Ultraviolet and blue cathodoluminescence from cubic Y2O3 and Y2O3: Eu3+ generated in a transmission electron microscope
Herein we describe the investigation of transmission electron microscopeof non-doped Y2O3 and Y2O3 doped with Eu3+ in a transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with a spectrometer to detect cathodoluminescence from individual particles. Each submicron particle was made up of nanometre sized crystals. We found that these crystals showed a broad emission band at 353 nm upon bombardment with 200 keV or 80 keV electrons. Upon increasing the Eu3+ concentration from 0 to 2 mol% this UV/blue emission was gradually quenched: at Eu3+ concentrations >2 mol% no UV/blue emission was detected, only the well-known cathodoluminescence (CL) spectrum of Y2O3:Eu3+ could be recorded. This UV/blue emission has been attributed to the intrinsic luminescence of Y2O3 caused by self-trapped excitons. We found that the UV/blue luminescence was strongly temperature dependent and that the trap depth of the self-trapped excitons was 0.14 eV. The ratios of the spectral radiances of 5D1 → 7FJ and 5D0 → 7FJ (J = 0, 1...6) Eu3+ transitions in the CL-TEM spectra of Y2O3:Eu3+ at low Eu3+ concentrations was about a factor of 10 larger than those recorded at 15 keV. This phenomenon has been explained by absorption of the intrinsic luminescence of Y2O3 by Eu3+.The EPSRC and the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) funded the PURPOSE (TP11/MFE/6/I/AA129F; EPSRC TS/G000271/1), CONVERTED (JeS no. Inter-Subjectivity and Worker Self-Disclosure in Professional Relationships With Young People: A Psychosocial Study of Youth Violence and Desistance
This article argues that psychosocial theory can enhance understanding of intersubjective dynamics between workers and young people involved in crime and violence. After introducing some conceptual tools from psychoanalysis and post‐structural theory, a case study follows a worker's efforts to bring about a young man's desistance (including the worker's use of self‐disclosure) and how this is stymied by systemic failings in a homeless hostel in the UK. The article concludes that professional work in services targeted at young people with multiple support needs requires a deep sensibility to intersubjective and unconscious dynamics within professional relationships and organisations
The Category of Node-and-Choice Forms, with Subcategories for Choice-Sequence Forms and Choice-Set Forms
The literature specifies extensive-form games in many styles, and eventually
I hope to formally translate games across those styles. Toward that end, this
paper defines , the category of node-and-choice forms. The
category's objects are extensive forms in essentially any style, and the
category's isomorphisms are made to accord with the literature's small handful
of ad hoc style equivalences.
Further, this paper develops two full subcategories: for
forms whose nodes are choice-sequences, and for forms whose
nodes are choice-sets. I show that is "isomorphically enclosed"
in in the sense that each form is isomorphic to
a form. Similarly, I show that is
isomorphically enclosed in in the sense that each
form with no-absentmindedness is isomorphic to a
form. The converses are found to be almost immediate, and the
resulting equivalences unify and simplify two ad hoc style equivalences in
Kline and Luckraz 2016 and Streufert 2019.
Aside from the larger agenda, this paper already makes three practical
contributions. Style equivalences are made easier to derive by [1] a natural
concept of isomorphic invariance and [2] the composability of isomorphic
enclosures. In addition, [3] some new consequences of equivalence are

The effects of constructivist learning environments: A commentary
This special issue on the effects of constructivist learning environments is based on a symposium organized during the last annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association in Chicago. The studies in this issue not only provide an overview of the multitude of forms a constructivist learning environment can take, they also provide the reader with an overview of recent advances in this domain of research. The present discussion article provides a critical reflection on the studies in this special issue and tries to identify their prospects and limitations
Neoliberalisation and 'lad cultures' in higher education
This paper links HE neoliberalisation and ‘lad cultures’, drawing on interviews and focus groups with women students. We argue that retro-sexist ‘laddish’ forms of masculine competitiveness and misogyny have been reshaped by neoliberal rationalities to become modes of consumerist sexualised audit. We also suggest that neoliberal frameworks scaffold an individualistic and adversarial culture among young people that interacts with perceived threats to men’s privilege and intensifies attempts to put women in their place through misogyny and sexual harassment. Furthermore, ‘lad cultures’, sexism and sexual harassment in higher education may be invisibilised by institutions to preserve marketability in a neoliberal context. In response, we ask if we might foster dialogue and partnership between feminist and anti-marketisation politics
Predictive feedback control and Fitts' law
Fitts’ law is a well established empirical formula, known for encapsulating the “speed-accuracy trade-off”. For discrete, manual movements from a starting location to a target, Fitts’ law relates movement duration to the distance moved and target size. The widespread empirical success of the formula is suggestive of underlying principles of human movement control. There have been previous attempts to relate Fitts’ law to engineering-type control hypotheses and it has been shown that the law is exactly consistent with the closed-loop step-response of a time-delayed, first-order system. Assuming only the operation of closed-loop feedback, either continuous or intermittent, this paper asks whether such feedback should be predictive or not predictive to be consistent with Fitts law. Since Fitts’ law is equivalent to a time delay separated from a first-order system, known control theory implies that the controller must be predictive. A predictive controller moves the time-delay outside the feedback loop such that the closed-loop response can be separated into a time delay and rational function whereas a non- predictive controller retains a state delay within feedback loop which is not consistent with Fitts’ law. Using sufficient parameters, a high-order non-predictive controller could approximately reproduce Fitts’ law. However, such high-order, “non-parametric” controllers are essentially empirical in nature, without physical meaning, and therefore are conceptually inferior to the predictive controller. It is a new insight that using closed-loop feedback, prediction is required to physically explain Fitts’ law. The implication is that prediction is an inherent part of the “speed-accuracy trade-off”
Should Research Ethics Encourage the Production of Cost-Effective Interventions?
