    Staggered fermions and chiral symmetry breaking in transverse lattice regulated QED

    Staggered fermions are constructed for the transverse lattice regularization scheme. The weak perturbation theory of transverse lattice non-compact QED is developed in light-cone gauge, and we argue that for fixed lattice spacing this theory is ultraviolet finite, order by order in perturbation theory. However, by calculating the anomalous scaling dimension of the link fields, we find that the interaction Hamiltonian becomes non-renormalizable for g2(a)>4πg^2(a) > 4\pi, where g(a)g(a) is the bare (lattice) QED coupling constant. We conjecture that this is the critical point of the chiral symmetry breaking phase transition in QED. Non-perturbative chiral symmetry breaking is then studied in the strong coupling limit. The discrete remnant of chiral symmetry that remains on the lattice is spontaneously broken, and the ground state to lowest order in the strong coupling expansion corresponds to the classical ground state of the two-dimensional spin one-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet.Comment: 30 pages, UFIFT-HEP-92-1

    Isospin splitting in heavy baryons and mesons

    A recent general analysis of light-baryon isospin splittings is updated and extended to charmed baryons. The measured Σc\Sigma_c and Ξc\Xi_c splittings stand out as being difficult to understand in terms of two-body forces alone.     Religion as practices of attachment and materiality: the making of Buddhism in contemporary London

    This article aims to explore Buddhism’s often-overlooked presence on London’s urban landscape, showing how its quietness and subtlety of approach has allowed the faith to grow largely beneath the radar. It argues that Buddhism makes claims to urban space in much the same way as it produces its faith, being as much about the practices performed and the spaces where they are enacted as it is about faith or beliefs. The research across a number of Buddhist sites in London reveals that number of people declaring themselves as Buddhists has indeed risen in recent years, following the rise of other non-traditional religions in the UK; however, this research suggests that Buddhism differs from these in several ways. Drawing on Baumann’s (2002) distinction between traditionalist and modernist approaches to Buddhism, our research reveals a growth in each of these. Nevertheless, Buddhism remains largely invisible in the urban and suburban landscape of London, adapting buildings that are already in place, with little material impact on the built environment, and has thus been less subject to contestation than other religious movements and traditions. This research contributes to a growing literature which foregrounds the importance of religion in making contemporary urban and social worlds

    Massless Scalar QED with Non-minimal Chern Simons Coupling

    2+1 dimensional massless scalar QED with (ϕϕ)3(\phi^*\phi)^3 scalar self-coupling is modified by the addition of a non- minimal Chern-Simons term that couples the dual of the electromagnetic field strength to the covariant current of the complex scalar field. The theory is shown to be fully one- loop renormalizable. The one loop effective potential for the scalar field gives rise to spontaneous symmetry breaking which induces masses for both the scalar and vector fields.     Immune-derived PD-L1 gene expression defines a subgroup of stage II/III colorectal cancer patients with favorable prognosis that may be harmed by adjuvant chemotherapy

    Abstract A recent phase II study of patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma showed that mismatch repair gene status was predictive of clinical response to PD-1–targeting immune checkpoint blockade. Further examination revealed strong correlation between PD-L1 protein expression and microsatellite instability (MSI) in stage IV colorectal carcinoma, suggesting that the amount of PD-L1 protein expression could identify late-stage patients who might benefit from immunotherapy. To assess whether the clinical associations between PD-L1 gene expression and MSI identified in metastatic colorectal carcinoma are also present in stage II/III colorectal carcinoma, we used in silico analysis to elucidate the cell types expressing the PD-L1 gene. We found a statistically significant association of PD-L1 gene expression with MSI in early-stage colorectal carcinoma (P &amp;lt; 0.001) and show that, unlike in non–colorectal carcinoma tumors, PD-L1 is derived predominantly from the immune infiltrate. We demonstrate that PD-L1 gene expression has positive prognostic value in the adjuvant disease setting (PD-L1low vs. PD-L1high HR = 9.09; CI, 2.11–39.10). PD-L1 gene expression had predictive value, as patients with high PD-L1 expression appear to be harmed by standard-of-care treatment (HR = 4.95; CI, 1.10–22.35). Building on the promising results from the metastatic colorectal carcinoma PD-1–targeting trial, we provide compelling evidence that patients with PD-L1high/MSI/immunehigh stage II/III colorectal carcinoma should not receive standard chemotherapy.     Back to the future: routine morphological assessment of the tumour microenvironment is prognostic in stage II/III colon cancer in a large population-based study

