    Carbon radio recombination lines from gigahertz to megahertz frequencies towards Orion A

    Context. The combined use of carbon radio recombination lines (CRRLs) and the 158 μ\mum-[CII] line is a powerful tool for the study of the energetics and physical conditions (e.g., temperature and density) of photodissociation regions (PDRs). However, there are few observational studies that exploit this synergy. Aims. Here we explore the relation between CRRLs and the 158 μ\mum-[CII] line in light of new observations and models. Methods. We present new and existing observations of CRRLs in the frequency range 0.15--230 GHz with ALMA, VLA, the GBT, Effelsberg 100m, and LOFAR towards Orion~A (M42). We complement these observations with SOFIA observations of the 158 μ\mum-[CII] line. We studied two PDRs: the foreground atomic gas, known as the Veil, and the dense PDR between the HII region and the background molecular cloud. Results. In the Veil we are able to determine the gas temperature and electron density, which we use to measure the ionization parameter and the photoelectric heating efficiency. In the dense PDR, we are able to identify a layered PDR structure at the surface of the molecular cloud to the south of the Trapezium cluster. There we find that the radio lines trace the colder portion of the ionized carbon layer, the C+^{+}/C/CO interface. By modeling the emission of the 158158~μ\mum-[CII] line and CRRLs as arising from a PDR we derive a thermal pressure >5×107>5\times10^{7} K cm3^{-3} and a radiation field G0105G_{0}\approx10^{5} close to the Trapezium. Conclusions. This work provides additional observational support for the use of CRRLs and the 158 μ\mum-[CII] line as complementary tools to study dense and diffuse PDRs, and highlights the usefulness of CRRLs as probes of the C+^{+}/C/CO interface.Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    A swollen phase observed between the liquid-crystalline phase and the interdigitated phase induced by pressure and/or adding ethanol in DPPC aqueous solution

    A swollen phase, in which the mean repeat distance of lipid bilayers is larger than the other phases, is found between the liquid-crystalline phase and the interdigitated gel phase in DPPC aqueous solution. Temperature, pressure and ethanol concentration dependences of the structure were investigated by small-angle neutron scattering, and a bending rigidity of lipid bilayers was by neutron spin echo. The nature of the swollen phase is similar to the anomalous swelling reported previously. However, the temperature dependence of the mean repeat distance and the bending rigidity of lipid bilayers are different. This phase could be a precursor to the interdigitated gel phase induced by pressure and/or adding ethanol.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    The free volume of poly(vinyl methylether) as computed in a wide temperature range and at length scales up to the nanoregion

    14 páginas, 12 figuras.In the present work, we focus on the free volume evaluations from different points of view, including the aspect of probe sizes, temperature, and cavity threshold. The free volume structure is analyzed on structures of poly(vinyl methylether) prepared by fully atomistic molecular dynamics. At first, the temperature behavior of an overall free volume and a free volume separated into individual cavities is shown. The origin of large free volume cavities is explained. A complex view on the cavity number is provided, while a complicated behavior previously observed is now explained. The number of large cavities remained almost constant with the temperature. Oppositely, the number of small cavities related to the atomic packing changes with temperature in a distinct way for glassy and supercooled regions. The cavity number maxima determine a percolation threshold according to percolation theory. The change in polymer properties with temperature can be related to a percolation of the free volume according to the free volume theory, when proper probe radii ∼0.8 Å are used for its observation. A construction of probabilistic distribution of free volume sizes is suggested. The free volume distributions reported here are bimodal. The bimodal character is explained by two different packings—atomic and segmental—forming a prepeak and a main peak on the distribution. Further attention is dedicated to comparisons of the computed free volume sizes and the ortho-positronium (o-Ps) lifetimes. The prepeak of the free volume distribution is probably unseen by o-Ps because of a cavity threshold limit. The effect of the shape factor on the computed o-Ps lifetimes is tested. The quasicavities obtained by redistributing the free volume maintain the ratio of the main dimensions with temperature. Finally, novel data on the cavity environment are provided, while it is suggested how these can be useful with the recent developments in the positron annihilation methods. The coordination number of large cavities with the polymer segments is around 1, as predicted in the free volume theory. Similarly to the percolation and the cavity number, the coordination number exhibits a change when explored by a suitable probe radius ∼0.8 Å.     'A habitual disposition to the good': on reason, virtue and realism

    Amidst the crisis of instrumental reason, a number of contemporary political philosophers including Jürgen Habermas have sought to rescue the project of a reasonable humanism from the twin threats of religious fundamentalism and secular naturalism. In his recent work, Habermas defends a post-metaphysical politics that aims to protect rationality against encroachment while also accommodating religious faith within the public sphere. This paper contends that Habermas’ post-metaphysical project fails to provide a robust alternative either to the double challenge of secular naturalism and religious fundamentalism or to the ruthless instrumentalism that underpins capitalism. By contrast with Habermas and also with the ‘new realism’ of contemporary political philosophers such as Raymond Geuss or Bernard Williams, realism in the tradition of Plato and Aristotle can defend reason against instrumental rationality and blind belief by integrating it with habit, feeling and even faith. Such metaphysical–political realism can help develop a politics of virtue that goes beyond communitarian thinking by emphasising plural modes of association (not merely ‘community’), substantive ties of sympathy and the importance of pursuing goodness and mutual flourishing

    Heterodinuclear ruthenium(ii)-cobalt(iii) complexes have been prepared as part of investigations into a new approach to selective cancer treatment. A cobalt(iii) centre bearing amine ligands, which serve as models for cytotoxic nitrogen mustard ligands, is connected by a bridging ligand to a ruthenium(ii)-polypyridyl moiety. Upon excitation of the ruthenium centre by visible light, electron transfer to the cobalt(iii) centre results in reduction to cobalt(ii) and consequent release of its ligands. We have synthesised several such structures and demonstrated their ability to release ligands upon excitation of the ruthenium centre by visible light

    The meta-crisis of secular capitalism

    The current global economic crisis concerns the way in which contemporary capitalism has turned to financialisation as a double cure for both a falling rate of profit and a deficiency of demand. Although this turning is by no means unprecedented, policies of financialisation have depressed demand (in part as a result of the long-term stagnation of average wages) while at the same time not proving adequate to restore profits and growth. This paper argues that the current crisis is less the ‘normal’ one that has to do with a constitutive need to balance growth of abstract wealth with demand for concrete commodities. Rather, it marks a meta-crisis of capitalism that is to do with the difficulties of sustaining abstract growth as such. This meta-crisis is the tendency at once to abstract from the real economy of productive activities and to reduce everything to its bare materiality. By contrast with a market economy that binds material value to symbolic meaning, a capitalist economy tends to separate matter from symbol and reduce materiality to calculable numbers representing ‘wealth’. Such a conception of wealth rests on the aggregation of abstract numbers that cuts out all the relational goods and the ‘commons’ on which shared prosperity depends