This project considers whether and how research ethics can contribute to the provision of cost-effective medical interventions. Clinical research ethics represents an underexplored context for the promotion of cost-effectiveness. In particular, although scholars have recently argued that research on less-expensive, less-effective interventions can be ethical, there has been little or no discussion of whether ethical considerations justify curtailing research on more expensive, more effective interventions. Yet considering cost-effectiveness at the research stage can help ensure that scarce resources such as tissue samples or limited subject popula- tions are employed where they do the most good; can support parallel efforts by providers and insurers to promote cost-effectiveness; and can ensure that research has social value and benefits subjects. I discuss and rebut potential objections to the consideration of cost-effectiveness in research, including the difficulty of predicting effectiveness and cost at the research stage, concerns about limitations in cost-effectiveness analysis, and worries about overly limiting researchers’ freedom. I then consider the advantages and disadvantages of having certain participants in the research enterprise, including IRBs, advisory committees, sponsors, investigators, and subjects, consider cost-effectiveness. The project concludes by qualifiedly endorsing the consideration of cost-effectiveness at the research stage. While incorporating cost-effectiveness considerations into the ethical evaluation of human subjects research will not on its own ensure that the health care system realizes cost-effectiveness goals, doing so nonetheless represents an important part of a broader effort to control rising medical costs
The pre-main sequence binary HK Ori : Spectro-astrometry and EXPORT data
In this paper we present multi-epoch observations of the pre-main sequence
binary HK Ori. These data have been drawn from the EXPORT database and are
complemented by high quality spectro-astrometric data of the system. The
spectroscopic data appear to be very well represented by a combination of an A
dwarf star spectrum superposed on a (sub-)giant G-type spectrum. The radial
velocity of the system is consistent with previous determinations, and does not
reveal binary motion, as expected for a wide binary. The spectral, photometric
and polarimetric properties and variability of the system indicate that the
active object in the system is a T Tauri star with UX Ori characteristics. The
spectro-astrometry of HK Ori is sensitive down to milli-arcsecond scales and
confirms the speckle interferometric results from Leinert et al. The
spectro-astrometry allows with fair certainty the identification of the active
star within the binary, which we suggest to be a G-type T Tauri star based on

Adolescent brain maturation and cortical folding: evidence for reductions in gyrification
Evidence from anatomical and functional imaging studies have highlighted major modifications of cortical circuits during adolescence. These include reductions of gray matter (GM), increases in the myelination of cortico-cortical connections and changes in the architecture of large-scale cortical networks. It is currently unclear, however, how the ongoing developmental processes impact upon the folding of the cerebral cortex and how changes in gyrification relate to maturation of GM/WM-volume, thickness and surface area. In the current study, we acquired high-resolution (3 Tesla) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data from 79 healthy subjects (34 males and 45 females) between the ages of 12 and 23 years and performed whole brain analysis of cortical folding patterns with the gyrification index (GI). In addition to GI-values, we obtained estimates of cortical thickness, surface area, GM and white matter (WM) volume which permitted correlations with changes in gyrification. Our data show pronounced and widespread reductions in GI-values during adolescence in several cortical regions which include precentral, temporal and frontal areas. Decreases in gyrification overlap only partially with changes in the thickness, volume and surface of GM and were characterized overall by a linear developmental trajectory. Our data suggest that the observed reductions in GI-values represent an additional, important modification of the cerebral cortex during late brain maturation which may be related to cognitive development
Correlation Between Mucosal IL-6 mRNA Expression Level and Virulence Factors of Helicobacter pylori in Iranian Adult Patients With Chronic Gastritis
Background: Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with gastritis and marked infiltration of the gastric mucosa by several cytokines secreting inflammatory cells that contribute to sustained local inflammation. In this study, we sought to examine IL-6 expression in H. pylori-infected and uninfected gastric mucosa and elucidate the implication in the pathogenesis of H. pylori-associated gastritis in human. Objectives: The current study aimed to determine mucosal IL-6 mRNA expression level and their correlation with virulence factors and the grade of chronic gastritis among H. pylori infected patients with chronic gastritis from Shahrekord, Iran. Patients and Methods: Mucosal IL-6 mRNA levels was measured by real-time PCR using endoscopic biopsies taken from the gastric antrum of 58 subjects infected with H. pylori and 44 uninfected subjects. Presence of vacA and cagA virulence factors was evaluated using PCR. Results: The IL-6 mRNA expression levels were significantly more elevated in H. pylori-positive patients than uninfected individuals and expression of this cytokine was independent from the virulence factors. There was a correlation between IL-6 expression level and the grade of chronic gastritis. Conclusions: Enhanced induction of IL-6 may be involved in the pathogenesis of H. pylon-associated gastritis