    AimsBoth morphological and molecular approaches have highlighted the biological and prognostic importance of the tumour microenvironment in colorectal cancer (CRC). Despite this, microscopic assessment of tumour microenvironment has not been adopted into routine practice.Methods and ResultsBased on existing evidence, we selected specific morphological features relating to peritumoral inflammatory and stromal responses, agreed criteria for scoring, and assessed these in representative H&amp;E-stained whole tumour sections, from a population-based cohort of 445 stage II/III colon cancer cases. Moderate/severe peritumoral diffuse lymphoid inflammation and Crohn's disease-like reaction were associated with significantly reduced risks of CRC-specific death (adjusted HR 0.48, 95% CI 0.31-0.76, and HR 0.60, 95% CI 0.42-0.84, respectively). The presence of &gt;50% tumour stromal percentage, assessed by global evaluation of tumour area, was associated with a significantly increased risk of CRC-specific death (HR 1.60 95% CI 1.06-2.41). A composite, “fibroinflammatory score” (0-3), combining dichotomised scores of these three features, showed a highly significant association in relation to survival outcomes. Those with a score ≥2 had an almost 2.5 fold increased risk of CRC-specific death (HR 2.44, 95% CI: 1.56-3.81), compared with those scoring zero. These associations were stronger in MSI-high tumours, potentially identifying a subset of MSI-high colon cancers which lack characteristic morphological features and have an associated worse prognosis.ConclusionsIn summary, reporting on H&amp;E staining of selected microscopic features of the tumour microenvironment, independently or in combination, offers valuable prognostic information in stage II/III colon cancer and may allow morphological correlation with developing molecular classifications of prognostic and predictive relevance.</p

    Seasonal changes in a sandy beach fish assemblage at Canto Grande, Santa Catarina, South Brazil

As amostragens realizaramse em intervalos de 3 horas durante períodos de 24 h, numa base bimensal, entre Abril de 1996 e Fevereiro de 1997. Verificouse existir uma variação sazonal no número de espécies, densidade de peixes e biomassa, tendo os valores mais elevados ocorrido em Fevereiro (38 espécies, 257.6 peixes 1000 mˉ², 2286.4 g 1000 mˉ²). Recolheuse um total de 67 espécies, pertencentes a 56 géneros e a 33 famílias, sendo a comunidade dominada por sete espécies pertencentes a três famílias: Atherinella brasiliensis (Atherinidae); Brevoortia pectinata, Harengula clupeola e Sardinella brasiliensis (Clupeidae); Anchoviella lepidontostole, Cetengraulis edentulus e Lycengraulis grossidens (Engraulidae). Tanto a diversidade de espécies (H′) como a equitabilidade (J′) foram médias a elevadas ao longo do ano devido à baixa dominância. A maior mudança na estrutura da comunidade ocorreu entre os meses de Inverno (Julho e Agosto) e as outras estações. Nenhuma das espécies dominantes pode ser classificada como residente. Os principais predadores foram Pomatomus saltator (Inverno) e Trichiurus lepturus (Verão). A maior parte das espécies observadas foram ou peixes juvenis ou espécies pelágicas de pequeno tamanho e fortemente gregárias.ABSTRACT: A shallow-water fish assemblage, over a soft, sandy bottom, at Canto Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, was sampled with a beach seine. Sampling was undertaken at 3 h intervals over 24 h on a bimonthly basis between April 1996 and February 1997. There was a seasonal variation in the number of species, density of fishes and biomass with the highest values in February (38 species, 257.6 fish 1000 mˉ², 2286.4 g 1000 mˉ²). A total of 67 species, belonging to 56 genera and 33 families were collected and the assemblage was dominated by seven species belonging to three families: Atherinella brasiliensis (Atherinidae); Brevoortia pectinata, Harengula clupeola and Sardinella brasiliensis (Clupeidae); Anchoviella lepidontostole, Cetengraulis edentulus and Lycengraulis grossidens (Engraulidae). Species diversity (H′) and equitability (J′) were medium to high throughout the year due to the low dominance. The largest change in the assemblage structure occurred between winter months (July and August) and the other seasons. None of the dominant species can be classified as a resident. Main predators were Pomatomus saltator (winter) and Trichiurus lepturus (summer). Most of the species observed were either juvenile fish or small pelagic and strongly gregarious species

