reconstructed and slow pion from the decay, enhances sensitivity. The observed branching fractions are
, , and , where the first error is statistical,
the second systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty in the branching fraction. The measured longitudinal
polarization, , is consistent with

The role of ocelli in cockroach optomotor performance
Insect ocelli are relatively simple eyes that have been assigned various functions not related to pictorial vision. In some
species they function as sensors of ambient light intensity, from which information is relayed to various parts of the nervous
system, e.g., for the control of circadian rhythms. In this work we have investigated the possibility that the ocellar light
stimulation changes the properties of the optomotor performance of the cockroach Periplaneta americana. We used a virtual
reality environment where a panoramic moving image is presented to the cockroach while its movements are recorded with
a trackball. Previously we have shown that the optomotor reaction of the cockroach persists down to the intensity of moonless
night sky, equivalent to less than 0.1 photons/s being absorbed by each compound eye photoreceptor. By occluding the
compound eyes, the ocelli, or both, we show that the ocellar stimulation can change the intensity dependence of the optomotor
reaction, indicating involvement of the ocellar visual system in the information processing of movement. We also measured
the cuticular transmission, which, although relatively large, is unlikely to contribute profoundly to ocellar function, but may
be significant in determining the mean activity level of completely blinded cockroaches
Insights into Candida tropicalis nosocomial infections and virulence factors
Candida tropicalis is considered the first or the second non-Candida albicans Candida (NCAC) species most frequently isolated from candidosis, mainly in patients admitted in intensive care units (ICUs), especially with cancer, requiring prolonged catheterization, or receiving broad-spectrum antibiotics. The proportion of candiduria and candidemia caused by C. tropicalis varies widely with geographical area and patient group. Actually, in certain countries, C. tropicalis is more prevalent, even compared with C. albicans or other NCAC species. Although prophylactic treatments with fluconazole cause a decrease in the frequency of candidosis caused by C. tropicalis, it is increasingly showing a moderate level of fluconazole resistance. The propensity of C. tropicalis for dissemination and the high mortality associated with its infections might be strongly related to the potential of virulence factors exhibited by this species, such as adhesion to different host surfaces, biofilm formation, infection and dissemination, and enzymes secretion. Right drug, right patient, right time: aspiration or future promise for biologics in rheumatoid arthritis?
Individualising biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) to maximise outcomes and deliver safe and cost-effective care is a key goal in the management of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Investigation to identify predictive tools of bDMARD response is a highly active and prolific area of research. In addition to clinical phenotyping, cellular and molecular characterisation of synovial tissue and blood in patients with RA, using different technologies, can facilitate predictive testing. This narrative review will summarise the literature for the available bDMARD classes and focus on where progress has been made. We will also look ahead and consider the increasing use of ‘omics’ technologies, the potential they hold as well as the challenges, and what is needed in the future to fully realise our ambition of personalised bDMARD treatment
Management of intra-abdominal infections : recommendations by the WSES 2016 consensus conference
This paper reports on the consensus conference on the management of intra-abdominal infections (IAIs) which was held on July 23, 2016, in Dublin, Ireland, as a part of the annual World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) meeting. This document covers all aspects of the management of IAIs. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation recommendation is used, and this document represents the executive summary of the consensus conference findings.Peer reviewe
Genomic characterization, high-density mapping and anchoring of DArT markers to the reference genome of Eucalyptus
