Big hART at John Northcott Estate: Community, Health and the Arts

    Get PDF
This paper considers the work of Big hART, a social impact of the Arts company, in their residency entitled Northcott Narratives over three and half years at John Northcott Estate, a public housing estate in Sydney. During this time Big hART used arts practice to engage tenants, strengthen their creative dispositions, and build relationships between tenants and a range of different communities. Northcott Narratives used a variety of multi-modal forms with tenants to inquire into, and then express ideas in relation to issues that confront them. These ideas are presented as social policy recommendations. The power and benefits of this form of arts practice along with the tensions and challenges are revealed. The paper adds to the developing discourse in relation to community cultural development

A simultaneous spin/eject mechanism for aerospace payloads

    Get PDF
A simultaneous spin/eject mechanism was developed for aerospace applications requiring a compact, passive device which would accommodate payload support and controlled-release functions, and which would provide a highly accurate spin-ejection motion to the payload. The mechanism satisfied the requirements and is adaptable to other deployment applications

The analysis of user behaviour of a network management training tool using a neural network

    Get PDF
A novel method for the analysis and interpretation of data that describes the interaction between trainee network managers and a network management training tool is presented. A simulation based approach is currently being used to train network managers, through the use of a simulated network. The motivation is to provide a tool for exposing trainees to a life like situation without disrupting a live network. The data logged by this system describes the detailed interaction between trainee network manager and simulated network. The work presented here provides an analysis of this interaction data that enables an assessment of the capabilities of the trainee network manager as well as an understanding of how the network management tasks are being approached. A neural network architecture is implemented in order to perform an exploratory data analysis of the interaction data. The neural network employs a novel form of continuous self-organisation to discover key features in the data and thus provide new insights into the learning and teaching strategies employed

A General Expression for Symmetry Factors of Feynman Diagrams

    Get PDF
The calculation of the symmetry factor corresponding to a given Feynman diagram is well known to be a tedious problem. We have derived a simple formula for these symmetry factors. Our formula works for any diagram in scalar theory (ϕ3\phi^3 and ϕ4\phi^4 interactions), spinor QED, scalar QED, or QCD.Comment: RevTex 11 pages with 10 figure

Orbital thermal analysis of lattice structured spacecraft using color video display techniques

    Get PDF
A color video display technique is demonstrated as a tool for rapid determination of thermal problems during the preliminary design of complex space systems. A thermal analysis is presented for the lattice-structured Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) spacecraft at 32 points in a baseline non Sun-synchronous (60 deg inclination) orbit. Large temperature variations (on the order of 150 K) were observed on the majority of the members. A gradual decrease in temperature was observed as the spacecraft traversed the Earth's shadow, followed by a sudden rise in temperature (100 K) as the spacecraft exited the shadow. Heating rate and temperature histories of selected members and color graphic displays of temperatures on the spacecraft are presented

Experimental demonstration of a Rydberg-atom beam splitter

    Get PDF
Inhomogeneous electric fields generated above two-dimensional electrode structures have been used to transversely split beams of helium Rydberg atoms into pairs of spatially separated components. The atomic beams had initial longitudinal speeds of between 1700 and 2000 m/s and were prepared in Rydberg states with principle quantum number n=52n=52 and electric dipole moments of up to 8700 D by resonance-enhanced two-color two-photon laser excitation from the metastable 1s2s 3^3S1_1 level. Upon exiting the beam splitter the ensembles of Rydberg atoms were separated by up to 15.6 mm and were detected by pulsed electric field ionization. Effects of amplitude modulation of the electric fields of the beam splitter were shown to cause particle losses through transitions into unconfined Rydberg-Stark states.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