    Orbital-selective Mott transitions: Heavy fermions and beyond

    Quantum phase transitions in metals are often accompanied by violations of Fermi liquid behavior in the quantum critical regime. Particularly fascinating are transitions beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson concept of a local order parameter. The breakdown of the Kondo effect in heavy-fermion metals constitutes a prime example of such a transition. Here, the strongly correlated f electrons become localized and disappear from the Fermi surface, implying that the transition is equivalent to an orbital-selective Mott transition, as has been discussed for multi-band transition-metal oxides. In this article, available theoretical descriptions for orbital-selective Mott transitions will be reviewed, with an emphasis on conceptual aspects like the distinction between different low-temperature phases and the structure of the global phase diagram. Selected results for quantum critical properties will be listed as well. Finally, a brief overview is given on experiments which have been interpreted in terms of orbital-selective Mott physics.Comment: 29 pages, 4 figs, mini-review prepared for a special issue of JLT

    BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations in a population-based study of male breast cancer

    Background: The contribution of BRCA1 and BRCA2 to the incidence of male breast cancer (MBC) in the United Kingdom is not known, and the importance of these genes in the increased risk of female breast cancer associated with a family history of breast cancer in a male first-degree relative is unclear. Methods: We have carried out a population-based study of 94 MBC cases collected in the UK. We screened genomic DNA for mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 and used family history data from these cases to calculate the risk of breast cancer to female relatives of MBC cases. We also estimated the contribution of BRCA1 and BRCA2 to this risk. Results: Nineteen cases (20%) reported a first-degree relative with breast cancer, of whom seven also had an affected second-degree relative. The breast cancer risk in female first-degree relatives was 2.4 times (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.4–4.0) the risk in the general population. No BRCA1 mutation carriers were identified and five cases were found to carry a mutation in BRCA2. Allowing for a mutation detection sensitivity frequency of 70%, the carrier frequency for BRCA2 mutations was 8% (95% CI = 3–19). All the mutation carriers had a family history of breast, ovarian, prostate or pancreatic cancer. However, BRCA2 accounted for only 15% of the excess familial risk of breast cancer in female first-degree relatives. Conclusion: These data suggest that other genes that confer an increased risk for both female and male breast cancer have yet to be found

    Exploring older women's confidence during route planning

    In-car route guidance is automatic, requiring a minimum of time and thinking. This paper explores the use of personalised information when providing instructions for navigating a journey. We focus on older women with a lifetime of experience. Ten female participants were interviewed to elicit their comfort zone with respect to navigating in a car from their own home. Two routes were then devised for each participant, which extended beyond this comfort zone, and presented to them in two different formats. Participants then navigated the route of their least preferred format. Questionnaires and interviews were used to explore the effects of the formats on their confidence, cognitive effort and use of cognitive mapping facilities.
