Exploring social cognition in patients with apathy following acquired brain damage
BACKGROUND: Research on cognition in apathy has largely focused on executive functions. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have investigated the relationship between apathy symptoms and processes involved in social cognition. Apathy symptoms include attenuated emotional behaviour, low social engagement and social withdrawal, all of which may be linked to underlying socio-cognitive deficits. METHODS: We compared patients with brain damage who also had apathy symptoms against similar patients with brain damage but without apathy symptoms. Both patient groups were also compared against normal controls on key socio-cognitive measures involving moral reasoning, social awareness related to making judgements between normative and non-normative behaviour, Theory of Mind processing, and the perception of facial expressions of emotion. We also controlled for the likely effects of executive deficits and depressive symptoms on these comparisons. RESULTS: Our results indicated that patients with apathy were distinctively impaired in making moral reasoning decisions and in judging the social appropriateness of behaviour. Deficits in Theory of Mind and perception of facial expressions of emotion did not distinguish patients with apathy from those without apathy. CONCLUSION: Our findings point to a possible socio-cognitive profile for apathy symptoms and provide initial insights into how socio-cognitive deficits in patients with apathy may affect social functioning
The Dirichlet Casimir effect for theory in (3+1) dimensions: A new renormalization approach
We calculate the next to the leading order Casimir effect for a real scalar
field, within theory, confined between two parallel plates in three
spatial dimensions with the Dirichlet boundary condition. In this paper we
introduce a systematic perturbation expansion in which the counterterms
automatically turn out to be consistent with the boundary conditions. This will
inevitably lead to nontrivial position dependence for physical quantities, as a
manifestation of the breaking of the translational invariance. This is in
contrast to the usual usage of the counterterms in problems with nontrivial
boundary conditions, which are either completely derived from the free cases or
at most supplemented with the addition of counterterms only at the boundaries.
Our results for the massive and massless cases are different from those
reported elsewhere. Secondly, and probably less importantly, we use a
supplementary renormalization procedure, which makes the usage of any analytic

Ultra-wideband tightly coupled phased array antenna for low-frequency radio telescope
This paper introduces a novel approach to a broadband array design for a low frequency radio telescope. It presents a low profile ultra-wideband tightly coupled phased array antenna with integrated feedlines. The approach consists of applying broadband techniques to an array of capacitively coupled planar element pairs with an octagonal fractal geometry, backed by a ground plane. Designed as a low cost, low loss, dual-polarized wideband array, this antenna is optimised for operation between 50 and 250 MHz. Simulations have shown that the antenna has a wide-scanning ability with a low cross-polarisation level, over the operational broad frequency range.peer-reviewe

Particle-Antiparticle Mixing, epsilon_K, Delta Gamma_q, A_SL^q, A_CP(B_d -> psi K_S), A_CP(B_s -> psi phi) and B -> X_{s,d} gamma in the Littlest Higgs Model with T-Parity
We calculate a number of observables related to particle-antiparticle mixing
in the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT). The resulting effective
Hamiltonian for Delta F=2 transitions agrees with the one of Hubisz et al., but
our phenomenological analysis goes far beyond the one of these authors. In
particular, we point out that the presence of mirror fermions with new flavour
and CP-violating interactions allows to remove the possible Standard Model (SM)
discrepancy between the CP asymmetry S_{psi K_S} and large values of |V_ub| and
to obtain for the mass difference Delta M_s < (Delta M_s)_SM as suggested by
the recent result by the CDF collaboration. We also identify a scenario in
which simultaneously significant enhancements of the CP asymmetries S_{phi psi}
and A_SL^q relative to the SM are possible, while satisfying all existing
constraints, in particular from the B -> X_s gamma decay and A_CP(B -> X_s
gamma) that are presented in the LHT model here for the first time. In another
scenario the second, non-SM, value for the angle gamma=-(109+-6) from tree
level decays, although unlikely, can be made consistent with all existing data
with the help of mirror fermions. We present a number of correlations between
the observables in question and study the implications of our results for the
mass spectrum and the weak mixing matrix of mirror fermions. In the most
interesting scenarios, the latter one turns out to have a hierarchical

Does sticky blood predict a sticky end? Associations of blood viscosity, haematocrit and fibrinogen with mortality in the West of Scotland
There is increasing evidence that blood viscosity and its major determinants (haematocrit, plasma viscosity and fibrinogen) are associated with an increased risk of incident cardiovascular events; however, their associations with mortality are not established. We therefore studied the associations of these variables with cardiovascular events and total mortality in 1238 men and women aged 25-64 years, followed for 13 years in the first North Glasgow MONICA (MONItoring CArdiovascular disease) survey and West of Scotland centres in the Scottish Heart Health Study. After adjustment for age and sex, increasing whole blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, haematocrit and fibrinogen (analysed by both von Clauss and heat precipitation assays) were significantly associated with mortality. Only the association for fibrinogen (von Clauss assay) remained significant after adjustment for major cardiovascular risk factors. We conclude that clottable fibrinogen may be independently associated with mortality. However, the significance of this association, and the extent to which viscosity is associated with mortality, remain to be established in larger studies and meta-analyses
