    137Cs in the meat of wild boars: a comparison of the impacts of Chernobyl and Fukushima

    The impact of Chernobyl on the 137Cs activities found in wild boars in Europe, even in remote locations from the NPP, has been much greater than the impact of Fukushima on boars in Japan. Although there is great variability within the 137Cs concentrations throughout the wild boar populations, some boars in southern Germany in recent years exhibit higher activity concentrations (up to 10,000 Bq/kg and higher) than the highest 137Cs levels found in boars in the governmental food monitoring campaign (7900 Bq/kg) in Fukushima prefecture in Japan. The levels of radiocesium in boar appear to be more persistent than would be indicated by the constantly decreasing 137Cs inventory observed in the soil which points to a food source that is highly retentive to 137Cs contamination or to other radioecological anomalies that are not yet fully understood.CDC NIOSH Mountain and Plains Education and Research Center/T42OH009229-07NRC/NRC-HQ-12-G-38-004

    Large-scale mass distribution in the Illustris simulation

    Observations at low redshifts thus far fail to account for all of the baryons expected in the Universe according to cosmological constraints. A large fraction of the baryons presumably resides in a thin and warm-hot medium between the galaxies, where they are difficult to observe due to their low densities and high temperatures. Cosmological simulations of structure formation can be used to verify this picture and provide quantitative predictions for the distribution of mass in different large-scale structure components. Here we study the distribution of baryons and dark matter at different epochs using data from the Illustris simulation. We identify regions of different dark matter density with the primary constituents of large-scale structure, allowing us to measure mass and volume of haloes, filaments and voids. At redshift zero, we find that 49 % of the dark matter and 23 % of the baryons are within haloes more massive than the resolution limit of 2×1082\times 10^8 M_\odot. The filaments of the cosmic web host a further 45 % of the dark matter and 46 % of the baryons. The remaining 31 % of the baryons reside in voids. The majority of these baryons have been transported there through active galactic nuclei feedback. We note that the feedback model of Illustris is too strong for heavy haloes, therefore it is likely that we are overestimating this amount. Categorizing the baryons according to their density and temperature, we find that 17.8 % of them are in a condensed state, 21.6 % are present as cold, diffuse gas, and 53.9 % are found in the state of a warm-hot intergalactic medium.Comment: 12 pages, 15 figure

    Braveheart, a Long Noncoding RNA Required for Cardiovascular Lineage Commitment

    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are often expressed in a development-specific manner, yet little is known about their roles in lineage commitment. Here, we identified Braveheart (Bvht), a heart-associated lncRNA in mouse. Using multiple embryonic stem cell (ESC) differentiation strategies, we show that Bvht is required for progression of nascent mesoderm toward a cardiac fate. We find that Bvht is necessary for activation of a core cardiovascular gene network and functions upstream of mesoderm posterior 1 (MesP1), a master regulator of a common multipotent cardiovascular progenitor. We also show that Bvht interacts with SUZ12, a component of polycomb-repressive complex 2 (PRC2), during cardiomyocyte differentiation, suggesting that Bvht mediates epigenetic regulation of cardiac commitment. Finally, we demonstrate a role for Bvht in maintaining cardiac fate in neonatal cardiomyocytes.     Multiple disasters management: Lessons from the Fukushima triple events

    It has been five and a half years since the Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) in March 2011. This study summarize management and policy lessons from the GEJE. The recovery efforts that followed the triple disasters: the earthquake, tsunami and meltdown of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant are in progress. The experience of the GEJE and tsunami prompted the building of embankments throughout the Pacific coastal side of the Tohoku region. The Cabinet’s Reconstruction Headquarters used at least 19 trillion yen ($158 billion) for intensive reconstruction over five years through 2015. The local government of the affected area accelerated the decontamination of commercial land which is an important action for the recovery. The central government introduced the Electricity Business Act for implementing voluntary energy conservation measures for peak energy seasons. The GEJE has had an indirect effect on the health of the disaster victims via job uncertainty as well. Decontamination is crucial in bringing people and businesses back to the affected area and promoting sustainable economic recovery because it reduces uncertainty about the short and long-term health risks. An efficient health and occupation plan for the victims is essential for the integrated approach to multiple disaster management

