The Plane of the Kuiper Belt
We present a robust method for measuring the effective plane of the Kuiper belt. The derived plane has an inclination with respect to the ecliptic of 1º.86 and an ascending node of 81º.6, with a 1 σ error in pole position of the plane of 0º.37. The plane of the Kuiper belt is inconsistent with the invariable plane, the plane of Jupiter, and the plane of Neptune at the greater than 3 σ level. Using linear secular perturbation theory, we show that the plane of the Kuiper belt is expected to oscillate about the position of the invariable plane with a period of 1.9 million years and an amplitude of 1º.2. The present predicted position of the plane of the Kuiper belt has an inclination with respect to the ecliptic of 1º.74 and an ascending node of 86º.7, within 0º.20 of our measured position
Search for surviving companions in type Ia supernova remnants
The nature of the progenitor systems of type~Ia supernovae is still unclear.
One way to distinguish between the single-degenerate scenario and
double-degenerate scenario for their progenitors is to search for the surviving
companions. Using a technique that couples the results from multi-dimensional
hydrodynamics simulations with calculations of the structure and evolution of
main-sequence- and helium-rich surviving companions, the color and magnitude of
main-sequence- and helium-rich surviving companions are predicted as functions
of time. The surviving companion candidates in Galactic type~Ia supernova
remnants and nearby extragalactic type~Ia supernova remnants are discussed. We
find that the maximum detectable distance of main-sequence surviving companions
(helium-rich surviving companions) is ~Mpc (~Mpc), if the
apparent magnitude limit is 27 in the absence of extinction, suggesting that
the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds and the Andromeda Galaxy are excellent
environments in which to search for surviving companions. However, only five
Ia~SNRs have been searched for surviving companions, showing little support for
the standard channels in the singe-degenerate scenario. To better understand
the progenitors of type Ia supernovae, we encourage the search for surviving
companions in other nearby type Ia supernova remnants.Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures, and 2 tables. Accepted for publication in Ap
Iodine and pregnancy – a UK cross-sectional survey of dietary intake, knowledge and awareness
Iodine is a key component of the thyroid hormones, which are critical for healthy growth, development and metabolism. The UK population is now classified as mildly iodine-insufficient. Adequate levels of iodine during pregnancy are essential for fetal neurodevelopment, and mild iodine deficiency is linked to developmental impairments. In the absence of prophylaxis in the UK, awareness of nutritional recommendations during pregnancy would empower mothers to make the right dietary choices leading to adequate iodine intake. The present study aimed to: estimate mothers' dietary iodine intake in pregnancy (using a FFQ); assess awareness of the importance of iodine in pregnancy with an understanding of existing pregnancy dietary and lifestyle recommendations with relevance for iodine; examine the level of confidence in meeting adequate iodine intake. A cross-sectional survey was conducted and questionnaires were distributed between August 2011 and February 2012 on local (Glasgow) and national levels (online electronic questionnaire); 1026 women, UK-resident and pregnant or mother to a child aged up to 36 months participated in the study. While self-reported awareness about general nutritional recommendations during pregnancy was high (96 %), awareness of iodine-specific recommendations was very low (12 %), as well as the level of confidence of how to achieve adequate iodine intake (28 %). Median pregnancy iodine intake, without supplements, calculated from the FFQ, was 190 μg/d (interquartile range 144–256μg/d), which was lower than that of the WHO's recommended intake for pregnant women (250 μg/d). Current dietary recommendations in pregnancy, and their dissemination, are found not to equip women to meet the requirements for iodine intake
Simulations of the symbiotic recurrent nova V407 Cyg. I. Accretion and shock evolutions
The shock interaction and evolution of nova ejecta with a wind from a red
giant star in a symbiotic binary system are investigated via three-dimensional
hydrodynamics simulations. We specifically model the March 2010 outburst of the
symbiotic recurrent nova V407~Cygni from the quiescent phase to its eruption
phase. The circumstellar density enhancement due to wind-white dwarf
interaction is studied in detail. It is found that the density-enhancement
efficiency depends on the ratio of the orbital speed to the red giant wind
speed. Unlike another recurrent nova, RS~Ophiuchi, we do not observe a strong
disk-like density enhancement, but instead observe an aspherical density
distribution with higher density in the equatorial plane than at
the poles. To model the 2010 outburst, we consider several physical parameters,
including the red giant mass loss rate, nova eruption energy, and ejecta mass.
A detailed study of the shock interaction and evolution reveals that the
interaction of shocks with the red giant wind generates strong Rayleigh-Taylor
instabilities. In addition, the presence of the companion and circumstellar
density enhancement greatly alter the shock evolution during the nova phase.
The ejecta speed after sweeping out most of the circumstellar medium decreases
to km-s, depending on model, which is consistent with the
observed extended redward emission in [N~II] lines in April 2011.Comment: ApJ, In Press. Simulation Animation: https://youtu.be/g5Nu7vDfCO
Higher Spins and Matter Interacting in Dimension Three
The spectrum of Prokushkin--Vasiliev Theory is puzzling in light of the
Gaberdiel--Gopakumar conjecture because it generically contains an additional
sector besides higher-spin gauge and scalar fields. We find the unique
truncation of the theory avoiding this problem to order 2 in perturbations
around AdS. The second-order backreaction on the physical gauge sector
induced by the scalars is computed explicitly. The cubic action for the
physical fields is determined completely. We comment on a different higher-spin
theory without such additional fields at .Comment: 55 pages + appendices, LaTex. Final version to appear in JHE
Reactively sputtered RuO2 diffusion barriers
The thermal stability of reactively sputtered RuO2 films is investigated from the point of view of their application as diffusion barriers in silicon contact metallizations with an Al overlayer. Backscattering spectra of Si/RuO2/Al samples and electrical measurements on shallow junction diodes with Si/TiSi2.3/RuO2/Al contacts both show that RuO2 films are effective diffusion barriers between Al and Si for 30-min annealing at temperatures as high as 600°C