Genetic linkage maps have been essential tools to examine the inheritance of qualitative and quantitative traits, to carry out comparative mapping and to provide markers for molecular breeding applications. Linkage maps for species of Eucalyptus have been reported for several pedigrees using different molecular marker technologies [1]. However improved marker density, throughput and transferability across species are necessary to increase resolution of current maps for a variety of genomic applications. We report the development of a high density linkage map for Eucalyptus based on microsatellites and DArT (Diversity Arrays Technology) markers generated by a standardized genotyping microarray [2]. DNA probes that constitute the DArT microarray were sequenced and positioned on the reference Eucalyptus genome providing information about their sequence content, their distribution relative to annotated genes as well as the relationship between physical and recombination distance in the Eucalyptus genome. Gigantic retroperitoneal hematoma as a complication of anticoagulation therapy with heparin in therapeutic doses: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage is a distinct clinical entity that can present as a rare life-threatening event characterized by sudden onset of bleeding into the retroperitoneal space, occurring in association with bleeding disorders, intratumoral bleeding, or ruptures of any retroperitoneal organ or aneurysm. The spontaneous form is the most infrequent retroperitoneal hemorrhage, causing significant morbidity and representing a diagnostic challenge.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a patient with coronary artery disease who presented with transient ischemic attack, in whom anticoagulant therapy with heparin precipitated a massive spontaneous atraumatic retroperitoneal hemorrhage (with international normalized ratio 2.4), which was treated conservatively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Delay in diagnosis is potentially fatal and high clinical suspicion remains crucial. Finally, it is a matter of controversy whether retroperitoneal hematomas should be surgically evacuated or conservatively treated and the final decision should be made after taking into consideration patient's general condition and the possibility of permanent femoral or sciatic neuropathy due to compression syndrome.</p
Effect of sex and fatigue on single leg squat kinematics in healthy young adults
Background:
The single-leg squat (SLS) test is widely used in screening for musculoskeletal injury risk. Little is known, however, of lower limb, pelvis, and trunk kinematics of SLS performance or the effect of sex and fatigue. Our aim was to determine sex differences and the influence of fatigue on SLS kinematics in healthy young adults.
Methods:
We recruited 60 healthy men and women between the ages of 20 and 40 years. Three-dimensional kinematic data was collected for SLSs with a ten-camera VICON motion analysis system (Oxford Metrics, UK) before and after a lower limb fatiguing exercise regime. One-way ANCOVA was used to make sex comparisons of kinematic parameters and repeated measures ANOVA was used to determine the effect of fatigue and the interaction with sex.
Results:
30 men (25.6 ± 4.8 years) and 30 women (25.1 ± 3.8 years) volunteered to participate. Peak pelvic rotation (3.9 ± 4.1 vs. 7.7 ± 6.2 deg, P = 0.03), peak hip internal rotation (−1.8 ± 5.7 vs. 3.0 ± 7.3 deg, P = 0.02), hip adduction range (11.7 ± 4.8 vs. 18.3 ± 6.7 deg, P = 0.004), and hip rotation range (10.7 ± 3.9 vs. 13.0 ± 4.2 deg, P = 0.04) were smaller for men than for women. Likewise, distance of mediolateral knee motion (180 ± 51 vs. 227 ± 50 mm, P = 0.001) was shorter for men than for women. The kinematic response to fatigue was an increase in trunk flexion, lateral flexion and rotation, an increase in pelvic tilt, obliquity and rotation, and an increase in hip flexion and adduction range (P ≤0.05).
Conclusions:
Sex differences in SLS kinematics appear to apply only at the hip, knee, and pelvis and not at the trunk. Fatiguing exercise, however, produces changes at the trunk and pelvis with little effect on the knee.Griffith Health, School of Allied Health SciencesFull Tex
Description of Hymenolepis microstoma (Nottingham strain): a classical tapeworm model for research in the genomic era
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p><it>Hymenolepis microstoma </it>(Dujardin, 1845) Blanchard, 1891, the mouse bile duct tapeworm, is a rodent/beetle-hosted laboratory model that has been used in research and teaching since its domestication in the 1950s. Recent characterization of its genome has prompted us to describe the specific strain that underpins these data, anchoring its identity and bringing the 150+ year-old original description up-to-date.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Morphometric and ultrastructural analyses were carried out on laboratory-reared specimens of the 'Nottingham' strain of <it>Hymenolepis microstoma </it>used for genome characterization. A contemporary description of the species is provided including detailed illustration of adult anatomy and elucidation of its taxonomy and the history of the specific laboratory isolate.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Our work acts to anchor the specific strain from which the <it>H. microstoma </it>genome has been characterized and provides an anatomical reference for researchers needing to employ a model tapeworm system that enables easy access to all stages of the life cycle. We review its classification, life history and development, and briefly discuss the genome and other model systems being employed at the beginning of a genomic era in cestodology.</p