    Treatment of the medical condition generally referred to as iron overload through the delivery of chelators has recently received a major boost. In 2005 Novartis gained FDA approval for the drug deferasirox, which may be taken orally. Until this time most patients with Fe overload have had to endure long periods of subcutaneous infusions of the orally ineffective drug desferrioxamine (desferal) which has led to major problems with patient compliance. An effective Fe chelator must possess a number of properties for it to be able to complex Fe in vivo and be excreted intact. This Perspective will provide an overview of the current state of chelators for Fe overload; both those currently approved and those undergoing preclinical development

    The effect of giving influenza vaccination to general practitioners: a controlled trial [NCT00221676]

    BACKGROUND: No efficacy studies of influenza vaccination given to GPs have yet been published. Therefore, our purpose was to assess the effect of an inactivated influenza vaccine given to GPs on the rate of clinical respiratory tract infections (RTIs) and proven influenza cases (influenza positive nose and throat swabs and a 4-fold titre rise), while adjusting for important covariates. METHODS: In a controlled trial during two consecutive winter periods (2002–2003 and 2003–2004) we compared (77 and 100) vaccinated with (45 and 40) unvaccinated GPs working in Flanders, Belgium. Influenza antibodies were measured immediately prior to and 3–5 weeks after vaccination, as well as after the influenza epidemic. During the influenza epidemic, GPs had to record their contact with influenza cases and their own RTI symptoms every day. If they became ill, the GPs had to take nose and throat swabs during the first 4 days. We performed a multivariate regression analysis for covariates using Generalized Estimating Equations. RESULTS: One half of the GPs (vaccinated or not) developed an RTI during the 2 influenza epidemics. During the two influenza periods, 8.6% of the vaccinated and 14.7% of the unvaccinated GPs had positive swabs for influenza (RR: 0.59; 95%CI: 0.28 – 1.24). Multivariate analysis revealed that influenza vaccination prevented RTIs and swab-positive influenza only among young GPs (ORadj: 0.35; 95%CI: 0.13 – 0.96 and 0.1; 0.01 – 0.75 respectively for 30-year-old GPs). Independent of vaccination, a low basic antibody titre against influenza (ORadj 0.57; 95%CI: 0.37 – 0.89) and the presence of influenza cases in the family (ORadj 9.24; 95%CI: 2.91 – 29) were highly predictive of an episode of swab-positive influenza. CONCLUSION: Influenza vaccination was shown to protect against proven influenza among young GPs. GPs, vaccinated or not, who are very vulnerable to influenza are those who have a low basic immunity against influenza and, in particular, those who have family members who develop influenza

    Effects of isolated, confined and extreme environments on parameters of the immune system - a systematic review

    BackgroundThe immune system is a crucial part of the body’s defense against infection and disease. However, individuals in antigen-limited environments face unique challenges that can weaken their immune systems. This systematic review aimed to investigate the impact of an exposure to an isolated, confined and extreme (ICE) environment with limited antigen diversity on human immune parameters.MethodsA systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library to identify relevant studies on immune system parameters in ICE environments. The studies were grouped by ICE type (space missions, microgravity simulations like bed rest studies, space simulation units like MARS500, and Antarctic research stations) to allow for clearer comparison and analysis of immune outcomes.ResultsAnalysis of 140 studies revealed considerable heterogeneity in study designs and outcomes, reflecting the complexity of immune responses across ICE environments. Nevertheless, immune dysregulation was consistently observed across environments. Space missions and Antarctic stations, in particular, showed pronounced immune changes, likely due to low antigen diversity and extreme conditions, with higher rates of infections and allergic responses suggesting increased vulnerability. Space simulation units exhibited immune changes similar to those in actual space missions, while gravity simulation studies, which focus on fluid shifts and bone loss, showed fewer immune alterations. Across environments, most immunological measures returned to baseline after isolation, indicating resilience and the potential for recovery upon re-exposure to diverse antigens.ConclusionReduced antigen diversity in ICE environments disrupts immune function, with effects often compounded by extreme conditions. Although immune resilience and recovery post-isolation are promising, the heterogeneity in current studies highlights the need for targeted research to identify specific immune vulnerabilities and to develop countermeasures. Such measures could reduce immune-related health risks for individuals in isolated settings, including astronauts, polar researchers, and vulnerable populations on Earth, such as the elderly or immunocompromised, thereby enhancing resilience in confined environments.Systematic Review Registrationhttps://www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/, identifier CRD42023476132
