, T3, and T6, respectively (P=0.228). Pain spontaneously decreased or ceased when stopping physical activity in 66%, 56%, and 62% at T0, T3, and T6, respectively (P=0.537). Pain on movement strongly limited physical activity in most patients.
CONCLUSION: These data expand current information about BP and underline the need for a longitudinal assessment of a phenomenon that is invariably dependent on stage of disease, patient, and therapeutic factors
Triplet schedule of weekly 5-Fluorouracil and alternating irinotecan or oxaliplatin in advanced colorectal cancer: A dose-finding and phase II study
A weekly administration of alternating irinotecan or oxaliplatin associated to 5-Fluorouracil in advanced colorectal cancer was planned in order to evaluate a new schedule maintaining dose intensities of each drug as in double combinations and tolerability of the triplet association. The following weekly schedule was administered: irinotecan, days 1 and 15; oxaliplatin, days 8 and 22; 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) over 12-h (from 10:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m.) timed flat infusion, days 1-2, 8-9, 15-16 and 22-23, every 4 weeks. Dosefinding and phase II study were planned. Thirteen patients were enrolled in the dose-finding study and 23 in the phase II study. The recommended doses of our study are: irinotecan 160 mg/m2; oxaliplatin 80 mg/m2; 5-FU 900 mg/m2. The doselimiting toxicity was diarrhea (35% of patients) but no cases of febrile neutropenia were observed. In 30 patients assessable for response two complete (6.7%) and 18 partial (60%) responses were observed, for an overall response rate of 66.7% (α0.05, CI±7). The triplet association using this weekly alternating schedule is an active and well-tolerated outpatient regimen. Surgical removal of residual disease was considered in 5 patients and a radical resection was performed in 5 patients (14%)
